A coffeehouse, coffee shop or café (sometimes spelled cafe) is an establishment which primarily serves hot coffee, related coffee beverages (e.g., café latte, cappuccino, espresso), tea, and other hot beverages. Some coffeehouses also serve cold beverages such as iced coffee and iced tea. Many cafés also serve some type of food, such as light snacks, muffins or pastries. Coffeehouses range from owner-operated small businesses to large multinational corporations.

In continental Europe, cafés often serve alcoholic beverages and light food, but elsewhere the term "café" may also refer to a tea room, "greasy spoon" (a small and inexpensive restaurant, colloquially called a "caff"), transport café, or other casual eating and drinking place.

A coffeehouse may share some of the same characteristics of a bar or restaurant, but it is different from a cafeteria. Many coffeehouses in the Middle East and in West Asian immigrant districts in the Western world offer shisha (nargile in Greek and Turkish), flavored tobacco smoked through a hookah. Espresso bars are a type of coffeehouse that specializes in serving espresso and espresso-based drinks.

From a cultural standpoint, coffeehouses largely serve as centers of social interaction: the coffeehouse provides patrons with a place to congregate, talk, read, write, entertain one another, or pass the time, whether individually or in small groups. Since the development of Wi-Fi, coffeehouses with this capability have also become places for patrons to access the Internet on their laptops and tablet computers. A coffeehouse can serve as an informal club for its regular members.

As early as the 1950s Beatnik era and the 1960s folk music scene, coffeehouses have hosted singer-songwriter performances, typically in the evening.

This one also makes and sells various Pizzas in Paddington and is a cut above a coffee on the station concourse.

The black-crowned night heron (Nycticorax nycticorax), or black-capped night heron, commonly shortened to just night heron in Eurasia, is a medium-sized heron found throughout a large part of the world, except in the coldest regions and Australasia (where it is replaced by the closely related rufous night heron, with which it has hybridized in the area of contact).

Adults are approximately 64 cm (25 in) long and weigh 800 g (28 oz). They have a black crown and back with the remainder of the body white or grey, red eyes, and short yellow legs. They have pale grey wings and white under parts. Two or three long white plumes, erected in greeting and courtship displays, extend from the back of the head. The sexes are similar in appearance although the males are slightly larger. Black-crowned night herons do not fit the typical body form of the heron family. They are relatively stocky with shorter bills, legs, and necks than their more familiar cousins, the egrets and "day" herons. Their resting posture is normally somewhat hunched but when hunting they extend their necks and look more like other wading birds.

Immature birds have dull grey-brown plumage on their heads, wings, and backs, with numerous pale spots. Their underparts are paler and streaked with brown. The young birds have orange eyes and duller yellowish-green legs. They are very noisy birds in their nesting colonies, with calls that are commonly transcribed as quok or woc.

The breeding habitat is fresh and salt-water wetlands throughout much of the world. The subspecies N. n. hoactli breeds in North and South America from Canada as far south as northern Argentina and Chile, N. n. obscurus in southernmost South America, N. n. falklandicus in the Falkland Islands, and the nominate race N. n. nycticorax in Europe, Asia and Africa. Black-crowned night herons nest in colonies on platforms of sticks in a group of trees, or on the ground in protected locations such as islands or reedbeds. Three to eight eggs are laid.

This heron is migratory in the northernmost part of its range, but otherwise resident (even in the cold Patagonia). The North American population winters in Mexico, the southern United States, Central America, and the West Indies, and the Old World birds winter in tropical Africa and southern Asia.

These birds stand still at the water's edge and wait to ambush prey, mainly at night or early morning. They primarily eat small fish, crustaceans, frogs, aquatic insects, small mammals, and small birds. They are among the seven heron species observed to engage in bait fishing; luring or distracting fish by tossing edible or inedible buoyant objects into water within their striking range – a rare example of tool use among birds. During the day they rest in trees or bushes. N. n. hoactli is more gregarious outside the breeding season than the nominate race.

This family is very closely related to the other families in the suborder Sulae, i.e. the Phalacrocoracidae (cormorants and shags) and the Sulidae (gannets and boobies). Cormorants and anhingas are extremely similar as regards their body and leg skeletons and may be sister taxa. In fact, several anhinga fossils were initially believed to be cormorants or shags (see below). Some earlier authors included the darters in the Phalacrocoracidae as subfamily Anhinginae, but this is nowadays generally considered overlumping. However, as this agrees quite well with the fossil evidence some unite the Anhingidae and Phalacrocoracidae in a superfamily Phalacrocoracoidea.

