In my original 100strangers project, I tried a few profile shots just for something different. In this newest addition to my project, I thought I would try the profile shot over my shots of him facing me. With a bit of post processing, this was my preference for a number of reasons.
Although he was comfortable talking about his background and about being photographed, I thought there was a certain anonymity that I wanted to give him as I told his story. In the political climate of our country at this time, I feel I owe even more respect for people who have immigrated here looking for work and a better life compared to that of their country of origin. He is Haitian. Although we did not get into a discussion of the circumstances of his moving to the states, I sensed he was looking for a better life. Over the 12 years he has lived here, he has worked to improve his vocational status and continues to aim for higher goals. He said he enjoyed his position at the museum because he gets to talk to a lot of people and has never encountered any confrontation where he had to intervene, other than advising visitors not to touch the exhibits. He was dressed impeccably in a suit and tie and spoke with an ease with the language he has mastered here, although his accent was definitively foreign.
At the time I noticed him, he was "guarding" the entrance to an exhibit that was under construction. As I mentioned, he was not the focus of my original shot, but after I noticed him in the shot, I approached to ask if he was uncomfortable with being in the shot. After he said he was not, and we conversed for a few minutes, I asked if he was willing to participate in my project.
I had some difficulty with the exposure because I didn't want to approach to better meter his skin tone. The white wall distorted the light reading on my limited camera. I apologized when I showed his the shot for the exposure problem.
So I chose to accentuate rather than try to fix the exposure, and after giving it a high key appearance, I posterized it slightly. Your comments on my choices are welcomed since it is a different presentation than most of the stranger shots posted in this group.
He is the 182nd person I have approached to participate in this project. You can see more at 100 strangers. I have also added this to another group, an offshoot of the strangers project at The Human Family.

in the United States. He regularly coaches actors for auditions and
callbacks for feature films and episodic television. Gary's been
teaching classes for children and teens for over 20 years. Gary Spatz
has completed his third season as the acting coach for Dylan and Cole

coach for many television productions, including the Emmy award
winning CBS sitcom “Everybody Loves Raymond”, “Rosanne”, “Sister,
Sister”, “The Jeff Foxworthy Show”, and “The Smart Guy”
Gary Spatz's "The Playground" is located in the heart of the Century
City area of Los Angeles, adjacent to the Westfield Shopping Center.
The space has been designed to create a comfort zone for the actor
while simultaneously providing a professional atmosphere with studio-
grade lights, cameras and monitors.
Gary Spatz has been the acting coach on several Disney productions
including MMC (the New Mickey Mouse Club, where he also served as
creative consultant) and the feature film Honey I Shrunk the Kids. He
specializes in teaching young performers and has taught young actors
that have gone on to star in such productions as Felicity, Beverly
Hills 90210, Malcolm in the Middle, That 70s Show, Jurassic Park, and
many many more.

React, Respect, Intersect was created by two professional artists and a team of youth artists as part of the Groundswell Community Mural Project’s flagship Summer Leadership Institute (SLI). SLI teams spend seven weeks during working with artists and community-based organizations, learning job skills and creating public art throughout New York City. This mural depicts a utopian environment where vehicular traffic, pedestrians of all ages and abilities, bicyclists, skateboarders, and animals respectfully share the street. It focuses not only on traffic and pedestrian safety education, but also site-specific themes and cultural diversity.
The safety education focus of this mural was informed by workshops lead by NYCDOT Safety Education. The artists and youth artists researched safety issues near the mural site which influenced their final design. Speed of vehicular traffic, high levels of carbon dioxide in the air, and the need for all modes of transportation to respectfully share the streets are just a few of the themes beautifully integrated in to this mural.

East 5th Street in Kensington, Brooklyn
By respected architect Alexander Black, 1836; with later additions and alterations. 2-storey, 5-bay asymmetrical rectangular-plan former ecclesiastical building. Ashlar sandstone, polished at principal floor of principal elevation, broached at 1st floor. Base course, corniced frieze at ground floor; eaves course; cornice and blocking course. Predominantly blind openings to E and S elevations. 2-leaf timber door with decorative rectangular fanlight in penultimate bay at ground floor; windows in remaining bays at ground floor; architraved windows in bays at 1st floor. Pulpit by David Bryce, 1873 (unsure of survival).
Part of the Edinburgh New Town A Group. The former Glasite Meeting House was rescued by the Cockburn Conservation Trust, and latterly the Scottish Historic Buildings Trust. It is currently in use by the Ingleby Gallery.
Glasites were the followers of John Glas (1695-1773), who was removed from the Church of Scotland ministry in 1730 for his beliefs regarding the jurisdiction of the congregation. The first Glasite church was founded in Dundee. 33 Barony Street was built to replace the Glasites first Edinburgh church established in Chalmers Close in 1755. The Edinburgh Glasite congregation was the last to survive, until 1989, and 33 Barony Street was given to the Cockburn Conservation Trust in December of that year.
33 Barony Street adheres to the traditionally simple appearance of Glasite Meeting Houses. An early commission for Alexander Black, he most likely came about as architect as he was made surveyor to the Heriot Trust in 1836, and the land was bought by the Glasites from the Heriot Trust the same year.
Oh yes, we treat statues with great solemnity in Bonnie Scotland...or perhaps not. This is a statue of Scottish philospher David Hume, which sits outside the High Court on the Royal Mile. I'm sure one of the locals just thought he needed a hat during the recent good weather. :-)

