We had some time to kill so we stopped by this great little park that resides in Colorado Springs. It had been raining on and off for the better part of the day and after resolving ourself to a night in the car so we spent the rest of the day exploring. As well as an amazing geological spectacle, it has a fascinating history that spans back eons.

The human history of the Garden of the Gods commences many centuries before our present time. Stone hearths and fire rings found in the Garden dating over 3000 years ago indicate the presence of early inhabitants, According to Ute traditions, their people have always lived in this area, and were known to winter in the Garden of the Gods.

It's no wonder they were drawn to this magical place.

Thank you for taking the time to take a look at my photos and as always, your views, comments, faves, and support are greatly appreciated!! Have a great weekend everyone :)

Saw this magnificent grey wolf residing at the time I took this photo at the Alaskan Wildlife Conversation Center, in Alaska obvs. It's the closest I've been to a wolf in the wild and even from a distance they looked proud and intelligent and amazing.

I don't want to alarm you, but some people close to me say that once a month, on the full moon, I look a bit like this. (That's the Halloween scary bit for those in parts of the world that celebrate it ;)

Blue Jay

The blue jay is a passerine bird in the family Corvidae, native to eastern North America and California's state bird. It resides through most of the eastern and central United States, although eastern populations may be migratory. Wikipedia

The Columbian ground squirrel is a species of rodent common in certain regions of Canada and the northwestern United States. It is the second largest member of the genus Urocitellus, which includes marmots, chipmunks, prairie dogs and other holarctic ground squirrels. They are stout, with short dense fur, which is characteristically tawny across the bridge of the nose. Social encounters sometimes are initiated with kissing behavior and the most common activity above ground is standing at attention. Residing in mountainous terrain and high plains in northern latitudes, they hibernate for 8 to 9 months of the year in burrows, which may be used for many years. (Wikipedia)

The lawn around the park lodge was home to many of these charming rodents, who all watched us carefully before running when we approached too closely (say about 10m).

Inuksuit (the plural of Inuksuk) serve in a spiritual capacity to indicate a place where life is renewed or where spirits reside; where judgements or decisions are made or where celebrations and festivals are held. Traditionally, they were used by the Inuit in the north as directional markers. An Inukshuk in the shape of a person signifies safety, hope and friendship. These stone sculptures were also important for navigation, as a point of reference, as a marker for hunting grounds, or to denote a food cache.

~ We can observe the Black Tusk too here : The Black Tusk is a stratovolcano and a pinnacle of volcanic rock in Garibaldi Provincial Park of British Columbia, Canada. At 2,319 m above sea level, the upper spire is visible from a great distance in all directions.

In this large sea cave, a colony of Steller sea lions permanently resides and California sea lions also winter here. Waves from the open sea continually come splashing into the cave. The sea lions spend time here hauled out on rocks to rest and find shelter from winter storms. Many birds also inhabit the cave system.

An elevator has been built to take visitors down into the cave, where a single, carefully fenced-off viewpoint allows this incredible glimpse into another world! It is totally magical!

Between the crashing waves and the constant barking of the sea lions, the sound was deafening in this echoing cavern, and so whatever sound came from the human visitors was completely drowned out and became irrelevant. I was glad to come away with the impression that the wild sea lions really didn't seem bothered by the tourism activity.

The beauty of Colorado Provençal lies in the fact that the site was created both by nature and by men: the ocher trees.

In Rustrel, mining began at the end of the 19th century. The ocriers then tore open the earth to tear off the precious pigments declining a thousand colors and giving birth to landscapes with fantastic shapes.

Europe

The Eurasian eagle-owl (Bubo bubo) is a species of eagle-owl that resides in much of Eurasia. It is abbreviated to just the eagle-owl in Europe It is one of the largest species of owl, and females can grow to a total length of 75 cm (30 in), with a wingspan of 188 cm (6 ft 2 in), with males being slightly smaller. This bird has distinctive ear tufts. The orange eyes are distinctive.

Eurasian eagle-owls are found in many habitats, but are mostly birds of mountainous regions or other rocky areas, often those near varied woodland edge and shrubby areas with openings or wetlands to hunt a majority of their prey. Additionally, they inhabit coniferous forests, steppes, and other areas at varied elevations that are typically relatively remote.

The eagle-owl is mostly a nocturnal predator, hunting for a range of different prey species. Predominantly, their diet is composed of small mammals such as rodents and rabbits, but they also prey on larger mammals and birds of varying sizes. Other secondary prey can include reptiles, amphibians, fish, large insects and other assorted invertebrates.