The Sulae are also united by their characteristic display behavior, which agrees with the phylogeny as laid out by anatomical and DNA sequence data. While the darters' lack of many display behaviors is shared with gannets (and that of a few with cormorants), these are all symplesiomorphies that are absent in frigatebirds, tropicbirds and pelicans also. Like cormorants but unlike other birds, darters use their hyoid bone to stretch the gular sac in display. Whether the pointing display of mates is another synapomorphy of darters and cormorants that was dropped again in some of the latter, or whether it evolved independently in darters and those cormorants that do it, is not clear. The male raised-wing display seems to be a synapomorphy of the Sulae; like almost all cormorants and shags but unlike almost all gannets and boobies, darters keep their wrists bent as they lift the wings in display, but their alternating wing-waving, which they also show before take-off, is unique. That they often balance with their outstretched wings during walking is probably an autapomorphy of darters, necessitated by their being plumper than the other Sulae.

The Sulae were traditionally included in the Pelecaniformes, then a paraphyletic group of "higher waterbirds". The supposed traits uniting them, like all-webbed toes and a bare gular sac, are now known to be convergent, and pelicans are apparently closer relatives of storks than of the Sulae. Hence, the Sulae and the frigatebirds – and some prehistoric relatives – are increasingly separated as the Suliformes, which is sometimes dubbed "Phalacrocoraciformes.

The last of the Lego-related photos I took while home. A few Batman villains that weren't so far down the ladder... and one Superman foe.

I feel like Superman C-listers are on par with lousy gimmicks as Bat-Villains, yet here we are. Maybe the Prankster will stumble his way on here.

The Ten-Eyed Man: Saw Allo's use of the eyeball tile pieces and put them on a version from a Batman Rebirth issue called "Rooftops", an issue that sprung up an idea for a project that I may or may not further: Voldemort Torso

Allergent: What's his story you ask? Wanted to destroy all plant life, yadda yadda, escapes Ivy, caught by Lock-Up in his debut. Never seen again after that whole ordeal. Almost passes for a quick Heatwave: Old helmet I'll get back to labelling, Indiana Jones Russian head, and an old stormtrooper torso.

Cavalier: You notice there are quite a few villains that have the gimmick of believing they're from history or a story?: CMF Musketeer hat and sword, POTC Jack Sparrow head, and Avatar Sokka torso.

Signalman: I couldn't wait longer for me to order the MM Iron Man, but more so wanted to try out the cape idea on him, since this design's been done almost as much as the Cavalier:

Iron Fist Head, Bart Simpson torso, CMF Wizard Cape, and CMF Hula Girl Legs.

Great White Shark: The torso was pretty much the reason for him. Also him being a pretty decent closet C-lister: Voldemort head, Harry Potter (?) torso.

Funnyface: Well, he's here: CMF LM Bad Cop head, Eraser torso, and Trickster Legs.

A few of these were practice for a "Rooftops" project I had. However, I need to find an actual werewolf head... as well as a few other rogues.

Werewolf: There's no fig formula here but Batman just fights pretty much anything, including a werewolf that he's fine with it lurking around Gotham: CMF Werewolf fig.

At first glance this bird resembles a vulture but it is actually more closely related to ducks. It is a Southern Screamer (Chauna torquata) from South America, one of three extant species of Screamer that are an evolutionary oddity as they lack the small projections found on other birds' ribs (called uncinate processes). Game birds and ducks are closely related and Screamers (Anhimidae) are an early offshoot of this ancient evolutionary family. Their feet and beaks are very gamebird-like but apparently they are closer to ducks. You can also see a fearsome-looking spur sticking out from the front of each wing, that they use for fighting, and sometimes they snap off in other birds, but they grow back. They also have air-sacs beneath the skin which makes them unpleasant to eat (apparently). The generic name Chauna means spongy, referring to these air-sacs. Latham in 1785 wrote "When any part of the skin is touched by hand a crackling is felt" so I presume the air-sac skin must be rather like bubble-wrap, though I have never touched a Screamer. And the name Screamer, obviously comes from their call, which sounds rather goose-like: xeno-canto.org/494930

ENGLISH

Espresso or caffè espresso is a concentrated coffee beverage brewed by forcing very hot, but not boiling water under high pressure through coffee that has been ground to a consistency between extremely fine and powder.