[Six images make up this set) In Roanoke, Virginia. The old United Cigar Company building is a 2-story Art Deco structure (26 feet high), built in 1929 at what was then Roanoke’s busiest intersection—the corners of Campbell Avenue and Jefferson Street. The original building, commercial in intent, had a stone veneer but the ground floor has since been altered with a distinctive two-tone stucco application of green and white. On the Campbell Avenue side are a series of fixed low-set windows, a larger middle window flanked by two smaller ones, each set within its own small area and separated from each other by stylized wooden columns. Below each is a raised wooden panel. There is a clipped corner entrance where a pier functions as support for the upper level. Windows on the Jefferson Street side are large fixed commercial lights. The bottom portion of the building is called Corner Café and house a Thai Restaurant. I’m assuming offices occupy the second level, where the window bays are quite large with fixed lights. Separating these bays are stylized, grooved (fluted) Art Deco stone columns with volutes near the top of each and a floral pattern at the base. Below the windows is a line of stone with a wave pattern. Below the wavy design are rectangular shapes with a line of hexagonal shapes. Above these window bays are a line of sunburst images. In the cornice is another ornamental line, which is possibly a series of angled lines connected by an arch motif. The patterns are subtle in the stone yet are quite rich in design. A raised parapet is at the corner. This structure is part of the Roanoke Downtown Historic District, added to the National Register of Historic Places September 14, 2002 with ID#02000978.

“Titania and Bottom: A Scene from a Midsummer-Night’s Dream” is oil on canvas and dates from around the 1860s. The inspiration is William Shakespeare and the work depicts the transformation of Nick Bottom into a figure with the head of an ass; Puck, the mischievous fairy, is in the air above Bottom. Titania, Queen of the Fairies, is in white; she has also been affected, suddenly infatuated with this ridiculous figure. I don’t know the painting’s dimensions, but it is not a large work. It is on display at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, Virginia.
John Anster Fitzgerald, English artist, (circa 1823–1906) was a prominent Victorian era fairy painter and portrait artist. He was seemingly a self-taught painter. Many of his works are purely from the imagination rather than representations of literary themes. His works are often dark in subject matter with images of demons and ghouls, and it’s thought some may refer to opium use. “His paintings often use brilliant colors, especially reds, blues, and purples . . .” [Wikipedia article]. One of his works had a frame of twigs; the twigs in Titania and Bottom is a “variant reproduction” of that painting—Fairies Sleeping in a Bird's Nest. Some of Fitzgerald’s paintings have brought as much as £500,000. More information is in Wikipedia—

Does Detroit want your help? The short answer is, of course they do. The reality, as often is the case in Detroit, is a bit more complicated than short answers. The city clearly needs help but old politics and bitterness find a way to continually disrupt any meaningful effort to overhaul the city. And meaningful effort is the minimum the city requires. That is the bleak, underlying, issue behind the recent news surrounding the city finances. What is remarkable are the actions of citizens throughout the city taking matters into their own hands in the face of the circus downtown and in Lansing. While the political hacks and their cronies posture and preen for the cameras and their vested constituents, folks in the neighborhood are rebuilding, creating parks and community gardens. Turning barren, empty lots and burned out relics into useful spaces for their neighbors. The politicians won’t save the city, only the citizens can save the city. In the long run I bet they will.
I grew up just a few miles west of Brightmoor. As long as I can remember this area of the city had a tough reputation. My father was raised a few east of this area on the Westside and he tells me when he was a kid, back in the war years, Brightmoor was to be avoided. Recent years have been even less kind to this neighborhood, if you can imagine that. The population has dwindled from over 20,000 at the beginning of the decade, down to around 12,000 today. That is on the heels of another 20 years of steady population loss. It all adds up to vacancy- house, businesses, lots- you name it. Several community groups are fighting back and converting the open space into parks and gardens. This is being done with little help from the city. Frankly, it is likely being done in spite of the city, seeing how city officials hate folks taking action without their permission. It may be years or generations before this area of the city fills with houses and businesses again. In the meantime, this community is fighting the blight and trying to create a truly livable neighborhood. That, my friends, is the city’s best hope for a future.

