Bonding Ritual?

Even though I could not see a nest or chicks, I watched this pair of Black-necked Stilts very aggressively defending a small island at Bombay Hook NWR. If shorebirds landed close by one would fly off to chase them away, if a gull or Osprey got too close both would chase it away.

Besides this, on two or three occasions when there was no intruder, the pair flew up almost vertically close together, calling loudly then glided back to the island. I am speculating that this interesting behavior might perhaps be a bonding ritual.

PS Yesterday others spotted their chick on the island

The males are the first to arrive at the nesting grounds to claim their nesting territory. The courtship ritual consists of vocalizations and elaborate displays by the males, after which, mating pairs are formed.