Espresso was developed in Milan, Italy in the early 20th century, but up until the mid-1940s it was a beverage produced solely with steam pressure. The invention of the spring piston lever machine and its subsequent commercial success changed espresso into the beverage we know today. Espresso is now produced with between 8.2 and 18 atmospheres or bars (0.82 to 1.8 megapascals; 120 to 265 PSI) of pressure.

The defining characteristics of espresso include a thicker consistency than drip coffee, a higher amount of dissolved solids than drip coffee per relative volume, and a serving size that is usually measured in shots, which are between 25 and 30 ml (30ml=1 fluid ounce) in size. Espresso is chemically complex and volatile, with many of its chemical components quickly degrading from oxidation or loss of temperature. Properly brewed espresso has three major parts: the heart, body, and the most distinguishing factor, the presence of crema, a reddish-brown foam that floats on the surface of the espresso. It is composed of vegetable oils, proteins and sugars. Crema has elements of both emulsion and foam colloid.

As a result of the high-pressure brewing process, all of the flavors and chemicals in a typical cup of coffee are concentrated. Because of its intense and high concentration of ingredients (including caffeine), espresso lends itself to mixing into other coffee based drinks, such as lattes, cappuccini, macchiato and mochas, without being diluted in the resulting drink.

Fair trade is an organized social movement and market-based approach to alleviating global poverty and promoting sustainability. The movement advocates the payment of a fair price as well as social and environmental standards in areas related to the production of a wide variety of goods. It focuses in particular on exports from developing countries to developed countries, most notably handicrafts, coffee, cocoa, sugar, tea, bananas, honey, cotton, wine, fresh fruit, and so on.

Fair trade's strategic intent is to deliberately work with marginalised producers and workers in order to help them move from a position of vulnerability to security and economic self-sufficiency. It also aims at empowering them to become stakeholders in their own organizations and actively play a wider role in the global arena to achieve greater equity in international trade.

Aussitôt on l'entoure. Les questions pleuvent:

- Quand? - Comment? - Pourquoi?

In olden days, whereas in all regions of our country, the men were working and cleared, elves and fairies had taken refuge in a place they had rendered inaccessible. It was a high valley surrounded by a ring of mountains bristling with tangled forests. There, in a charming setting, a beautiful lake lapped, while on its banks, flourishing an eternal spring.

There grew the most delicate flowers, iridescent colors. The elves, all menus and graceful, fluttering from a corolla to another, accompanied by colorful butterflies. The fairies, the variegated robes, danced on the water in the evening moonlight, the sound of harmonious music and light. Flora lysis, the fairy queen, ruled this enchanted domain.

But one day that all this little world frolicked happily, a deer comes out of breath.

- Warning! The forests are open and men invade your kingdom! Immediately surrounding it. The questions rained:

- When? - How? - Why? - Men, thank you! It happens to their company! Queen Flora lysis will run well around the spells that will prevent their intrusion! However, she comes to talk at length with the doe, shaking his head gravely. No, no magic can act in this case: those who plan to come to the valley are monks. God protects them.

- In this case, note Prunet, the elf with purple wings, they will do us no harm! - No, certainly not the queen admits. But by breaking down some of the forests, they will open a passage to winds and winter penetrate behind. Then, gradually, other people will come and settle on our shores. what are we becoming? say elves sitting on the floor, ready to cry.

- Do not start whining, protesting and Blueberry Firefly, fairies living at the edge of the woods. If men are really too harsh for the little people we are, we will remove the lake bottom, that's all! What does our gracious sovereign?

- The first thing to do, decides Floralyse, standing proudly in his cute head crowned with golden flowers, is to send messengers who, unbeknownst to them, observe the men preparing to invade our valley. If they are less crude than we suppose, there might be able to communicate with them.

- And if they are clowns? Bindweed questioned the fragile elf blue crystalline voice.

- In this case, as stated Firefly and Bilberry, we must resign ourselves to disappear into the underground dwellings where we will create a palace to house rare flowers, insects too fragile birds and animals who wish to accompany us in our exile.