I received a personal e-mail from my friend, Jean, who lives in Montana with Vic
and their wonderful family of animals. She said she was playing with my photos
again and wanted to show me what she'd done with another photo that I had

I thought it was wonderful. I am sure my brother, John...sister-in-law, Kelly and
baby Marcus, himself will love this too. Kelly's parents live in Florida and don't
get to see the baby much. They will LOVE this, Jean.

As part of our Stephen Lawrence Education Standard project, Year 8 students were recently involved in a 'Respect Week'.
Part of the week involved the students visiting a ‘Respect Fair' on June 16 2014, where they were able to consider the concept of respect; meeting and listening to a number of key speakers from organisations such as West Yorkshire Police, St. George’s Crypt, West Riding Country Football Association, CAFOD and Lessons from Auschwitz.
The students will work further on the project in their RE lessons, bringing their ideas together in a special Liturgy.

With all respect and sincerity I am curious to learn how many, if any, of my American or foreign born neighbors believe the late popular American urban story-TRUTH-teller Tupac Shakur's #T_H_U_G_L_I_F_E Child Abuse and Emotional Maltreatment *AWARENESS* concept offers a reasonable explanation for why significant numbers of American children are being impeded, hampered or prevented from maturing into reasonably responsible, well-adjusted American teens and adults who become doctors, scientists, engineers, business owners, educators and leaders?
Does Tupac offer a reasonably intelligent explanation for why Americans of African descent are being impeded from experiencing the equality and respect all peaceful, reasonably responsible Americans are entitled to enjoy?

...Tupac realized OUR NATION is being deprived of enjoying the potential achievements offered to ALL Americans by fairly or wonderfully happy kids maturing into reasonably responsible teens and adults caring about the future of OUR Nation, and the welfare of their peaceful, as well as less fortunate neighbors.
I believe Tupac correctly recognized Americans need to change the name of our “War On Poverty”, to “America’s Firm Resolve to End Childhood Abuse, Emotional Neglect and Maltreatment.”
Unlike Mr. Barack “My Brother’s Keeper” Obama and his presidential predecessors, I am hopeful our new president Renegade Republican Donald Trump will recognize improving the Quality of Life for our American neighbors of African descent begins with addressing HEALTH issues related to proper childhood care and environments.
I believe Mr. Trump should take meaningful ACTION to protect from harm our Nation's most precious and cherished assets by placing an emphasis on EDUCATION about proper child care, as well as stepping up enforcement of Child Safety & Protection laws which will eventually lead to fewer depressed, unhappy, emotionally neglected/abandoned American kids...
...maturing into angry, frustrated teens and young adults full or half full of rage and resentment for IRRESPONSIBLY and THROUGH NO FAULT OF THEIR OWN, being introduced to an emotionally and/or physically abusive childhood fraught with pain, struggles, torment, uncertainty, frustration, FEAR, demeaning government handouts, resentment, depression, sorrow, sadness, disappointment and hardships. :Childhood Trauma!:
Unfortunately, before he developed the confidence to properly promote his #T_H_U_G_L_I_F_E Child Abuse *AWARENESS* concept, Tupac was brutally murdered by OTHER emotionally or mentally ill victims of America's Culture of African American Child Abuse, Neglect and Emotional Maltreatment evolving from America's multi-generational, ignorant, once legal Culture of Racism.

Not only I am asking Mr. Trump to take meaningful ACTION protecting and preventing American kids from experiencing a potentially life-scarring, traumatic childhood...

My friends, during the 80s-90s I spent the first twelve years of my police career as a Brooklyn, NY cop, robbery and death investigator regularly witnessing significant numbers of newborns, infants, toddlers, children and teens, through no fault of their own experiencing a potentially life-scarring medical Disease/Condition known to medical doctors and researchers as "Childhood Trauma."
"Childhood Trauma" is a REAL Disease/Condition affecting far too many American kids and teens who far too often develop into emotionally damaged teens and adults lacking empathy, compassion and respect for their peaceful neighbors because they believe their lives suck so why shouldn't other people's lives suck too!!!
Much like Tupac I'm sorry to pick on moms, though since ancient times they are the primary caregivers we look to keep us SAFE, protected, cared for and loved right from our start.
In case there is any confusion, I am writing about and sharing credible evidence describing America’s potentially life scarring, oppressive, MUCH-IGNORED African American *PARENTAL CHILD CARE* HEALTH CRISIS that I, as well as a growing number of my responsible, caring, concerned American and foreign born neighbors believe is impeding our American neighbors of African descent from experiencing the equality and respect all peaceful, reasonably responsible Americans are entitled to enjoy.
