The innermost coffin of the boy-king Tutankhamun is one of the most splendid and rare examples of royal burial regalia. Mad of solid gold and inlaid with precious colored glass and jewels, it was the most ornate of all the treasures unearthed in 1922 by Egyptologist Howard Carter and his patron Lord Carnarvon.
King Tutankhamun's mummy was placed inside three nested coffins, which in turn were lowered into a lare stone sarcophagus in his tomb. Tutankhamen became king when he was around nine years old, and died when he was around eighteen.
The two emblems held in the king's hands are symbols of kingship, showing his dominion over the lands of Upper and Lower Egypt. Tutankhamun's false beard was added as a sign of royal power. It is curved at the end to indicate that the young pharaoh has become a god in the afterlife.
This beautiful recreation of Tutankhamun's coffin was created by Swiss Rosicrucian artist Erwin Winterhalder. Mr. Winterhalder was a personal friend of H. Spencer Lewis, founder of Rosicrucian Park. Mr. Winterhalder created various artistic recreations of ancient Egyptian and Rosicrucian-inspired artwork for the park grounds at the request of H. Spencer Lewis.
Full page illustration found on page 25 of the first part of The Secret Symbols of The Rosicrucians. The number seven features in many cultures as a magical or mystical number, and here the Rosicrucians attempt to illustrate the truth behind it (in occult numerology, seven represents Truth or the Divine) Through numbers and letters the page claims to show the transformation of eternity to time, and the connection between God and man. It is easy to see how occultist fans of Victorian era would be engulfed in the complicated symbols; and how sceptics would be far from impressed. The Rosicrucians were associated with magic, which they differentiated from sorcery: "The former deals with the Real, the latter deals with Illusions. Magic is the culmination of all sciences, and includes them all; but there can be no true science without wisdom, and no wisdom without sanctification."