Without further delay, the little people begin its investigations. Bindweed and Prunet, the boldest among the elves, offer themselves as observers. One leaves the valley guided by a robin, the other goes in the opposite direction, with an experienced bee.

They reappeared the next day, exhausted from fatigue and amazed at what they saw and heard. Elves and fairies are listening, dismayed, as they present their reports to the queen Floralyse.

- Alas! Majesty announced Prunet, in my opinion, we can not live with men. They never understand us. They can neither see nor hear what nature provides them, and seek happiness I know not where, but notice all the joy they have at their disposal.

- I sang for them my sweetest melodies, laments bindweed, nobody has noticed.

- I danced in the moonlight and no one has noticed, indignant Prunet.

- How is it possible? murmur all present. Are you sure?

- I think, "said the queen Floralyse that these facts are sadly true. However, before making a decision, I will try some experiments and go in person to the scene. Whether you take my flying car!

Anxious, the small nation's sovereignty is further away, in a rose petal drawn by dragonflies. Fortunately, it does not take long to reappear.

- No, cried even before she landed, we did not mingle with such people. I hatched for them exquisite flowers and they were trampled. Quick, to work, leaving the surface of the earth!

When the men arrived at the valley which they named "Joux" because of its forests, the little people lived happily in an underground palace which we always see the holes. The rock which sometimes emerges in the lake is just the top of his tower.

Domi

An interesting grouping of Bristlecone Pine.

A march through time.

I'm not gonna lie: I've enjoyed taking the Flickr app off my phone and not feeling the pressure of trying to constantly keep up on my feed. But, I've quietly checked in at times on my laptop, favorited a few photos here and there, and then gone back to great times with the family amidst a busy season at work.

But, on the flipside, I always figured I'd post something again at some point. It was just a matter of feeling inspired to do so.

Well, that inspiration has come from two, whirlwind trips to Western New York. With me having a work-related meeting on Saturday, October 1st, followed by plans to spend the balance of the weekend doing a brief, overnight railroad photography trip with a couple old chase buddies, my wife wisely decided it was a good time to head up to Potsdam with our 4-year-old son to visit her parents for a long weekend.

With my wife and son planning to leave Thursday morning, I realized I had an unusual chance to make a quick, two-day trip before getting home in time to go to my work-related meeting on Saturday morning. A last-minute check with an old friend from seminary who lives in East Rochester, I confirmed I had a place to crash Thursday night.

So, after seeing my wife and son off on Thursday morning, I was headed west. The ultimate goal? The Falls Road out of Lockport, NY, which was a bucket list item I wanted to check. Unfortunately--thanks to CSX not dropping for them--all they did on Friday was spot cars in the yard with their RS-32 facing long-hood forward. Definitely a bummer.

What saved the trip, though, was cleaning up on the Finger Lakes Railway. I've done a little with the Finger Lakes before (including having the chance to ride a good portion of the railroad in a speeder on a NARCOA trip years ago), but I always wanted to do more. Well, this trip provided the chance.

While Friday the Finger Lakes was the backup plan, on Thursday it was the plan on the way out. I knew that Train GC-2 worked the Canandaigua line on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but I also knew it generally ran against the light with leaving Geneva westbound in the morning and returning eastbound in the afternoon. But, the line turns back south on its approach to Geneva, so I figured there'd be an angle or two.

I found the eastbound return train just east of the Village of Phelps, and boy was I happy to see what the power was: Lehigh Valley-inspired U23B #2201! After getting an OK shot at one crossing, I found this spot with perfect side light just after the Carter Road grade crossing in the Town of Phelps. After quietly walking back to the car, once inside I assure you there was some celebrating!

The Madagascar palm is not related to true palms. This spikey succulent shrub belongs to the dogbane family. Identifiable by its spear-like dark green foliage, the Madagascar palm has a single thick grey trunk, sometimes with thorns. The plant bears large, fragrant white flowers in the spring and into the early summer.

There are several things related to robins in the brambles, including a card, a coaster, and a winter scene art print..Robins are opportunistic nesters, choosing a spot low down in ivy, brambles and hedging - they have even been found making a home for themselves in wellington boots, coat pockets, watering cans and post boxes, and will happily make use of an open-fronted nest box.

Snow is just very lazy fog on a high carb diet. And steroids.

