I'm choosing to put this one up straight out-of-camera. I planned the hike for Wednesday morning, cleared the work off my desk, and the fog was so generous to show up and stay a while that day. What a great gift of a morning.

The Tower of Refuge is a stone-built castellated structure which was erected on St Mary's Isle (also known as the Conister Rock) in Douglas Bay, Isle of Man, in order to afford shelter to mariners wrecked on the rock. The tower was constructed through the endeavours of Sir William Hillary, who had been instrumental in several rescues of sailors stranded on the rock, and which culminated in the heroic rescue of the crew of the Saint George Steam Packet Company steamer RMS St George, when it foundered on the rock in the early hours of November 20, 1830. Sir William personally contributed a high proportion of the costs and secured a substantial number of public contributions for funding the structure. [Wikipedia]
A group of sandhill cranes free themselves from the bonds of gravity in the early morning light at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. The lumps in the foreground are pintail and Northern shoveler ducks dining on marsh delicacies.
A deserted hut near the Manorburn Dam. It was probably once a musterer's hut or raceman's hut and would have provided welcome shelter from the elements. Nowday's it is a refuge for animals and birds -we saw a rabbit disappear underneath it as we arrived and when we looked inside there was evidence of many birds.
Thanks especially to Jason/Audrey's Dad for your help with this one :-)

What a sight to wake up to. Arriving at Loch Chon this morning I had a wee chat with a lady and her young daughter who were just packing up after spending the night in their tent by the loch side. Without saying anything they put their dog on it's lead for a while as I took some photos as they didn't want it to splash about in the loch and ruin the stillness for my photos! Folk are nice eh?

Let this picture from last spring serve as a warning. Before you know it, it will be spring again. There will be more Canada geese!

Image 99 in this fun series of the capturing of the BULB capture. This capture is taken at the Blackwater National Wildlife Reuge showing the smoothed out clouds and water surface. The LCD screen is photoshopped in from the long exposure capture being taken at this time.
Ms. Krach and I are back from our trip to the eastern Maryland shore. On the way back we spent the night in Cambridge and visited the Refuge. I went back in the morning today before sunrise, and was able to get into the park after 6am. It was moody and cloudy. Had to take a couple really long exposures with all those clouds around :))
Here I am showing the capture withing the capture, the full frame long exposure taken with the horizon split at 50/50 on purpose. I did this as taking the capture for several minutes takes time ... and taking two captures takes even longer, so by splitting the composition I am able to get two frames in the wider landscape format each split 1/3 by 2/3 at the horizon. All of these are shown in this quadtych.
This series allows the viewer to see conditions as they were during the shot, and then the resulting long exposure effect on the water and clouds. It also shows how people moving about 'vanish' from the long exposure.

Another very friendly red-tailed haw about 25 minutes past sunset at the San Luis National Wildlife Refuge. Couldn't have been more than 15 feet away.

WISHING EVERYBODY HAPPY HAPPY 2009!!!
While at the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge on the eastern shore of Maryland, I met a retired National Park employee who worked on exhibits. He and his wife were there birding as well. We met up again near one of the osprey nests in the refuge area, watching the activity there from about 150 feet away.
We were discussing the nesting they do and how they obtain the sticks. I was telling him how last year near my home in Middle River where we have a lot of osprey I have seen them fly onto the tops of the leafless trees as spring begins and see them snap off branches from the trees. Then was mentioning watching one last year with a branch that was nearly 6 feet long and how the bird carried it from one end with it hanging down below.
Then ... not two minutes after telling him this story, the osprey left the nest and dropped down below the far off marsh and tall grass. A few moments after that here it came back towards the nest carrying a very large branch as well. How ironic ... here is one of the captures as it was heading back to the nest. Got a few really nice captures in the air, and then a bunch as it approached the nesting platform and then dropping it ever so carefully into place. It was amazing, as we both commented on how we wanted to see this bird get that large stick onto the platform.
After this timely story and happenstance occurred ... I thought it best not to make a joke about seeing a Tyrannosaurus Rex once come out the trees ;))
A California ground squirrel seems thankful. One of many impressions abundantly available daily at the San Luis National Wildlife Refuge.
at Refuge - a lush and enchanting rainforest sim, where nature’s beauty unfolds in every detail. Towering trees draped in vines create a canopy of mystery, while the soft mist weaves through the air, giving the scene an ethereal touch.