In addition to being one of the largest living species of owl, the Eurasian eagle-owl is also one of the most widely distributed. With a total range in Europe and Asia of about 32 million km2 (12 million sq mi) and a total population estimated to be between 250,000 and 2.5 million.

A waterbird and a member of the rail and Crake family, this is a large bird around 40-45 cms long and weighing half a kilo or more. They are quite large compared to the other waterbirds here, but they are so impossible to sight in the green fields where they reside. They are easily identified by the frontal red shield and calls.

The birds stick to the foot long grass in the countryside and hence very hard to spot - any sighting in our region is considered rare. I had sighted this bird many times, but just could manage a distant poor shot.

But y'day early morning, on an open riverside road surrounded by grass and fields, several males were calling out and flying from one side of the road to the other. I was lucky to be able to get some shots of the bird much to my satisfaction. This one is a male, the female is more brownish in color.

Il faut parfois faire preuve d'imagination et ruser pour attirer ce grand timide d'oiseau qui réside souvent à couvert , pas de secret et c'est par le gosier qu'il faut le séduire . Sometimes you have to be imaginative and cunning to attract this shy, large bird who often resides in cover, no secret, and it is by the throat that it must be seduced. An old branch will do the trick, a cordless drill armed with a good wood drill bit and make some cavities to discreetly put the shelled hazelnuts or acorns, then hide and watch from afar if the canteen is successful and if the trap works, it's just a question of patience because sooner or later there will always be customers (Jay, Nuthatch, Chickadee, Woodpecker etc ...)

Poogy, resides in an abandoned pond near my house.

Don't know if Poogy is he/she or it but I think the name, I gave her, suits her nicely.

Sometimes, when I visit her, I'm thinking.......if I kiss Poogy, will she turn to a gorgeous princess with big.......eyes?

So we can fall in love, get married, have lots and lots of children and live happily ever after......Amen.

C'mon people, daydreaming is free, you know..........

The Painted Bunting (Passerina ciris) resides at Circle B Bar Reserve from about January until April each winter. This little guy was munching on the seeds that are visible in the picture. The bush had no leaves but foreground twigs can be seen in his wing area. He measures only about 5 1/4 inches from beak-tip to tail-tip. Definitely one of the prettier birds we come across.

Snowbowl resides on the San Francisco Peaks, a remnant of the former San Francisco Mountain, which are held as sacred to 13 different Native American tribes in the region. To date, they have lost all lawsuits they had filed to stop further development and expansion of this alpine ski resort.

We don't get fields of bluebells here like in the UK. We do have a few bluebells in our yard though. They reside in the corner where the light comes filtering in through a fence and trees. I saw this dandelion seedhead that kept coming in and out of the sunshine, and liked how close it was growing to the bluebell.

LET'S FACE THE MUSIC AND DANCE – DIANA KRALL

Time is a beautiful illusion

it cannot be quantified

as I sweep away last year's patterns

a residue resides

a little broken fading mosaic

veined with cracks and studded with tears

so small and fragile, I lift it up

and clasp it to my heartfelt fears

it's difficult to let the old ways go

it's hard to step into the new

but it's important to preserve sweet memories

and leave behind those that made me feel blue

Spring is a time for gentle renewal

moving on with life and regrowth

static is a negative charge of apathy

forward motion a positive oath

Softly I whisper my daily mantra

today is the first day of the rest of my life

and knowing this brings me succour and comfort

to my once ailing heart that was wrought with strife

ring out the bells; new change is here

there's a spring in my step; there's no room for fear

for today I begin an exciting new time

making new memories for this soft heart of mine

I put down the tiny fragment that represents broken dreams

cushioned in velvet; swaddled in reams

there it can't hurt me; I go forward; feel free

to walk in the sunlight; the shadows behind me.

Amalienborg (Danish pronunciation: [æˈmɛˀljn̩ˌpɒˀ]) is the home of the Danish royal family, and is located in Copenhagen, Denmark. It consists of four identical classical palace façades with rococo interiors around an octagonal courtyard (Danish: Amalienborg Slotsplads); in the centre of the square is a monumental equestrian statue of Amalienborg's founder, King Frederick V.

Amalienborg was originally built for four noble families; however, when Christiansborg Palace burned on 26 February 1794, the royal family bought the palaces and moved in. Over the years various monarchs and their families have resided in the four different palaces.

