Rocket test - 2 seconds later. The Cosworth is at 18,000rpm, lots of thrust and the winds in the chamber begin to climb to 70mph, sucking dust (and some cameras) towards the e-flux tunnel.
RF43 was new in 1951 and had an interesting career, serving at least 17 of London Transport's country area garages. It spent its last days in revenue earning service with Continental Pioneer of Richmond eventually passing to Metrobus of Orpington who cannibalised it for spares for RF255. The bus is seen in happier days at St. Albans in 1988.
The start of the following day, our Epic - Ongar day, was boosted by the consumption of a freshly prepared 'Full English', after which LYF 399 is seen departing. It turned out to have been a wise move, as we weren't to know how that day was to unfold and particularly regarding the lack of further sustenance. Through no fault of the buses collected, we weren't to reach Stoke until 02.00 the following morning! Had plenty of time to mull over cheesy titles for these photos, such as 'Don't look back in Ongar' (!)

These were rescued for me from the Chiswick Experimental scrap bin in about 1969. They had been part of livery discussions prior to the RF production, but by then were just odd bits of aluminium (with a paper drawing stuck on and painted)! The Private Hire RFs, of course, ended up in a green and grey livery with red lettering and lining, not this green, cream and red version, which also has the flared window surround at the rear, much like the earlier T single-decks. I guess this is a rare survivor!
