Atlantic seaside resort town in Southern Maine. The town is home of Palace Playland, an amusement park that dates back to 1902 and occupies four acres of beachfront.

Attractions included "The Carousel," with hand-carved wooden horses from Germany, beautifully painted and gold-leaf accented. "The Jack and Jill“ consisted of a large bucket that hoisted two people to the top of a 50 foot slide and dumped them out. Dominating the park was “Noah’s Ark,” a huge ark-shaped funhouse that rocked back and forth while parents hung onto their little ones straining to run through the below-deck passages.

A fire in 1969, reportedly started by a penny that replaced a fuse, consumed the park.

I couldn't bring myself photograph the cookie-cutter attractions that now make up Palace Playland. Those childhood pictures of unique charm and character exist only in my mind.

Part of the wider Thamesmead Estate, built 1967-74 in a Brutalist style.

This part of the estate (low rise apartment buildings) is due to be demolished and replaced with newly built homes. Several of the other apartments near here are now unoccupied and have been boarded up.

The teal-coloured panel beyond the concrete staircase is part of a hoarding that surrounds a wide expanse of land where similar buildings have already been demolished in readiness for new construction work to begin.

Frederiksborg Castle (Danish: Frederiksborg Slot) is a palatial complex in Hillerød, Denmark. It was built as a royal residence for King Christian IV of Denmark-Norway in the early 17th century, replacing an older castle acquired by Frederick II and becoming the largest Renaissance residence in Scandinavia. Situated on three islets in the Slotssøen (castle lake), it is adjoined by a large formal garden in the Baroque style. (Wikipedia)

This is St Michael's Church at the tiny village of Haselbech in Northamptonshire. It is Grade II*-listed and parts of it date from the 13th and 14th centuries. The beautiful west tower dates from around 1500. I always find it remarkable how so many relatively small English villages have beautiful medieval churches. The villages were clearly very much bigger in medieval times, and in the case of Haselbech this is confirmed at:

BAL-05, with the CP 6241 and 6303 in their sharp Golden Beaver scheme leading, weave through some curves along the appropriately named Great River Road north of Guttenberg, IA on the west edge of the Mississippi River Valley. An old MILW line pole for some reason hangs on here, one of the few anywhere along this line to my knowledge. The ballast extra with it’s two set of GREX conveyor cars has been trying to weave through traffic southbound on the Marquette sub all day. Some minor signal issues at the siding at Eckards had delayed the train ahead (K50) and now this BAL-05 was running on restricting signals behind the slower freight most of the way to Dubuque it seemed. But that made for a nice chase for me! This sharp SD60 duo didn't last super long before one of them was replaced with a GP20ECo, unfortunately.

The CTC for this stretch around Eckards to Dubuque is relatively new. The CP has slowly been implementing CTC on the Marquette Sub from Sabula, IA to Bluff (La Crescent, MN), and has finally made it to Marquette with just a few "islands" of track warrant control "dark" territory left south of there. Given the increase in traffic on this line that is a key link in the CPKC’s Canada to Mexico route it certainly does seem warranted. Ballast trains are a common sight on the Marquette as they shuttle rock to expansion and heavy maintenance projects all throughout eastern Iowa from the pit at Waterloo, WI.

Newbury Bridge, crossing the River Kennet here at Newbury in West Berkshire, was completed in 1772 to replace earlier wooden structures dating from at least the 14th century. Despite appearances it has three arches, the two outer ones being incorporated in adjoining buildings. The Kennet & Avon Canal, mostly built in the very early 19th century, for 87 miles follows the River Avon before connecting to the River Kennet at Newbury, and then on to the River Thames at Reading. As this stone-built bridge pre-dated the canal, there was no provision for a towpath under the bridge. Thus, to haul barges a line had to be floated under the bridge and then re-attached to the horse where the towpath resumed.

Nylon strings are traditionally tied behind the bridge, but I've found that after years of use strings begin to saw through the wood where they are tied. I've found that using tiny blocks of wood to secure the wood avoids the issue.

note...rather than adding a new image to the banff set,I have replaced an older post with this new never before posted image

This image is of the Naples pier, an historic SW Florida landmark. Florida is a sunny place, but I chose to develop this as a monochrome to better reflect the water-light. For those interested, a history of the pier is presented below.

The history of the Naples Pier is as dynamic as the City on the Gulf. It has withstood six major hurricanes and recently underwent a major renovation. In 2015, the wood on the pier was replaced with Brazilian ipe, an impressive material that could last up to three decades. It’s also supposed to be cool to the touch, something beachgoers will undoubtedly appreciate. The pier also got bigger bathrooms and new sea turtle-friendly lights.