These tea time stickers are by one of my favourite Artists - Mary Engelbreit. You can see I've used some of these :-)

Flowin' freely through infinity

Free to be sure of

What I am and who I need not be

Free from all worries

Worries prey on oneself's troubled mind

Freer than the clock's hands

Tickin' way the times

Freer than the meaning of free that man defines

Life running through me

Till I feel my father God has called

Me having nothin'

But possessing riches more than all

And I'm free

To be nowhere

But in every place I need to be

Freer than a sunbeam

Shinning through my soul

Free from feelin' heat or knowing bitter cold

Free from conceiving the beginning

For that's the infinite start

I'm gone - gone but still living

Life goes on without a beating heart

Free like a vision

That the mind of only you can see

Freer than a raindrop

Falling from the sky

Freer than a smile in a baby's sleepin' eyes

I'm free like a river

Flowin' freely to infinity

I'm free to be sure of what

I am and who I need not be

I'm much freer - like the meaning of the word free that

crazy man defines

Free - free like the vision that

The mind of only you are ever gonna see

Free like the river my life

Goes on and on through infinity

After a morning of non-train related activites in Chicago in the afternoon we headed off for several hours of checking a few storied railroad locations I'd long known of but had never seen for myself. High on that list was the famed 'Racetrack' as it is colloquially known. Officially BNSF's Chicago Subdivision it is also Metra's busiest (in terms of total ridership) line featuring countless 'dinkys' along with Amtrak regional and long distance trains. This impressive stretch of railroad was historically the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad's entry into the railroad capital of the US.

Despite it being a weekend and Metra still operating a reduced covid schedule, I had no issue finding trains to shoot. And in the gap between the hourly commuter trains we found a couple fun little breweries in these charming western suburban towns including the fabulous Milk Money Brewing just a couple blocks down off to the right of where I shot this.

Here is Aurora bound train 2011 behind the standard EMD F40PHM-3 (METX 201 blt. Jun. 1992) wearing the current Metra scheme. They are crossing LaGrange Road at MP 13.73 after making a quick stop beside the tidy circa 1916 brick Suburban Station that also serves Amtrak's Illinois Zephyr and Carl Sandberg trains that operate to and from Quincy.

Swida anyone? Andrena platyparia is part of small closely related group of four Eastern North Americans (all with the first name of Andrena) that like to feed their babies pollen from the shrubby dogwoods. The fact that they specialize in pollen from shrubby dogwoods (this is the so called Swida group of dogwoods) and not the Dogwood that everyone fawns over (Cornus florida or the flowering dogwood (which, while not so great for bees does have the most amazingly sensual wood, it polishes to such slinky smoothness when sanded down with ultra fine grits that I use them as railings in my house and posts just so that I can touch them as I go by (this may seem slightly odd, but it is not, you just don't have access to dogwood wood, or you would do this too))). So, back to the main point, plantaxonomists have argued for year that the Swida group deserves its own genus and, as you can see, bees like A. platyparia vote the same way. If you plant some Swidas in your yard you are pretty much guaranteed to get one of the 4 Swiditarian Andrena in your yard too. Photo by Cole Cheng.

We Are Made One with What We Touch and See

We are resolved into the supreme air,

We are made one with what we touch and see,

With our heart's blood each crimson sun is fair,

With our young lives each spring impassioned tree

Flames into green, the wildest beasts that range

The moor our kinsmen are, all life is one, and all is change.

ODC - Busy

Plumeria is related to the Oleander, Nerium oleander, and both possess an irritant, rather similar to that of Euphorbia. Contact with the sap may irritate eyes and skin.[4] Each of the separate species of Plumeria bears differently shaped alternate leaves with distinct form and growth habits. The leaves of P. alba are quite narrow and corrugated, whereas leaves of P. pudica have an elongated shape and glossy, dark-green color. P. pudica is one of the everblooming types with non-deciduous, evergreen leaves. Another species that retains leaves and flowers in winter is P. obtusa; though its common name is "Singapore," it is originally from Colombia.[citation needed]

Plumeria flowers are most fragrant at night in order to lure sphinx moths to pollinate them. The flowers have no nectar, however, and simply dupe their pollinators. The moths inadvertently pollinate them by transferring pollen from flower to flower in their fruitless search for nectar.[citation needed]

Plumeria species may be propagated easily from cuttings of leafless stem tips in spring. Cuttings are allowed to dry at the base before planting in well-drained soil. Cuttings are particularly susceptible to rot in moist soil.

