Syrian refugee playing his pain melody on his toes like piano keys, and counting another day with every note, maybe someone will note.
Obviously these are asian, probably japanese refugees on a ship at the beginning of the 20th century.
The text on the reverse of this photograph raises some questions.
I am not so good in reading french, but I think it reads:
"Toute de Terre
ERZURUM
Sauvetage t/ de la Paix
??? ???? ?????
echoué (?) aux Indochinois"
Since Erzurum is a city in eastern Turkey, can it be the name of a ship? I cannot find any evidence.
Can someone read the the fourth line?
I think "echoué" doesn't make sense. Could it be another word?
The conflict between Georgia and Russia erupted in 2008 when Georgia launched an assault to retake South Ossetia, an enclave within Georgia controlled by pro-Russian separatists. It led to a massive counter-offensive, with Russia moving deeper into Georgia. Tens of thousands of people have been forced to flee Russian attacks. This building – a student residence during Soviet times – was used as a shelter in Tblisi, the Georgian capital. We have been moved by the recent scenes of migrants arriving in Europe. That’s why we have decided to bring together around twenty musicians who are refugees from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Tibet. We have assembled a group of virtuoso performers from different regions of the world who have put down roots in Belgium and who hope to make their voices heard through their music. Our objective is to reveal talents and cultural treasures that have become virtually invisible in Belgium. These are experienced musicians who have been trained at some of the most prestigious music academies in the Middle East (Damascus, Baghdad, Aleppo) and who have passed through a string of musical centres dotted along the former Silk road.
These talents form the basis of the project that we are launching with them. Together, we aim to develop a project that will help them to find their place and reconstruct their lives in Belgium. Their CD builds bridge between the musicians and the different traditions they represent, in order to produce an album that is rich, innovative and a mark of diversity and cultural exchange

Nothing ever changed.
In Germany there are many political uprisings containing the situation of refugees coming to europe especially to germany.
What happened in the last months in Germany was that people got threat by the idea of refugees living in their neighborhood. They demonstrated. The were afraid of criminal incidents and scared the wouldnt be safe anymore. On one hand I can understand their fear. On the other hand: honestly. These are victims of (mostly political) persecution. They left their homes, families and everyone the love to LIVE.
And what now? Full of hopes they come here and people demonstrate , burn their houses.
Are they really safe here now?
I cannot fathom what happend to them at all. I didnt have to leave my home.
But I feel ashamed.
PS: the newspaper you see in the picture is from 1956. I found it in one of my grandpas books this summer. I t also deals with the problems of refugees - not as sweeping as this discussion is today, but maybe that was good.
This is for the Refugees
The ones without a home..
From dawn to dusk from seed to shear
and to another eternal day they search for a place to rest
Let them sail across the sea..
Sailing through endless water just to be free
In search for a new asylum to subsist...
Nothing staged in this one.
As I walked the streets of Galata in Istanbul on a rainy day, I came across this young woman begging. I immediately saw how photogenic the scene looked. I didnt speak her language and she didnt speak mine. But I showed her my camera and some money and she nodded. She responded to direction and I managed to get 20 frames. I got 2 pics I'm happy with. I paid her for her time and went on my way. I believe she was a Syrian Refugee.

This photo was taken during the March Against Racism in central London on Saturday on 18 March. Many activists were furious at the new anti-immigration legislation which is clearly in breach of international law.
Although there are no legal routes available to refugees from many Asian and African countries suffering from conflict and murderous repressive regimes, the Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, is overseeing legislation which will criminalize refugees risking their lives at sea to reach relative safety. They will now have their asylum claims denied as inadmissible.
As marchers reached Downing Street, Braverman was thousands of miles away in Rwanda, reaffirming the UK's commitment to illegally expelling refugees to the impoverished country, which itself has a poor human rights record.
Apologies if some of the photographs in this series are clearly overexposed, which is due to my own stupidity and negligence as I forgot to reset the white balance after some indoor photography.
Be the light. Be the hope in the darkness.
Refugees are welcome.

Activists hold a 'Care4Calais' banner - Care4Calais (care4calais.org/) is a charity which organizes essential basics and legal support for refugees in Belgium, France and the UK as well as advocating for a fairer, safer and more welcoming approach to all refugees.
The activists were participating in a March Against Racism in central London, organised to mark UN Anti-Racism Day and came at a moment when ethnic minorities feel under severe assault on multiple fronts. Covid 19 and the recent surge in the cost of living have both had a disproportionate and devastating impact on black and other minority communities, while the Nationality and Borders Bill will criminalize asylum seekers and gives the government the power to strip the citizenship away from as many as six million people.
Meanwhile the Ukraine war is revealing Britain's double standards on refugees. Newspapers that were calling for the navy to be deployed to repel small boats of desperate victims of conflict and famine in Yemen, Syria and Afghanistan, are now declaring how we can be proud of our efforts to house those fleeing Ukraine. Some activists on Saturday's march carried placards reminding us that we should welcome refugees from ALL wars.
Although it is good to see Ukrainian refugees being housed in Britain, elementary morality would suggest that our responsibility to those fleeing Yemen and Afghanistan is even greater, as it is British and US aircraft and bombs that are targeting hospitals, markets and schools in Yemen, while Western sanctions are inflicting severe shortages of essentials and near famine conditions on millions in Afghanistan.

Portrait of rohingya refugees. Approximately 4,10,000 rohingya refugees crossed to Bangladesh from Myanmar after facing ethnic cleansing.
Kutupalong, Coxs Bazar.
By demanding honesty from others, I myself will be honest, he said. He asked , are you honest with me? Can I trust you?
He sat on a plastic chair. Behind him his comrades in the sea, his fellow travelers, all those who seek for an Ithaca: immigrants, refugees, outcasts. The salt of the sea has burnt their faces. But his badge on the side of his heart remains intact.
On the table papers in a language he cannot comprehend. All he could do was to trust those beside him that they were telling him the truth. His signature was based on trust. He tried to figure out what those letters which formed words which formed phrases meant. But, what can a blind man see?
The immigrant is a blind man. The only thing he sees is numbers. Thus, he counts the pages. 20 different papers he has to sign. And there are many others who wait. It will be a long procedure.
Are you honest with me? Because, to be honest with you, I cannot return back. There is a dream I have, you see. And I am not me. We are a band of brothers, who do not know the face of each other: unknown and unacknowledged yet connected.
We are from Syria, Libya, Morocco, India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Palestine, Ethiopia. We will be from Greece, Spain, Portugal: an army of blind, who seek to find a light so bright to make us see again.
One returns back, 1.000 come forward. For as long as we are blind we travel.
If we could see, we could not be immigrants. For we see no future in our countries. And thus, we can only see on our dreams. We dream of honesty and justice. In our dreams we see. We see Europe.
And thus, the salt burns our skin, we travel through the seas. A blind sailor guided by dreams. People profit from us. For we are blind. But the more you send us back, the more we shall arrive. For we have a high purpose that we have to succeed: To discover Vision. Not to be blind. To be free.
Be honest with me: can you see me? can I trust you with my dream? will you fool the blind?