Before the Tamiami Trail (U.S. 41) was finished in 1928, the only way people could get to Naples was by boat via the Naples Pier. However, before the wooden pier was finished, there was a shell road from Fort Myers to Naples.

The city’s first post office was located at the end of the pier before it was destroyed by an accidental cigarette fire in 1912. The pier survived the fire—and hurricanes in 1910, 1926, 1935, 1944, 1960, and 2017. Throughout the years, the structure has proven to be as resilient as the people who frequent it.

The Naples Pier was officially completed in 1889 and helped transport guests to and from the Old Naples Hotel, which opened a year later. Other Naples homes, like Palm Cottage, sprang up around the pier as well. The original structure was a T-shaped, 600-foot wharf. Changing rooms, a bathhouse, and freight lifts were installed in 1909. A year later, a hurricane destroyed much of the pier. It was reconstructed to be 100 feet longer with two wings that formed a “V.”

Unfortunately, that wouldn’t be the first time the pier had to be rebuilt after a hurricane.

In 1926, another storm struck and damaged the pier yet again. There was another devastating hurricane in 1935, but it was the hurricane of 1944 that prompted the pier to be rebuilt to sturdier standards. The next version of the pier would be in 22 feet of water and 100 feet longer. This is when the pier started to become known as more of a fishing, dancing, and sunset viewing destination.

In 1960, the infamous Hurricane Donna hit Florida and caused the pier to be completely reconstructed. The pier collapsed under the weight of Category 4 water and winds. Fast forward 10 months later and it was standing again—still a major Naples landmark and community gathering place in the heart of the city.

The Naples Pier saw more major renovations in 2015 and had to be shut down two years later for repairs from Hurricane Irma. But no matter what, the pier isn’t going anywhere. It’s part of the heartbeat of Naples and that’s how it will stay.

www.familinparis.fr/street-art-butte-aux-cailles/

La Butte-aux-Cailles is today a mecca of street art. Its "village in the city" atmosphere, with its cobbled streets and walls conducive to artistic expression, has attracted many urban artists since the 1980s. Figures like Miss.Tic, Invader or Seth have left their mark on it, contributing to making it an iconic place.

La Butte aux Cailles takes its name from Pierre Caille, who acquired it in 1543. There were mills on the heights and tanneries, dyeing factories, laundries lower down, along the Bièvre. The neighborhood was once unsanitary but since then the Bièvre has been channeled and buried to become part of Paris.

The neighborhood also has a militant history inherited notably from the Paris Commune in 1871, during which the neighborhood was a stronghold of insurgents.

Associations like Lézarts de la Bièvre play an important role in protecting certain works, by signaling them to avoid their erasure. The works are often ephemeral and are replaced after a few weeks or months. Thanks to this dynamic, street art is partially tolerated, although it remains technically prohibited. This mix of history, creativity and tolerance also attracts tourists and enthusiasts, making the Butte-aux-Cailles a real open-air museum, in perpetual evolution

WINTER❄️

It tasted like more to go up at Le Prorel, Briançon with our ski pass without skiing to see the amazing views. Without knowing what I photographed I was surprised that this was a part of the Maginot Line so high up in the mountains🌞

I replaced the upload from a few minutes before with a panorama. After I looked back what I uploaded in 2013, I found out that this was a possible panorama of 2 photos. So I made it at once and now you can see the whole area with the wonderful mountains behind it, where it was snowing at that moment❄️

About the series

I was in Berlin for a few days and of course I wanted to shoot some Photos. My normal Camera was a little too big and unhandy for my business-trip and so I gave a Chance to my smartphone (Xiaomi Redmi Note 11) and a free B&W-App called “Hypocam”. I would like to share a few impressions, but it will not be a detailed test of the smartphone-camera or the software. For me it was more about the question: can my Smartphone compete with my normal Camera? And can I create a nice & appealing b&w-Series with this equipment?

I will try to answer it primarily by showing the final results and I want to add only a little Text to every Photo. I hope you like the photos and if you want to leave a comment: What experiences have you had so far? Can a smartphone compete with or even replace expensive equipment in some situations?

The church of Saint Peter was built to replace a previous church washed away in a significant flood in 1337

Sometimes referred to as "the Cathedral of the Fens", the largely Perpendicular church is Grade 1 listed, and is often regarded as one of England's finest parish churches.

The Fenlands of south-east Lincolnshire, west Norfolk and north Cambridgeshire are rich in medieval ecclesiastical architecture, because of this the area is sometimes referred to as the "Holy Land of the English".

For a short time, Amtrak’s California Zephyr saw 161 on rotation. This was Amtrak’s Phase I heritage unit and replaced the previous Phase I, 156, after it hit a truck and got severely damaged. Just like 156, 161 also has been retired as a few weeks ago it caught fire in Washington D.C. and was burnt to a crisp.

