Congrats to our third group of explorers on a 8 mile hike and 6 mile paddle to the outer limits of the park!

The implosion of RiverView Square to make way for the KFC YUM arena. This was my last frame because my buffer was full. I pressed the shutter when I heard the explosions begin. That started filling the buffer with photos before the building started to fall.

I like this for the balance and colours. I haven't eaten there myself, but would like to try it.

The Riverview theater, Built in 1949, remodeled in 1955. Its the same as it ever was exept better seats and sound and Digital Projectors. Was at a Midnight movie seeing the 1984 Ghostbusters.

I’ll be starting a series of spring day trips around Chengdu. The first of these is here to the ancient town of Huanglongxi (on Monday, March 7, 2016). Most sites I’ve seen say that the city is 1700 years old. Travel China Guide, however, says its history is “more than 1700 years” and immediately says “Huanglongxi can be dated back to the Western Han (206 BC – 24 AD).” Now, I may not be a genius, but if math serves correctly, 206 + 2016 is close to five centuries older than the 1700 that is advertised. (Travel China Guide also says Huanglongxi is 30 km from Chengdu; Wikipedia says 50 km/30 miles. My personal feeling is that Wikipedia is right, based on the fact that it took over an hour to get to it and only partially through congested city traffic.) So, I took a bus ride down to Shuangliu district southeast of town to spend a few hours wandering around and shooting.

It was a pretty cloudy day, which tampered the shooting a bit, but it was still an enjoyable four hours. I could have stayed longer, and thought a few times that this would be a good place to spend a night sometime, just to shoot in the evening.

I still may do that someday as it’s so accessible. The buses from Chengdu leave starting around seven in the morning (from Xinnanmen) and the last bus back to town is around six in the evening. Day trips are incredibly easy to do, and I think there are a few options for places to stay in the town, so that’s easy to do.

At the town, there are lots of lanes and alleys that turn every which way. There is also a main square (Longtan Square), some water wheels, and a few temples (Gulong Temple, Zhenjiang Temple, Chaoyin Temple) on the main street, along with wharves, two main gates (east and west), and countless shops and restaurants.

I’m glad to say that Huanglongxi is a very pleasant diversion from Chengdu and gives great variety to the options of things we have to do here.

If you have any questions or comments regarding any images you see, please feel free to leave them and I’ll try to answer as soon as I can.

A gateway back in time...

I went to the site of the Riverview amusement park in Des Moines and photographed the park as it is now. Then I overlayed photos from park taken in the 1940s-1970s. This is my first try at this kind of photo editing. I'm excited to do more around Des Moines!