In order to get the most from a plumeria plant with respect to growth, size, blooms, and scent, there is a fine balance that must be maintained. Ideally, a plumeria is in its element when it can have plenty of sun and appropriate water, so as to maintain soil moistness just above a state of dryness. On the other hand, if the plant receives a lesser amount of sun, then a lesser amount of watering is necessary - again, to ensure that soil moistness stays just above the dry state. The more sun, the more water. The less sun, the less water. A common mistake of novice plumeria growers is to over-water the plant when it is not able to be exposed to enough sun, thereby resulting in a rotted root system. Conversely, if a plumeria plant is able to receive maximum exposure to the sun, but they aren't watered enough, the plant will die.[citation needed]

Propagation can also be by tissue culture from cuttings of freshly elongated stems or aseptically germinated seed. Pruning is best accomplished in the winter for deciduous varieties, or when cuttings a

Skuas are closely related to gulls but differ in their bill structure. In summer a lid develops from the base of the bill covering the nostrils. In fact, the old name Pomatorhine for Pomarine Skua translates from Greek as lidded nose, and that lid is visible here. This is a Brown Skua (Catharacta antarctica) of the subspecies lonnbergi which breeds on the Antarctic peninsula and the subantarctic islands. This one was nesting next to the path on Prion Island which is off the coast of South Georgia.

The skuas in the northern hemisphere (Great, Arctic, Long-tailed and Pomarine) all fiercely defend their nests, whereas the southern hemisphere species (Brown, South Polar and Chilean) seem indifferent to humans near their nests. The difference is probably down to the lack of ground predators in the Antarctic whereas in the Arctic there are things they need to defend their nests from, such as Arctic Foxes and Polar Bears. Brown Skuas are big birds too, and can weigh over 2kg with a wingspan over 1.5m, so I'm glad they don't attack like their northern cousins.

A small pool of heavy oil sits in a ~ 3 foot by 1 foot hole on the south side of CA 58 just west of McKittrick in Kern County, Califonia. This natural seep is one of the many that make up an area known as The McKittrick Tar Pits. In some areas, one of the first clues that oil is present in the subsurface is the fact that it sometimes finds its way to the surface through faulting or porous rock. Places where oil, asphalt or tar naturally comes to the surface are called an oil / tar seep or brea. Sands that are saturated with heavy asphalt or tar are called tar sands. The tar pits here lie on the western flank of the Temblor Range where alluvium covers Holocene alluvial gravels, fluvial sandstone, and lacustrine shales. These in turn overlie the kerogen-rich Miocene Monterey Formation. Most of the kerogen represent the preserved bodies of microscopic organism such as diatoms that live in the upper few meters of the ocean. The Monterey has many diatom rich beds called diatomaceous shales. Heat and time changed the soft body parts into liquid hydrocarbon and associated gas. About the same time, movement of the San Andres and associated faults help form the Temblor Range. Faulting and cracking of the rocks formed pathways for the oil to migrate up out of the Monterey, Some of the oil became trapped beneath an impermeable cap of Monterey Formation that slid of the Mountains. Most of the tar seeps occur in place where erosion has removed the Monterey cap (deposited by the landslide) and allowed the porous sandstone beds to be exposed and leak the oil.

As with its famous cousin, the La Brea Tar Pits, to the south, McKittrick's oil seeps also trapped its fair share of animals. Paleontologic studies of these seeps began in the early 1900's. Both the University of California and the Kern County Museum excavated the site in the 1940s. As of 1968, paleontologists identified over 43 different mammals and 58 different bird species. Bison, saber-toothed cat, dire wolf, camel and elephant, as well as smaller animals have been identified. Some of these species are now extinct. Most of the animal remains date back to the Pliestocene (10000 to 40000 years ago).

The Tulumne Yokut were the first people known to exploit the tar. Spanish explorers noted that they used it as a glue, a waterproofing agent, and related uses. It was so useful they found other tribes willing to trade for it. Early European settlers found similar uses, In the early 1860's the Buena Vista Petroleum Company began digging the tar at the seeps. In some cases Mining techniques were employed. A worker would be lowered down into the mine, then would fill buckets with the asphalt, while someone at the surface would pull it up. It was incredibly dirty and hot, As a result many miners chose to work naked and be washed at the end of the day. The Job had it dangers too, The workers not only had to contend with the tar in the pits, but also the hot weather of the San Joaquin Valley and noxious fumes from the oil, tar and gas. In the end, the mines were not very economical. The first oil well, The Standard Oil No. 1, was drilled in 1899. The well discovered oil and McKittrick Field was born. It became a major oil producer and is still producing today,

White-fronted Geese during the migration along the river IJssel in the Netherlands.

