This product is pretty cool. One guy set up this home's foundation in a couple days using this modular expanded polystyrene formwork. The consolation to using non-biodegradable polystyrene as a formwork is that you leave the blocks in place, substantially increasing the R-value of the foundation. Not losing heat to the ground represents a huge energy savings in the northern climates.

The wall and roof assemblies were considered for their thermal performance and efficiency of use. Insulated concrete forms (ICF) walls are used on the load bearing axis’ where openings are limited (exposure wall) or absent (party wall). The concrete provides superior stability, i.e. no shrinkage, and durability over framed walls. The layout of walls and openings (west elevation/A4) allowed for the whole or half block modules so that no cutting was required. There was no waste from these forms. In addition ICF walls have an R value of 22.7 and no thermal bridging - which effectively increases their performance over that value. The mass of the concrete provides some modulation to temperature swings

 

Light (2x6@24” centre) framed walls were used on the south and north elevations where larger opening and greater transparency was desired. A soya based closed cell spray foam with recycled fiber (Polar Foam) was applied to the exterior framed walls resulting in an R value of 35. Polar Foam was also used to insulate floors suspended over unheated space, increasing the R value over traditional ‘batt’ insulation while also mitigating the thermal bypass (air gap) between insulation and heated space. Made to measure pre-engineered joists and beams where used throughout. These assemblies contributed to an estimated 60% reduction in construction waste. Finally, the extra deep roof trusses specified allowed for a vented roof with combined R59 batt with . The flat roof allows for the future provision of solar collectors or photovoltaic panels. Triple glazed windows and double glazed doors with argon filled spaces and low e coatings add to the thermal performance.

 

The simplicity of the basic parti – light stick framing suspended between insulated concrete walls (party/ party or exposure / party) – anticipates extrapolation into 3 -plex, 4-plex and row housing arrangements. A variety of roof forms and inclinations can accommodate the requirements of solar collectors or photovoltaic panels orientation particular to the site. The clear span structure will allow for plan variations in design or for adaptive re-use without the need for structural modification.

The 275,000-square-foot school is built to serve up to 1,400 students.

Well, it is made from soybeans. www.BioBased.net supplies a spray foam insulation alternative to petroleum based versions. It emits no-VOCs or CFC and has no formaldehyde. The open cell version provides R value of 3.83/inch and virtually eliminates air gaps and infiltration heating and cooling losses. We got closed cell (which has a higher R-value) for the basement which they ended up using on the first floor, too. They applied about 4 inches. (I should have made them go full depth for the whole ceiling. Foam insulators never want to go full depth for some reason.)

Prior to the application of the Pacific Pattern on a QUANSA Hut style cabin. We increased the R-value and the walkability of the roof as well as creating a maintenance free scenario for the client.

Platinum SIPS offer a higher R-Value than standard Premier SIPS, enabling the roof to be 2" thinner. This difference in thickness saved an entire flat bed of transportation costs!

We vacuum and remove old insulation and re-insulate with high performing, long lasting new insulation technologies. Old insulation looses R-value over time and can provide living areas for insects and other pests.

The installer is applying a 1" layer of closed cell insulation before regular batt insulation is placed over the top. This will combined for a R-value of 18.

How to apply IRUV Liquid Film - Thermal Insulating Glass Coating on to the glass window. This is the final step, main coating part which takes less than 5 min. Before this all the pre-cleaning of the surface and taping the frames around the window have to be done. Easy, Affordable, Energy saving Solution that anyone can do it.

Our existing brick walls are brick, CMU, strapping, metal lath and plaster. This should double the R value.

I figure I should share my latest work. I have been involved in remodeling this awesome home. It was built in 1954 as part of Austin's air conditioned village. 21 homes were built in a joint venture between a US government housing agency called The National Association of Home Builders [NAHB] and the University of Texas at Austin to test many different central air-conditioning systems as central air was the new in thing and no one really had a good idea of how to do it. This home had central air conditioning system designed by Lennox and was built by H. T. Baker who also built a home in Austin's first Parade of homes in 1953 other then that I have not been able to find out more about him. It's a post and beam home with the ducts in the slab and no attic. Ahead of it's time the roof decking is made of a recycle compressed wood product that provides some R-value. The original white built up roof was long gone by the time I acquired it. In fact, it was one of the most efficient homes in the experiment. It was In shambles before, so we took the opportunity to make some modern updates while working to keep it mid-mod. This home Alas I hated to see it go but I had to sell it once done. I pretty happy with what we made of this place.
