San Salvador, El Salvador

Foundation stone 15 Oct 1905 by Fr Gabriel O’Farrell, architect Albert S. Conrad, opened 11 Feb 1906, windows by E F Troy. Previous services in Institute.

“At Minlaton the Catholics are few and far between. As a consequence the township does not yet boast of a Catholic Church. When Mass is celebrated, as it is at intervals during the year, recourse is had to the Institute, which is used instead. On the evening of arrival an address from the Archbishop, the Rosary, and a sermon from Father Kevin made up the programme. On the next evening the order was the same. On both Thursday and Friday morning there were three Masses, after the last of which on the Friday Confirmation was given.” [Southern Cross 6 Oct 1899]

“The ceremony of laying the foundation stone of the new Catholic Church of St. Malachy was performed at Minlaton on Sunday afternoon last by the Rev. Gabriel O'Farrell, O.P., North Adelaide, assisted by Rev. J. D. Murphy. . . . The contractor had made such rapid progress that the walls of the main building were up the full height of the eaves, and those of the porch about 3 ft. high. . . The nave is 46 ft. in length and 26 ft wide. . . A large arch is formed at the end, enclosed with temporary wall for the addition of a sanctuary at some future time. The Sacristy is 11 ft. square, buttressed, and designed with the object of forming a component part of the future sanctuary. The front gable is buttressed and corbeled, designed with dual decorated windows, the entrance porch being 9 ft. 6 in. x 8 ft., rising in gable form, surmounted with cross, and finished with triple window.” [Southern Cross 20 Oct 1905]

“The Catholics of Minlaton are very few — only 12 families all told — and it is only by great exertions and much self-sacrifice on the part of himself and the people that Father Murphy, has been able to get the work completed.” [Southern Cross 9 Feb 1906]

“the new church of St. Malachy, Minlaton, was solemnly blessed by the Very Rev. Father O'Farrell, O.P., of North Adelaide. It was a red-letter day for the few Catholics of Minlaton. Hitherto they had to content themselves with the use of the local institute. . . The new church, which is a beautiful structure, is well placed on the rising ground of a fine corner allotment at the eastern approach to the town. . . The edifice is designed in Gothic of the Early English period, modernised in conformity with local conditions, finished in ecclesiastic style reminiscent of an old village church, the walls being executed in local stone relieved with brick dressings and an effective treatment of deep rough casted frieze and battered plinth in the same material. . . The windows throughout have been artistically glazed by Mr. E. F. Troy in leaded lights, serving as memorials to the different members of the congregation who have generously contributed to their cost.” [Southern Cross 23 Feb 1906]

A tree full of rosary beads outside the chapel of Loretto in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The chapel is famous for its spiral staircase, said to be miraculous in its construction. Interesting as that is, there's plenty more to appreciate here.

All natural rosary. Authentic sea glass hand knotted on natural hemp and finished with an olive wood cross which was purchased from the Holy Land. Available in other colors. Special order only.

Nota 6: Enjoy!