The Greater White-fronted Goose or Greater Whitefront (Anser albifrons) is a goose species closely related to the smaller Lesser White-fronted Goose (A. erythropus).

In Europe it has been known as simply White-fronted Goose.

In Northern and Central North America, it is colloquially called "Specklebelly" due to the salt-and-pepper appearance of the underside.

Greater Whitefronts are 65-78 cm in length and have a 130-165 cm wingspan.

They have bright orange legs, mouse-coloured upper wing-coverts and are smaller than Greylag Geese. As well as being larger than the Lesser White-fronted Goose.

The Greater White-fronted Goose is divided into five subspecies and breeds in the far north of Europe, Asia and North America. It overwinters a few one thousand kilometers to the south. The European subspecies of the picture here is the Anser albifrons albifrons.

The White-fronted Goose is the most abundant goose wintering primarily in major numbers in Western Europe in the Netherlands (Friesland, Zeeland, along the rivers Rhine and IJssel), in Germany ( Emsland and Niederrhein) and in Belgium (Flanders).

In minor numbers also in England. Its joyful and characteristic call fills the winter air along all main rivers and lakes in the Netherlands and Germany.

Sep. 20. This turned out to be another of those abstracts with a face in it that I didn't notice until days later. I'm surprised because the face-like pattern is so big I probably would have hidden it more if I'd seen the face while making the picture. (Maybe the title should be changed to something like, "Lady With a Funny Hat".)

For one day only, a BT related closure of Church Road at Aylmerton between 0930 - 1500hrs today, Thursday 27th October 2022, sees Sanders services 17 & 18 diverting in both directions by way of Metton and as a result they are unable to serve the village. As on the last occasion that Church Road was closed by Anglian Water in late July this year, term time only services 79 & 401 are not affected as the schools are on holiday.

So, with the sunny and unseasonably warm weather continuing, here we see Sanders North Walsham depot based former Wilts & Dorset Wright bodied Volvo B7RLE type number 508 - HF54 HGN as it turns onto School Road at the Aylmerton Cross junction while working the above Cromer bound journey on Thursday only service 17. Normally services 16/17/19/20 & 401 would pass this point on a left-right axis, whilst services 18 & 79 make the School Road/Church Road turn to the right of shot. As a result, although this location has featured amongst my uploads on numerous occasions and from almost every conceivable angle, this is the first time that a vehicle has been captured passing to the left of the cross as we look. Immediately behind 508, Mill Lane, an unmade track, runs through the trees to East Beckham. The bus is not only obscuring much of the cross, we can just see the top section poking above the roof, but also a “Diversion ENDS” sign.

█████ AUTISM

Autism is not a disease, it is a condition of life that affects to a greater or lesser extent the social interaction through communication, behavior, language and sensory integration of people, it is a different way of interpreting words, the colors, shapes and sounds of the world around us.

The causes are unknown, it is believed in the existence of a genetic factor associated with an environmental component. With personalized and specialized therapeutic treatment, those who manifest it manage to increase their quality of life.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate 1 case of autism for every 68 births in the United States.

According to the WHO, 1 in 160 children have this condition in the world and the incidence increases by 17% per year. Each year more children with autism are diagnosed than with AIDS, cancer and diabetes together.

People with autism do not live in "their world", they live in ours and that forces us to see it differently. Autism is part of a neurological and social diversity. It is a different way of processing information, of interacting with and in the world.

To give them an opportunity to fit in, is a moral obligation that we have as human beings.

There are some institutions that are responsible for generating support for family members and autists in different parts of the world. In Honduras, one of the poorest countries in the world, APOAUTIS exists.

