Influenced by the rich cultural traditions of Los Angeles muralists, sign lettering, graffiti and calligraphy, artists Siner, Fishe and Dreye will be exhibiting works in a variety of mediums. In addition to the three featured artists work on display will be pieces from the SURVIVE campaign and original large-scale mural collaborations.

" REFRACTION balances the distinctively raw aesthetics, but complementary works of each artist. What emerges is a continuous visual identity that both provokes and subdues the senses. The result is unfiltered and illuminated."

Refraction is the fourth gallery in the Lumen series. This work resulted from an experimental investigation into the refraction of sunlight through glass using sunlight and photographic silver gelatin paper.

Many effects of light occurred simultaneously, but the most prominent was the refraction of light through the various glass objects. I sought to document and interpret purely formal qualities of light. Hidden lines and curves and other new ‘light objects’ were revealed by strong sunlight. Resulting images are left as negatives resembling X Rays, a symbolic gesture towards the interaction of science and art.

Light revealed the invisible.

Dewdrop refractions. Same spiderweb as the natural light shots but I managed to tape a picture of some flowers on a cane and placed it behind the web. Focus stacked using zerene

So, this past Sunday, I decided to get up early and wash the car. I'd had the car for a few weeks and hadn't had time to give it a bath...it showed. Anyways, I got started about 8:00 and spent a few hours on the task. Funny thing...as I was headed home I got stuck in a downpour...a downpour that seemed confined to a stretch of only a mile or so of freeway. It wasn't raining where I had been nor did it rain where I live. Figures. Well, as the storm (clouds) started to clear at sunset, I noticed the clouds partially blocking the sun and giving us those really cool spotlights of sun coming down from the sky. I shot that for a while and then all of a sudden this happened. I couldn't see the refraction until after the picture had been taken, but seeing it caused me to shoot a bit longer than I otherwise would have. As for the image, I realize it's not terribly special in that it's just a shot of the treeline from my balcony, but I like how it turned out. It's an attempt at a natural looking (I hope) blend of three exposures that I've cleaned up a bit after the fact. If I could ask for anything it would be that I hadn't cut off the top of the rainbow, a downside of using the 100mm.

This image is one of many explorations by Duncan Rawlinson into the expansive and intricate latent spaces of artificial intelligence. It captures a moment in a series of computational queries where AI algorithms construct a completely synthetic environment. Each interaction with the neural network builds a unique visual narrative that extends beyond traditional photography into realms of pure digital creation. Here, the landscape is entirely generated, showcasing the capacity of AI to create new forms of visual art from algorithmic data, reflecting the endless possibilities of digital artistic exploration.

I've been messing around a lot in 3D.

I got an idea to do the Refraction Cube from Portal 2 when I saw this image

I had an interesting experience with this because I was mainly working on my lighting. I still have a bit to learn as I couldn't get the shadows I was looking for. 2-point lighting in this.

Also, Ambient Occlusion makes all the difference. But you'll definitely have to play around with settings (minimum/maximum distances)

The design of this massive sculpture is based on observation of the structure of birds' wings, expanded to imposing scale. The wing's "feathers" are reflective panels used on solar cookers in Tibet, a region that has long struggled under Chinese rule. Like "With Wind," "Refraction" uses imagery of flight to evoke the tension between freedom—be it physical, political, or creative—and confinement.
