My Grandmother's older sister, Aunt Rosemary, 1919-2001, sometime in 1938 when she would have been about 19.
I only remember meeting her once, when I would have been about 7 or 8 years old, but what I remember was much in line with the way others described her: a fun-loving unostentatious lady with something of a childlike disposition, who would launch into raucous laughter at the slightest provocation, and who sometimes seemed more at home with the children than with the adults. Though she was the oldest of my grandmother's siblings, by all accounts, she always had something of the child about her, & for that reason, it tended to be my grandmother, the second oldest, who the other children (all of whom lived in a sadistic Catholic boarding school) looked to for leadership & comfort.
A few years ago I met her daughter in Seattle, & though the last time we were together was when I was four years old, I instantly felt at home. She told me some hilarious stories about her mom's legendarily sub-par housekeeping skills: she considered the spiders on the ceiling to be her pets, and flicked so much cigarette ash about the house that when her daughter folded out the sofa during her visits home, she could feel and hear the crackling of years worth of ashes when she lay down. The irony is that my grandmother--her sister--was known far & wide for her obsessively spic-&-span housekeeping.
