I've made my long-overdue return to Flickr because I've been looking at this shot for days and can't work out how I feel about it. I think I like it, but want to know what other people think.
Oh - and I also wanted to pop in after all the stuff that's been happening over on Instagram and see whether anything's changed. It's actually reassuringly the same...
I have a version in landscape as well, but for some reason this one seems to have a much stronger feel to it - maybe because there's more dead space at the top and bottom to lead you into the shot.
Anyway, I'd love to know what people think - critique away...!

Unitrans maintenance staff rebuilt all six of its vintage AEC RT buses by hand, completely restoring the bodies and replacing the mechanicals with modern equipment. Here, RT #3123 is undergoing its restoration, which was completed around 1994.

The J.C. Davis is the last steam engine damaged in the 2003 Roundhouse roof collapse to be restored.
It is now on display at the B&O Railroad Museum.
trying my hand at digital restoration of an old Japanese woodblock print. My original print is from 1898, and suffers from bleeding of the blue ink as well as the more usual effects of old age (dirt, darkening). If anyone has any tips on this, I'd love to know.
From "Gikeiki", Benkei (辨慶) sneaks up on Ushiwakamaru (牛若丸, later known as Minamoto no Yoshitsune, 源義経) as he plays the flute on Gojo bridge. What I love about this print is the contrast of colors between the two men - Benkei boldly dressed with a strong skin tone and aggressive stance, contrasted with an ethereal Ushiwaka.
The obituary of the artist Chikanobu in the October 2 1912 issue (#8847) of the Miyako Shinbun, pg. 195:
"Yōshū Chikanobu, who represented in nishiki-e the Great Interior of the Chiyoda Castle and was famous as a master of bijin-ga, had retired to Shimo-Ōsaki at the foot of Goten-yama five years ago and led an elegant life away from the world, but suffered from stomach cancer starting this past June, and finally died on the night of September 28th at the age of seventy-five.
His real name being Hashimoto Naoyoshi, he was a retainer of the Sakakibara family of Takata domain in Echigo province. After the collapse of the Tokugawa Shogunate, he joined the Shōgitai and fought in the Battle of Ueno. Thereafter he fled to Hakodate, fought in the Battle of the Goryōkaku under the leadership of Enomoto Takeaki and Ōshima Keisuke, and achieved fame for his bravery. But following the Shōgitai’s surrender, he was handed over to the Takata domain. In the eighth year of Meiji, with the intention of making a living in the way that he was fond of, went to the capital and lived in Yushima-Tenjin town. He became an artist for the Kaishin Shinbun, and on the side, produced many nishikie pieces. Regarding his artistic background: when he was younger he studied the Kanō school of painting, but later switched to ukiyo-e and studied with a disciple of Keisai Eizen; and next joining the school of Ichiyūsai Kuniyoshi, called himself Yoshitsuru. After Kuniyoshi’s death, he studied with Kunisada. Later he studied nigao-e with Toyohara Kunichika, and called himself Isshunsai Chikanobu. He also referred to himself as Yōshū.
Among his disciples were Yōsai Nobukazu (楊斎 延一), Gyokuei (楊堂玉英)(Yōdō Gyokuei as a uchiwa-e painter), and several others. Gyokuei produced Kajita Hanko. Since only Nobukazu now is in good health, there is no one to succeed to Chikanobu’s bijin-ga, and thus Edo-e, after the death of Kunichika, has perished with Chikanobu. It is most regrettable."

A 'raw' scan of the ambrotype before I try some simple restoration. I'm not going to touch the front (emulsion) side, but simply want to remove the paper and re-black the reverse.
Photo was brought to me in pieces, cs 5 was used in the restoration process, elliptical marquee tool was used to rebuild right arm.

A photograph was taken using my 7D mark II hand held and imported into lightroom. After some basic changes the photo was imported into photoshop CC for final corrections.