As I mentioned in the last post Bell Rock depicted here resides next to Courthouse Butte so this shot logically follows my last, speaking of logic have a gander at the people high up on this monument. While the grey day made for a great photos it also was on the verge of rain and these intrepid climbers seem oblivious to the fact that water makes for a bad climbing buddy. This 500+ foot climb is easy going up, so much so that people find themselves in predicaments on the way down they never intended while making the climb up.

I took this on Dec 23rd, 2019 with my D750 and Tamron 24-70 f2.8 G2 Lens at 35mm, 1/40s, f10 ISO 100 processed in LR, PS +Lumenzia ,and DXO Nik

Many of the pictures I take these days are captured in and around the Beartooth Mountains of south-central Montana, where I now reside. The prominent spire in this image is the namesake of those mountains…the Bear’s Tooth soars to an elevation of around 12,000 feet and can be seen from the Beartooth Highway between Red Lodge and Cooke City, Montana (deemed by Charles Kuralt to be “the most beautiful drive in the country"). The spire was originally named by the Native American Crow people as "Na Piet Say", roughly translated as bears tooth…

The red squirrel is a protected breed in most of Europe and there are fewer than 140,000 in the UK with 85% residing in Scotland. Being able to see them in the Lake District at Shap Wells felt incredibly special. Sometimes when visiting the Lake District the most surprising things happen when you are not moving.

These European Rollers are very rare visitors to the UK and mainly reside in Eastern Europe and are always a treat to see when one pops up locally as this one has in Suffolk this week :-)

This pair of Egyptian Geese reside in my local park and usually produce a good clutch of eggs/goslings each year.

I heard that they'd brought the newly hatched goslings over from the nesting site on an island in the middle of the lake, to the area where visitors walk. This is a risky move as people enter the park with their dogs at this point (some not on a lead) and the male swan (we only have one pair) is very protective and territorial when his mate is currently sitting on her nest.

Sadly there were initially ten yesterday, but only seven on my count this morning.

I went to the park early hoping to find them. When I arrived Mum was keeping them all warm. Then 2 dogs arrived across the water inlet where they were and this disturbed them. Thankfully another visitor was feeding them with seeds so I got some good photos.

On my way home from a meeting, the timing was ideal to capture a sunset. This is part of Davis Bay in the District of Sechelt where I live. I was traveling from Gibsons which is approximately 25 minutes away and knew that clouds were on the horizon.

Sometimes knowing where you live and the conditions present, can put you in a favourable position to catch what you are looking for. Enormous tree trunks that have wondered from log booms, dot the shoreline. At high tide, they dominate the shoreline and prove to frame this sunset image in a pleasing manner.

A PLACE WITH NO NAME

The beauty of the world lies not only in these grandiose places that amaze us all.

The most beautiful and touching manifestations are often revealed to us in these simple unpretentious natural harmonies, which are often found in places without a name, away from the busiest roads.

And it is there, far from the crowds and the incessant noise of the world, that we can hear and feel, in its simplest expression, the music of our origins.

While many species of dove live in Florida, the mourning dove (Zenaida macroura) is the only dove species native to the state.

Many dove species that reside in Florida, while not native, are state and federally protected, including the common ground dove (Zenaida passerina), Inca dove (Columbina inca), Key West quail-dove (Geotrygon chrysie), ruddy quail-dove (Geotrygon Montana), scaly-naped pigeon (Columba squamosa), white-winged dove (Zenaida asiatica), white-crowned pigeon (Columbina leucocephala) and Zenaida dove (Zenaida aurita). There are also other species of dove residing in Florida that are not protected and considered exotics in the United States; examples include the diamond dove (Geopelia cuneate), ringed turtle dove (Streptopelia risoria), rock dove or common pigeon (Columba livia), and Eurasian collared or ring-necked dove (Streptopelia decaocto).

Mourning doves can be found throughout southern Canada, all of the U.S. and Central America, and most of the Caribbean Islands. Found throughout Florida, the greatest numbers of mourning doves appear to be in the central portion of the state. Florida populations increase during the winter months, when the resident population is supplemented by birds migrating in from the north. During the past 40 years, dove populations have remained relatively stable in the eastern U.S., with a 1% increase during the last 10 years. In Florida, dove populations increased by 2% during the past 40 years, but decreased slightly (2%) during the last 10 years. Throughout the U.S., the number of dove hunters and birds harvested annually has been declining. Hunting, which typically takes 10-15% of the fall population, does not appear to be a significant problem for doves or an important factor in population declines. The primary reason for declines in many dove populations is the loss and degradation of breeding and foraging habitat.

I found this one along Joe Overstreet Road in Osceola County, Florida.
