Reflecting Pool was taken at Beaver Lake in North Pole Alaska...on the way home from walk about in town ...was trying to catch some water fowl photos but they kept flying away ..did not have time to wait them out ....this part of lake is covered with fallen leaves just floating on top ..It snowed today and i managed to get a few shots of snow covered things ..I hate seeing the first snows but am happy when temps spiral down and everything is freeze dry .....

Having missed a couple of recent sunsets through a touch of apathy I took myself off this morning to capture a sunrise. In fairness to the BBC the forecast of great conditions had changed from yesterday evening by 0330 this morning, but I was already up so decided to press on regardless. Unfortunately the forecast was right; heavy cloud and drizzle greeted me at a variety of lochs on my way down to the Aviemore area. I spent the last 40 minutes or so prior to sun-up in my car along side Loch Morlich feeling a bit sorry for myself. I decided to try a new location, Ruthven Barracks, but made an unscheduled and unexpectedly rewarding stop at Loch Alvie on the way. The low sun was casting some lovely light onto Alvie church and the trees and hills around the loch. The water had stilled making for some great reflections and some now patchy cloud was drifting across the lower hill slopes.

As the year begins to wind down, I've begun reflecting on the year that was 2025. From CP 6259, to the OSR plow, to SD75IACCs becoming prevalent, to GP7s and the F units returning to service on OSR, to my first big trip out west (3100km in 7 days in Alberta & BC); it truely was one of the crazier years in recent memory. An image that I believe fits the topic at hand is this shot of CP 421 with CP 7036 leading. The crew from Toronto is nearly done their shift as they pass the North Sdg Swt Bala, the final siding before Mactier. The train is reflecting on the mostly calm Spiers Lake on a beautiful summer day. Thanks for reading my rambling. I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable holiday season this year.

There was a beautiful sunset last night, but, I was headed east so this is what I saw.

One building reflecting on to another. You can see the office lights from the one office buildings through the reflection of the other.

We started the day with an orange sunrise and ended with this stunning red sunset reflecting in the harbour.

Trees reflected in the Lake at Kew Gardens.

When I can get out with my camera again I want to try to perfect this kind of image. It depends heavily on the amount and position of the ripples, which aren't ideal in this shot. Unfortunately I only took the one casual shot of the reflection of these trees on this occasion - clearly I need to take far more to catch the ideal one.

With the processing, it's necessary to even up the considerable dynamic range between what is now the bottom of the image (originally the top) which was quite dark, and the top, which reflected the sky between the topmost branches of the trees, which was bright. The "soft contrast" slider in Nik Silver Efex is the crucial parameter for this but there are trade-offs between sufficiently brightening up the bottom of the image and losing details of the fine twigs at the top of the trees or having them too dark.
