Syrian refugees landing on the beach at Molyvos, 15th July 2015.

These are mostly young families with small children, and the elderly. I shudder to think what they have been through - will have to go through.

Refugees occupy the street, waiting for local and international aid to arrive.

We think of him as safe beneath the steeple,

Or cosy in a crib beside the font,

But he is with a million displaced people

On the long road of weariness and want.

For even as we sing our final carol

His family is up and on that road,

Fleeing the wrath of someone else’s quarrel,

Glancing behind and shouldering their load.

Whilst Herod rages still from his dark tower

Christ clings to Mary, fingers tightly curled,

The lambs are slaughtered by the men of power,

And death squads spread their curse across the world.

But every Herod dies, and comes alone

To stand before the Lamb upon the throne.

Those fleeing conflict and atrocities in eastern Congo take refuge at a Baptist Church on the outskirts of the town Goma. The church has been turned into a refugee camp and offers assistance to those in need. Here they gather for a time of celebration.

Look into his eyes you will only find determination....

Somewhere, somehow, somebody must have kicked you around some

Tell me why you want to lay there, revel in your abandon

Honey, it don't make no difference to me, baby

Everybody's had to fight to be free, you see

You don't have to live like a refugee

The closing JCPenney store. This store is set to close around May 15th.

In 1968 the Eastland Mall opened with Sears, JCPenney, and Lazarus as anchor stores. Lazarus became Lazarus-Macy's in 2003 and Macy's in 2005. Also in 2005 a new prototype Kaufmann's store was built at Eastland. The following year Macy's left the former Lazarus building and moved into the briefly opened Kaufmann's store. JCPenney is set to close in mid-May 2015. The future of this mall is starting to get dicey in my opinion. Usually when a mall loses half or more of its anchor stores it will spiral downhill quickly and is often completely shuttered within a year or two. I hope that isn't the case with the Eastland Mall.

Afghan girl at a refugee/returnee camp on the outskirts of Farah City, Afghanistan.

Many Afghan families travel from Farah, Afghanistan into Iran to find work. Often times when these families return from Iran they find that their homes have either been destroyed or taken over by squatters.

Refugee/returnee camps have been set up around the province to address this issue and help families get back on their feet.

My work is a remix of Pussy Riot’s 2015 performance at Dismaland, which highlighted the injustices perpetrated by European borders, law enforcement, anti-immigration sentiments and policy, and apathetic citizens. All of these factors are at play in the North American context as refugees seek asylum in Canada by crossing the border on foot in the middle of winter.

I performed a series of actions in and around Emerson, Manitoba and the nearby Canada-US border, which were photographed on film as per my direction. The work has an element of performance, in that I interacted with the landscape and was influenced by my environment as I was photographed against the harsh conditions of the crossing.

My actions were influenced by Pussy Riot’s passion and dissent, and their aesthetics. I wanted to directly call on the state, passersby, and my audience to confront their own complacency as this crisis continues to unfold. I seek to draw attention to the inherent violence of international borders and the irony of their construction across stolen Indigenous lands. As a white, settler Canadian, I want to meaningfully interrogate my own ongoing complicity in colonization, and the complicity that is shared by all who settle in Canada.

The photographs demand that empty rhetoric and broken promises be followed up by action. This indeed requires increased resources and concentrated efforts but like Pussy Riot, I believe that it is our moral duty to act.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon visited the Kara Tepe refugee camp on the Greek island of Lesbos, where he met with refugees, as well as with local volunteers and authorities on 18 June, 2016. Mr. Ban's visit came just ahead of World Refugee Day on 20 June, and in the run-up to the UN General Assembly's High-Level Meeting to address the large movements of refugees and migrants, on 19 September.

Abschottung tötet! Für humanitäre Aufnahme!

5.000 people took to the streets, for the accommodation of refugees, against nationalism, racism and facism.

We call for nationwide protests against the murderous isolation of the European external border! The Greek military and Frontex fire tear gas, flashbangs and water cannons at the people seeking protection at the Turkish border; a small child drowned in front of Lesbos while the Greek coast guard was around. NGOs and activists are put under pressure and are prohibited from helping on Lesbos. While families, children and adolescents are being fought militarily at the border, reception facilities in Germany and other countries are empty.

Let us stand together to demand loudly that the people in Greek camps and at the Greek-Turkish border must be treated humanely and evacuated urgently. We say: We are able and we want to welcome these people and give them shelter. We want to give people a future and do not allow the fascist Salvinis, Orbans and Erdogans of this world to blackmail us.

Equal rights for all! Against the fortress Europe, Erdogan and the crisis of solidarity. We defend the fundamental right to apply for asylum and the freedom of movement! #WirHabenPlatz

We spent 2 days in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta which borders Morocco. In Ceuta i visited and photographed a group of Syrian Refugees who crossed into Ceuta illegally and hoped to then get across to mainland Europe. Many were detained by the Spanish authorities and put in a refugee camp. 55 of the refugees have now set up a protest camp in Plaza de los Reyes in protest at the poor conditions in the refugee camp. The authorities cannot send the refugees back to Morocco and will not allow them go across to mainland Spain so at the moment they are stuck in limbo in Ceuta

Some families from Kosovo crossed the border to Albania in 1998. Some of their husbands and sons remained in Kosovo to join Kosovo Liberation Army. This is a group from some families that tried to survived in Albania.

For several years, refugees received shelter in the form of tents. These are just provisional and not weather-resistant. With EU support, Première Urgence International (PUI) has built hardened shelters in Borgop and Ngam, to increase privacy, ensure safety, and protect against humidity and climate hazards. The design and construction of these shelters take into account local habits and available materials: Bantu, straw and bricks.

The boat here is a MOC, modeled on the MNOG boats. I went with orange because that was one of the only colors that both the large panels, and the Throwbot heads (used on the outriders) exist in (the others being blue - which would blend in a little too much with the Ga-Matoran - and black - which is already the color of the rest of the boat)
