Belcourt was built in 1891, Oliver Belmont hired architect Richard Morris Hunt to design his dream home. The mansion would be a summer cottage for him and his horses. There are four horse statues at the entrance to the mansion.

Belmont’s bachelor pad was a private getaway, also it was a space to pamper his horses. Hunt also designed an enormous carriage room and stables. The mansion had a single bedroom in it, so he could live in privacy with his horses.

Beginning of Jan. prior to all the snow

Just another of this beautiful scene from a special day. In this earlier post I shared some photos of an old friend who passed away in November of last year: flic.kr/p/2rJoYJm

Father Mike Leckie was a catholic priest, a fireman, a lifelong railfan, a professional railroader latter in life, and a friend to all...and is dearly missed. A couple months after his passing the Old Colony and Newport Railway, where he had volunteered for decades, ran a private chartered trip as a memorial for his friends and family to share stories and camaraderie. The museum group borrowed Newport and Narragansett 65-tonner number 66 and former BC Rail Budd RDC BC-15, the latter of which was adorned with a special drum head for the occasion which was then donated to his surviving sisters after our trip. It was a fun trip full of smiles and memories and Mike sure would have liked it.

At our turnaround point we performed a photo runby and posed our little train in the backyards south of the Bristol Ferry Road crossing. This is about MP 10.8 on the state owned Newport Secondary which would have been MP 19.2 as measured from Myricks and the junction with the New Bedford mainline back in PC and early CR days.

Rising beyond is the Mount Hope Bridge. Opened in 1929, it is a two-lane suspension bridge spanning the Mount Hope Bay at one of the narrowest gaps in Narragansett Bay. The bridge connects the towns of Portsmouth and Bristol and is part of Route 114. Its towers are 285 feet tall, the length of the main span is 1,200 feet, and it offers 135 feet of clearance over high water with a total length of 6,130 feet.

This location is so named because prior to the opening of the bridge a ferry operated here having started all the way back in 1640 I the early colonial days. In the 19th century it had both rail and trolley connections and continued in service almost three centuries until finally becoming obsolete when this span opened to traffic. To learn more here's a neat blog: portsmouthhistorynotes.com/tag/bristol-ferry-area/

BC-15 is a Budd RDC-1 blt. Feb. 1957 as Canadian National D102 and later VIA 6102. It came to BC Rail in 1990 and served for a dozen years until being sold to the new Wilton Scenic Railroad in New Hampshire in 2002. They operated there for three seasons until the railroad's owner and founder unexpectedly passed away, and in 2006 these cars were sold to the Newport Dinner train and were transported to the isolated trackage here on Aquidneck Island.
