-This and two other figurines of similar type were discovered in the so-called Temple Repositories at Knossos, which were votive burials (i.e. they were purposely buried in antiquity as religious act). -Like the bull, the snake was a sacred animal in Minoan religion as early as the Prepalatial period. Snakes appear to have been a prominent symbol in chthonic cults, and Arthur Evans, the excavator of the palace at Knossos, believed that they were the chthonic form of the Great Mother Goddess. Snakes have both associations with the dead and with eternal life (shedding their skins=rebirth). -This is possibly a borrowing from Egypt- snake goddess there known as Wadjyt. Sacred to her was the cobra that in the form of the uraeus became the distinctive emblem of Lower Egypt (Wadjyt's main cult site was in the Nile Delta). -As she does not appear on seals or in other contexts beyond the domestic realm, the "snake goddess" is usually considered to be a household divinity. -She appears to be almost drugged (perhaps participating in shamanistic activity?). -No male equivalent to these- from all surviving evidence, women played a key role in the practice of Minoan cult rituals. This is been interpreted by some scholars to mean that Minoan civilization was matriarchal in nature, rather than the clearly patriarchal society that we find on the Greek mainland in the Mycenaean world. -Note also the elaborate garments that female Minoans wore- the tight-fitted jacket that cinched in the waist and exposed the breasts, the long, heavy skirt with its patterned flounces, etc. Men, on the other hand, are often shown in much less restrictive clothing and in outdoor settings. There appears to be a relationship like that between a queen bee and her drones- men are valued for the work they do while women are valued for being the source of life and for tending the hearth.

Title: Ackermann's Repository of arts, literature, fashions &c
Author: Rudolph Ackermann
Publication: R. Ackermann, London
Publication Date: 1828
Book Description: Also called Ackermann’s Repository or simply Ackermann’s, this periodical was published monthly from 1809-1829 and was very popular in London and other urban areas of England. All the colored plates are excellent examples of the aquatint technique, a trend introduced into English illustration printing by Ackermann and popular for decades to come. The plates give fantastic illustration to the fashion of the Regency Period in England, in examples of dress, home décor, vehicle style and architectural elements. Ackermann's was monthly publication, later bound into 6 month volumes (there are 40 total volumes today). This book is a rebound publication of the plates from the periodical, arranged not by periodical but by subject matter. Dates on plates in this book range from 1818-1825. This is the frontspiece in the bound volume. It is an advertisement for Urling's Lace, complete with lace examples.

A mineral is a naturally-occurring, solid, inorganic, crystalline substance having a fairly definite chemical composition and having fairly definite physical properties. At its simplest, a mineral is a naturally-occurring solid chemical. Currently, there are over 6000 named and described minerals - about 200 of them are common and about 20 of them are very common. Mineral classification is based on anion chemistry. Major categories of minerals are: elements, sulfides, oxides, halides, carbonates, sulfates, phosphates, and silicates.
The silicates are the most abundant and chemically complex group of minerals. All silicates have silica as the basis for their chemistry. "Silica" refers to SiO2 chemistry. The fundamental molecular unit of silica is one small silicon atom surrounded by four large oxygen atoms in the shape of a triangular pyramid - this is the silica tetrahedron - SiO4. Each oxygen atom is shared by two silicon atoms, so only half of the four oxygens "belong" to each silicon. The resulting formula for silica is thus SiO2, not SiO4.
The simplest & most abundant silicate mineral in the Earth's crust is quartz (SiO2). All other silicates have silica + impurities. Many silicates have a significant percentage of aluminum (the aluminosilicates).
Quartz (silicon dioxide/silica - SiO2) is the most common mineral in the Earth's crust. It is composed of the two most abundant elements in the crust - oxygen and silicon. It has a glassy, nonmetallic luster, is commonly clearish to whitish to grayish in color, has a white streak, is quite hard (H≡7), forms hexagonal crystals, has no cleavage, and has conchoidal fracture. Quartz can be any color: clear, white, gray, black, brown, pink, red, purple, blue, green, orange, etc.
The pink coloration of rose quartz has been attributed to the presence of Ti+4 impurity or the presence of dumortierite-like fibers. Some rose quartz coloration has been attributed to radiation bombardment of quartz having Al and P impurities.
Locality: small pegmatite body near the Reedy Glacier, Wisconsin Range, Transantarctic Mountains, Antarctica

The National Museum of Nuclear Science & History (formerly named National Atomic Museum) is a national repository of nuclear science information chartered by the 102nd United States Congress under Public Law 102-190, and located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. "The mission of the National Atomic Museum is to serve as America's resource for nuclear history and science. The Museum presents exhibits and quality educational programs that convey the diversity of individuals and events that shape the historical and technical context of the nuclear age.

Anaglyph 3D is the name given to the stereoscopic 3D effect achieved by means of encoding each eye's image using filters of different (usually chromatically opposite) colors, typically red and cyan. Anaglyph 3D images contain two differently filtered colored images, one for each eye. When viewed through the "color-coded" "anaglyph glasses", each
of the two images reaches one eye, revealing an integrated stereoscopic image.
