The Castle of Lindoso is a medieval castle in the civil parish of Lindoso, municipality of Ponte da Barca, in the Portuguese district of Viana do Castelo. It is classified as a National Monument. It is believed the fortress was started under the 13th century reign of Afonso III of Portugal and was of low importance. During the time of the Restoration of Portuguese independence, the castle and its location gained importance in view of its border location. For this reason, the location was used as a support base in the context of Portuguese incursions in Galicia by the military forces of Portugal in September 1641. As the war progressed, the castle received modernization and restoration works, which were completed around 1666 (date inscribed on the lintel of a door). The castle saw a defensive state in the Napoleonic Wars but never saw action. It has never been used since.
For some reason a pelican looking out at the sun-dappled lake and deciding whether to take a swim or just sit & enjoy the breeze, seems very summery to me. I would choose both if I was a pelican. And maybe dine on some fresh seafood while there.
Summer is drawing to a close here officially at the end of the month, but I'm hoping we have many many summery days left yet. Friday is Australia Day and expected highs of 38C, definitely qualifies as summery :)

I dont normally leave messages like this but...
The world has been tipped upside down with Covid and some of us are trapped in situations beyond our control. Stress and Depression are serious issues and our mental health is often brushed aside without proper consideration of the impact it has on us further down the line.
It can be really hard to ask for help when your feeling low, but help is out there, and that hlep wants you to talk to them, they really do.
Those not feeling low, lets do our best to love and look out for one another, and if you can pass on a smile to a stranger it can make all the difference to their day. Smiles can be seen through masks, their in our eyes too, and a smile is more contagious than Covid... So I will make sure my next picture will be a happy one.

The reason for returning to the Lower Rio Grande Valley. Last year I only got a passing glance of this iconic skipper species. This year, lucky enough to see it and to photograph it on the very first day!
The cemetery gates, threshold between life and death, something on my mind after the terrorist atrocities of yesterday. We never know when Death will come for us, be ready my friends. For some it cannot come too soon, whether because of old age or long term illness, for others they have so much more life they want to live yet are snatched away too soon.
Governments have no answers to the infection of terror threats, there is a sense in which it is already too late, yet we must live in hope, we must offer people hope. Where does your hope lie?
This gate to the old cemetery on Southampton Common had been closed for years, something to do with discouraging unwanted after dark activities. I never did understand the logic when there are other gates such people can use, but for some reason it is now opened again and in this light even looks like an inviting path.

For reasons I will never know, this doe stood calmly and watched me as I happily snapped photos (trying to follow the rules, to not look at her directly and to keep my back to her as much as possible. She watched for about 5 minutes before she joined her family, who had already left as soon as I came along.
I shot this early in Spring this year. I think the Oystercatcher was defending his nesting territory. The Eagle was defending himself and trying to eat a fish just caught. Both were not happy

The reason I include this horse and fence combo in my Photostream is because of the signage on the fence. Licensed Shooting Preserve. A licensed shooting preserve is where they release different types of birds (not sure about other animals) and hunters come and shoot them, which I personally find rather despicable. But the point I am making here is, and what you can't see in the photo is that a few feet down the fence there is another sign that says, "don't touch, pet or feed the horses". And yet they are going to let hunters in those same fields that may or may not know how to shoot a gun. I just thought there was a lot of irony here......
The reason for the get-together on the fingerpost was a small cup containing nuts & seeds was fastened to the back of the post.
There are many reasons to go to the rural parts of Britain for a holiday, but beauty, peace and wonderful days out might be the most important.
I have far too many photos from our UK holiday in 2018, so I thought I would do what we all fear most of all, make a lovely collection of my holidaysnaps to show you.
But it was too many, so this is just a few glimpses to things we did in Lake District that I haven't alreaddy posted.
The main photo is from Eskdale. Eskdale is a glacial valley and civil parish in the western Lake District National Park, west of the Hardknott Pass. We are heading for the tiny village of Boot.

For some reason I find these barren industrial landscapes to be peaceful, in a way. I feel I am right where I am supposed to be, with no company but light, line, and color.