I walk on my own to think it over

I can't believe this is real

It all seems so clear

All seems so right

I can't put on words how I feel

In time you'll see

What you mean to me

Everyday I think of you

There's nothing here in the world

That can replace you, no

There's nothing here in the world

I can face without you, no

I'm lost in your eyes

You dream me away from here

Far away, where I can feel no pain

With you i feel safe

I know you keep me out of harms way

In time you'll see

What you mean to me

Everyday I think of you

There's nothing here in the world

That can replace you, no

There's nothing here in the world

I can face without you

Anytime you doubt with us

Makes you wanna run away

You think of what we have

If it feels like everything goes there away

I'll be standing here

There's nothing here in the world

That can replace you

There's nothing here in the world

That can replace you, no

there's nothing here in the world

I can face without you

Nothing in this world can replace you

There is nothing

There is nothing

There is nothing

The Cathedral of Saint Martin (Basilika Sankt Martin) is a magnificent Romanesque church located in the heart of Bonn, Germany. This historic monument, with its iconic twin towers, has stood the test of time, bearing witness to centuries of history and cultural change.

The current structure of the Bonner Münster, built in the Romanesque style, began to take shape around 1050. The new building replaced an earlier church and featured a three-aisled basilica with a double choir layout. The eastern choir, built over a three-aisled crypt, and the western choir, also with a crypt, are notable remnants of the 11th-century design.

The eastern choir, extended by Provost Gerhard von Are in the mid-12th century, features a richly decorated façade with seven closely spaced windows, a dwarf gallery, and shallow round-arched niches.

The Skeppsholmen Church (Swedish: Skeppsholmskyrkan) is a former church on the islet of Skeppsholmen in central Stockholm, Sweden.

Named after its location, the church was built 1823-1849 to replace a minor wooden church on Blasieholmen destroyed in the devastating fire of 1822. Inaugurated by King Charles XIV John on 24 July 1842 and still officially carrying his name,[2] it was designed by the architect Fredrik Blom as a neoclassical octahedral temple inspired by the Pantheon in Rome, borrowing the coffered ceiling while substituting the oculus for the temple-shaped lantern light. On all sides, the plain white walls restored in 1998 are pierced by portals whose four pillars support semi-circular lunettes. Inside the cruciform exterior, the interior sheet of the wooden double cupola is supported by paired doric columns and rounded arches. Accompanying the painted altarpiece are niches with statues of the apostles and two plaster groups.

The Skeppsholmen parish was discontinued in 1969 when the Navy moved to the Muskö naval base, and the church was secularized in 2002. Since May 2009, the building has been a concert hall called Eric Ericsonhallen. It was named after the Swedish conductor and choral conductor Eric Ericson (1918–2013).

I got out the old Rolleiflex MX (f3.5 Tessar, 1951) today and loaded it with Ilford Delta 100. I developed it in Adox FX-39. 1:19 for 14 minutes. That little Tessar is a very good performer. I ought to use the Rolleiflex more often.

Because this was really inexpensive (a friend sold it to me for $70 USD) I tend to neglect it, which is a mistake. It has its original focusing screen in it, and I ought to replace it, since it’s really dark and difficult to see in anything less than bright sunlight. Any tips on how to buy and install a better view screen?

Devious Mind - Asteria

No more gachas? I am hoping the "clever" people will come up with something to replace them. Along with quite a few others, I have had a grand passion for the gacha outfits that Chandra Meehan of Devious Mind has produced over these many years. She seemed to have a gacha machine at every event and I certainly contributed to them in a big way. I don't know if Asteria was her last one but it was fairly recent and it will feature in a dance of mine in the very near future as her costumes have done often in the past. This very charming outfit I'm wearing which is only commons, I did not score any rares, is called Asteria in Seaweed tone, far prettier than one would expect from that name. Here's to more Devious Mind costumes in whatever way she chooses to replace her gachas. The hairpiece is a Lode gacha item.

This sculpture is one of the most historically interesting sculptures on the bridge, which gradually gained its present appearance throughout many centuries. The original wooden crucifix was installed at this place soon after 1361 and probably destroyed by the Hussites in 1419. A new crucifix with a wooden corpus was erected in 1629 but was severely damaged by the Swedes towards the end of the Thirty Years' War. The remnants of this crucifix can be found in the lapidarium of the National Museum in Prague. This was replaced by another wooden Calvary which, in turn, was replaced with a metal version in 1657. Bought in Dresden, this crucifix was originally made in 1629 by H. Hillger based upon a design by W. E. Brohn. In 1666, two lead figures were added, but these were replaced in 1861 by the present sandstone statues by Emanuel Max, portraying the Virgin Mary and John the Evangelist.