Juuichimen Kannon

Sk: Ekadasamukha. Eleven-headed Kannon; a form of *Kannon 観音 with eleven miniature faces around the top of his head. One of the Six Kannon *Roku Kannon 六観音 and responsible for the human realm. In painting and sculpture, Juuichimen Kannon may be shown seated or standing, but standing images are more common, especially in sculpture. The deity usually is shown with two arms, although sometimes with four. When two armed, he usually carries a water jar with a lotus in his left hand which makes a mudra of the absence of fear *semui-in 施無畏印, and with his right hand makes the mudra of the granting of wishes *yogan-in 与願印. The number of faces is usually eleven, though this number may or may not include the main face of the image (thus making the total number eleven or twelve). A form with nine faces, Kumen Kannon 九面観音 also exists (ex. 8c *danzou 檀像 in Houryuuji 法隆寺). The placement of the heads varies. Bodhisattva heads bosatsumen 菩薩面 are situated in either one or two tiers with the head of a Buddha butsumen 仏面 at the top. The faces of the bodhisattvas usually include three benign faces jihimen 慈悲面, three angry faces shinnumen 瞋怒面, three plain faces with fangs kugejoushutsumen 狗牙上出面; also known as gejoushutsumen 牙上出面 and, at the back, a laughing face daishoumen 大笑面; also known as bouaku daishoumen 暴悪大笑面, daibakushoumen 大爆笑面. A small standing image of *Amida 阿弥陀, referred to as a *kebutsu 化仏, may be added in front of his crown as well.

There are different theories to account for the meaning of Juuichimen's multiple heads. On a folk level, there is a story that his head split into many because of his worry over sentient beings. On a higher level, he removes the eleven impediments of sentient beings. The positioning of the heads clearly indicates, that the elevated head of the Buddha rises above the others and iconography evokes the ten stages of the bodhisattva path, with the Buddha as the final result. The encapsulation of these processes into one image shows the presence of all within the bodhisattva, and suggests the fully enlightened bodhisattva as the ideal.

The origin of the iconography is unclear, but in India, multi-headed, multi-armed figures were used by the 7c to express the complex religious truths and practices of Buddhism. Although few examples are extant in India, a sculpted 7-8c image of Juuichimen Kannon with four arms in the cave #41 at Kanheri is well-known. In China, Juuichimen was commonly portrayed from the early Tang dynasty (early 7c), and the extant examples are found in paintings in Dunhuang 敦煌 (Jp: Tonkou caves #321 and #334) as well as in bronze and stone sculptures. In Japan, belief in the power of Juuichimen Kannon is recorded from the mid 7c, and the deity was propitiated especially for aid in convalescense from illnesses. Sculptural and painted images were common in the Nara period (8c) and became extremely popular in the Heian period (9-12c). There are numerous extant examples, many of fine quality, such as a painted image on the walls of the *Kondou 金堂 (late 7c) in Houryuuji 法隆寺, Nara (burnt down in 1949). Devotion centered upon the practice of group confessions before an image of the deity, the most famous of which was the shuni-e 修二会 ceremony of the *Nigatsudou 二月堂 in Toudaiji 東大寺, Nara (commonly known as omizutori お水取り), which began in 752 and continues to the present day. In Esoteric Buddhism mikkyou 密教, Juuichimen appears in the *Taizoukai mandara In Shinto art *Shintou bijutsu Juuichimen Kannon is a common choice as the *honjibutsu 本地仏 (Buddhist counterpart) of female Shinto deities *kami 神 and is one of the two most common choices as honjibutsu of the Sun Goddess Amaterasu Oomikami 天照大神 (the other being *Dainichi 大日). Juuichimen Kannon may be painted; 1) alone, as in the large Kamakura period (14c) painting held by Shidoji 志度寺 in Kagawa prefecture; 2) in his paradise *Fudaraku 補陀洛 (on a rock in the ocean) often accompained by Zenzai Douji 善財童子; or 3) in a setting like that of the large panel painting in Kaijuusenji 海住山寺, Kyoto, in which the deity descends from his paradise across the sea to welcome the deceased, *raigou 来迎, accompanied by the 25 bodhisattvas. In addition, the fame of distinct sculptural images of Juuichimen Kannon also lead their being the subject of paintings. One such example is the principal image of Hasedera 長谷寺 in Nara, which as a special feature holds a pewter staff *shakujou 錫杖 in its right hand and a lotus in a vase in its left. This very large image stands on a smooth, flat stone uncovered in a landslide, (instead of the lotus pedestal *rengeza 蓮華座, on which the deity first appeared). The story of the making of the image appears in the illustrated history of the temple *shaji engi-e
