Engines # 3. If you zoom in on the engine, the black-grey canister looking device sitting in front of the cylinders on the upper side of the nose gear housing, is one of the engines two magnetos (the other is out of sight on the opposite side of the gear housing). While most ignition systems supply very high voltage (15,000 volts or more) through the ignition wires to the spark plugs, this can be a problem on aircraft operating at high altitudes. The lower atmospheric pressure allows current to escape the ignition wire insulation and arc to nearby metal components causing reduced energy to the sparkplugs and considerable radio interference. To solve this the Wright R-3350 (and other engines too) used a 24-volt ignition system. However, 24 volts is not sufficient to provide effective energy at the sparkplug. So, if you zoom in on engine # 3 you will see what looks like a small oval can with two electrical connections on the top of each cylinder head next to the left rocker cover. That is a capacitor that increases the magneto's 24 volts to the thousands of volts needed at the sparkplug. Of the two wire connections on the front of that capacitor one is the low voltage coming from the mag and the other is high voltage to the sparkplug. There is also a second high voltage wire coming out of the rear of the capacitor that goes to the cylinder's second sparkplug at the rear of the cylinder head.

Image of the Day 71/365 "Restoration" After a while, headlights start to fog and get hazey, UV damage and dirt, dull the light and make the headlights look terrible. Got around to buffing them out today and now they are looking like new!
