Poésie sur volet roulant

Sale e scende

Come una campana

E poi s’involge e si svolge come

Le spire d’un serpente attorno al collo

E ritorna, come un treno in corsa

Si stende, di nuovo, come

Un pugile sfinito, curva su curva

Curva dopo curva, hai perso la via

Nelle viscere di un albero scuoiato

C’è quell’oro dentro al fango

Che lí è nato e lí ci resta

Ups and downs

Just like a bell tower

And then it gets involved and unfolds like

Snake spirals around his neck

And she's back like a racing train

Laying down again like

A worn out boxer, curve on curve

Turn after turn you lost your way

And you hit the ground

You step on that land and never look at it

In the eyes of beholder

On the legs of who stays

In the bowels of a tanned tree

There's that gold in the mud

Who was born there and will stay there

I took this shot in Furnas on Sao Miguel Island in the Azores. We were on a hike around this beautiful town and the nearby lake, fumaroles, and hot springs. Shortly before returning to Furnas we had this great view from a hill top. When the sun found a small hole in the clouds for a couple of seconds, due to the strong winds, the shadows of clouds were racing extremely fast over this plane and I was fast enough to take a couple of shots. I think I never saw light and shadow changing so quickly before. Indeed, rapidly changing weather is what the Azores are famous for. "What, you do not like the weather? Well, just wait 15 minutes..."

Jim strides up through the clouds to reach the summit of Monte Altissimo in the Apuane Alps of Italy.

The Western face of Monte Altissimo is a sheer wall of imposing rock that only the adventurous use to reach the summit. We took the far longer but more gradual hike up from the East which offers lovely views of the many marble quarries in this region of the Alps and views along the Western coastline of Italy all the way south to Tuscany.

We had planned on reaching the summit to watch the sunset and then make the return trip under the stars, but on the way up, clouds had formed around us and were rising as the sun set. What began was a race between us and the clouds to reach the summit first and so enjoy the sun shining above the cloud inversion.

I wanted to capture the essence of this race against nature, and so while scrambling up the slopes viaualised a photo of the clouds, the sun and one of us emerging upwards through the mist towards the summit. This, however, meant keeping ahead of Jim who is the strongest climber in our group.

Anyway, I managed to get to the top first and quickly frame this shot of Jim just seconds behind me. he clouds just retreated away in time to allow Jim to cast shadows through them to enhance the effect.

Don't let the image fool you, this photo was taken angled downwards and the slope is a lot more steep than it looks through this wideangle lens!

Unfortunately, while we couldn't climb any higher, the clouds did, and our walk back was under dark clouds and not the stars...

There wasn't just the pow wow, there was a rodeo too, with among others barrel racing for women. Women raced their horses around pre-set barrels in a cloverleaf pattern.

Racing is not a sport, its a lifestyle...!

Bright orange and noisy ... easily describes a bajaj. These traditional transportation vehicles became popular in India where they were developed with Vespa and later imported to and built in Indonesia. Similar vehicles are known as rickshaw in Africa, Tuk-Tuk in Thailand and MotoTaxi in Peru. With an estimated 20,000 bajaj in Jakarta, it is evident they are very popular here too!

Bajaj seat two passengers comfortably and up to five passengers - depending on the size of the passenger of course. Their areas of operation are limited to one mayoralty in the city. On the side of the driver's doors you'll see a big circle in which the area is designated ... Jakarta Barat, Jakarta Pusat, etc., with a different color for each mayoralty. The drivers are not allowed to go out of their area and aren't allowed onto many main roads, so routes may be a bit circuitous.

Fare determination is by bargaining. It's always best to ask an Indonesian what they would pay for a trip to a particular destination from your point of departure, and then bargain and pay accordingly.

A ride in a bajaj is hot, utilizing AC alam - or nature's air conditioning. The ride will also be noisy, smelly (car and bus fumes), bumpy, harrowing, and a grand adventure. My favorite maneuver is when the bajajdriver decides to flip a u-turn in the middle of the road.

There is some protection from the rain, unless it's blowing hard. You'd think you'd have to be careful about robbery since the vehicle is so open - but it's not as common as robberies in buses. Having said all that ... bajaj are extremely convenient in many areas of Jakarta for a short drive.

In this video I have put together the images from Josh Foley's Longford Motor Racing Mural with a description of the historic street circuit in 1963. The cars raced around this track from 1953-1968, in conditions unimaginable today.

As you'll see in this historic footage there were minimal safety barriers, the drivers wore helmets no bigger than bicycle helmets, and some chose not to wear safety harnesses in the belief that it would enable a quicker getaway in case of fire.

Two drivers were killed in practice at Longford over the years, including a young rising star of the Grand Prix circuit, American Timothy Mayer. Neil Kearney was there as a schoolboy when it all happened, and here he recounts his harrowing tale: neilkearney.net.au/that-fateful-friday-afternoon-at-longf...

New Zealand driver Bruce McLaren (a Formula 1 team bears his name today) wrote an epitaph for Mayer that sadly fitted his own death at Goodwood, England in 1970:

"The news that he died instantly was a terrible shock to all of us. But who is to say that he had not seen more, done more and learned more in his 26 years than many people do in a lifetime? It is tragic, particularly for those left. Plans half-made must now be forgotten and the hopes must be rekindled. Without men like Tim, plans and hopes mean nothing. To do something well is so worthwhile that to die trying to do it better cannot be foolhardy. I can’t say these things well, but I know this is what I feel to be true. It would be a waste of life to do nothing with one’s ability. Life is measured in terms of achievement, not in years alone."

On this video we are guided around the track by Australian driver Lex Davison. Two years later at Sandown in Melbourne, Davison was killed in another practice run at just 42 years of age. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lex_Davison

This was an era of heroic men in still relatively primitive motor sport conditions. Some would have called them foolhardy, others courageous. Either way, they fit the perfect Greek description of a hero.

It is a wonderful thing that artist Josh Foley has been able to remind us of this moment in time.
