A Pronghorn (Antilocapra americana from Colfax County, New Mexico.
While prairie communities continue to decline across much of North America, there are still places in the west where vast remnants of short-grass prairie can be found. A favorite example lies in northeast New Mexico, where the western edge of the southwestern edge of the Great Plains remains relatively intact. That is not to say it is unaltered, as keystone species have been lost and invasive species have encroached. But one can get a brief glimpse of what it may have been like before the modern era.
Here a pronghorn buck forages in this expanse, where large tracts of public land are still fence free and provide these ancient prairie dwellers with room to roam.

We went out last night to meet with friends and enjoy some pre-Christmas fare. The lighting in this room caught my eye. Hope you are having a good weekend. Our usual daily temperature in December is around 16-18C but right now we have 28C!

Four Mallard ducks passing a Great blue heron near the Fish Hatchery in Forest Park, St. Louis. The afternoon sun was not on this portion of one of many lakes near the East end of Forest Park. The GBH didn't seem to mind later when one of the mallard males was searching for aquatic bits near its feet.
