GST Eastern Voles Christmas gathering at Flitton Moor

Hi All & Tim

May I add my thanks to you all and wish you a happy Christmas and lots of good Voling together in 2018. I cannot wait. All those bonfires, cakes and sarcastic humour.

I thought I would be clever and write a piece about Tuesday incorporating some relevant quotes but the effort has quite overtaken me. So here instead are a few lines from a very wise & quotable Englishman .

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

There is nothing in the world so irresistibly contagious as laughter and good humour.

I loved her against reason, against promise, against peace, against hope, against happiness, against all discouragement that could be.

Never close your lips to those whom you have already opened your heart.

There are books of which the backs and covers are by far the best parts.

We forge the chains we wear in life.

No one is useless in this world who lightens the burden of it to anyone else.

There are dark shadows on the earth, but its lights are stronger in the contrast.

The pain of parting is nothing to the joy of meeting again.

Have a heart that never hardens, and a temper that never tires, and a touch that never hurts.

The whole difference between construction and creation is exactly this: that a thing constructed can only be loved after it is constructed; but a thing created is loved before it exists.

There are loads more to choose from and I have to say I was very surprised, perhaps I should read some of his books instead of relying on BBC Childrens Dramas from my earlier years when, hard to believe I was a sprog with hopes and the occasional dream, many of which have been far exceeded in life.

Many thanks for all your hard work at Flitton Moor on Tuesday. We were slightly down on the usual numbers but it didn’t stop you getting a whole lot done! I know David was pleased with the result and in his own words:

Thanks to all those who turned out on Tuesday at Flitton Moor - you did an amazing job as always.

Re fencing: I was expecting at the very most that half of the fence would be completed - and you did 2 thirds of it. Well done. The FoFM will finish it shortly in the new year.

Thanks also to those who manned the fire - and dragged brash to it. Almost all the was cut down was burnt.

And a special mention to the 6 hardy souls who spent the morning digging nettles.

The next Tuesday task will be at Sandy Smith on the 2nd January and will be doing a bit more thinning/coppicing in the plantation near the bridge over the Flit plus maybe a few other jobs.

But there will also be a task at Maulden Heath next Thursday (28th) if anyone wishes to come along. The task will be clearing brash and regeneration in the Adder Field and, of course, having a fire; meet at the Picnic Area at 10am.

I chose this movie as it is a very quotable movie. I can pick out quotes from every scene captured in this poster. I based my poster off of the original movie poster. For a Predator fan, these scenes are all very iconic and I put more quotes in the base of the poster where the credits would usually sit.

Any Given Saturday's stirring charge only to fall the barest of noses short to 2006 juvenile male champion Street Sense in the Tampa Bay Derby (G3) certainly ranks as one of the most exciting finishes on this year's Triple Crown trail. Any Given Saturday lost valuable ground when he had to go wide around the final turn while Street Sense saved ground and found a lane nearest the rail for his final run. While Street Sense's tenacity can't be discounted, particularly in view of the fact that he set a track record of 1:43.11 for the 1 1/16-mile distance, it leaves unanswered the question of whether Any Given Saturday might have collared Street Sense with a better trip.

The bigger question is, how much did the race take out of both of the colts?

Trainer Todd Pletcher reported several days after the Tampa Bay Derby that Any Given Saturday had come out of the race in good order and that the race apparently did not take that much out of the colt.

In defeat, Any Given Saturday gained a lot of admirers, not the least of which was Street Sense's trainer, Carl Nafzger.

"I've said a thousand times [Street Sense] is a helluva colt, as is Any Given Saturday, as I told Todd [Pletcher]," Nafzger said. "I congratulated him. Of all the three-year-olds that have come along, except for Breeders' Cup horses, his horse is about the best. He really ran his race. I hand it to Todd. I still think [Any Given Saturday is] one of the best horses in the crop."

Nafzger is taking Street Sense to the Blue Grass Stakes (G1) for his final Kentucky Derby (G1) prep.

"I hear Any Given Saturday is going to the Blue Grass," Nafzger said. "I wish to hell he'd go somewhere else."

Nafzger got his wish ten days before the Blue Grass when trainer Todd Pletcher decided Any Given Saturday might have a slightly easier spot in the April 7 Wood Memorial Stakes (G1) after deciding not to run Circular Quay in that race.

But Any Given Saturday failed to duplicate his Tampa Bay Derby charge in the Wood, finishing third behind winner Nobiz Like Shobiz.

"He stumbled a little out of the gate," jockey John Velazquez said. "He just acted different today. Halfway around the first turn I was able to drop behind the horses and save a little ground. He had a lot to do, getting pushed out on the first turn. I had to go sooner than I wanted to at the half-mile pole to get up with him. He ran a really hard race at Tampa. With his trip today, it was just a lot to ask."

Future Plans

While trainer Rodd Pletcher was understandable disappointed in the third-place finish in the Wood Memorial (G1), the Kentucky Derby (G1) remains on the agenda. "Maybe the three weeks off got to him, but I still believe [Any Given Saturday] is a good horse," Pletcher said. "He should have got enough earnings to secure a position in the Kentucky Derby. We got the four weeks off between races we wanted, and the earnings, but we will have to step up a notch to get it done."

Cobalt Blue got back into Triple Crown contention with an impressive wire-to-wire performance in the San Felipe Stakes (G2) after an impressive allowance win at Santa Anita Park on February 14. In that race the striking chestnut appeared beaten turning for home before changing leads and accelerating to power past the leaders for a one-length win in a commendable 1:09.12 for the six-furlongs.

That was his first start since August 13 when he finished seventh in the Best Pal Stakes (G2) at Del Mar. The colt came out of the Best Pal with a strained ligament in a hind leg and was turned out at Merv Griffin's ranch.

The San Felipe victory was a testament to how well the colt has been brought back into Triple Crown contention, and jockey Victor Espinoza had nothing but praise after the San Felipe.

"When you're on his back you can feel his power," Espinoza said. "It's great to have a horse like this for the Derby."

Cobalt Blue was originally consigned to the August 2005 Fasig-Tipton New York Saratoga open yearling sale and purchased for Robert LaPenta by trainer Nick Zito as agent for $100,000. Zito was extremely high on the colt, but his enthusiasm was short-lived when Cobalt Blue was sent to a Florida sale where Dennis O'Neill, trainer Doug O'Neill's brother, picked him up for what they consider the bargain price of $325,000.

Dennis O'Neill felt that they were getting a horse who would be best at longer distances--such as a mile and a quarter and beyond--making his six-furlong win after a long layoff all the more impressive. The San Felipe, at 1 1/16-miles, was his firat start around two turns, and Espinoza was able to set a moderate pace that had trainer Doug O'Neill smiling.

"I sure felt confident, but you never know when a colt has never gone two turns if they're really going to hold up. But it couldn't have been a better debut for a two-turn race," O'Neill said.

Shipped to Hawthorne Race Course where he was favored in the Illinois Derby (G2), Cobalt Blue suffered an apparent setback when he failed to mount any threat, finishing seventh of nine.

"As soon as he came out of the gate, he started struggling and slipping around on the track," jockey Victor Espinoza said after the Illinois Derby. "He was kind of empty at the half-mile pole. I asked him and started riding him, but he was just kind of feeling around and wasn't going anywhere."

GST Eastern Voles Christmas gathering at Flitton Moor

Hi All & Tim

May I add my thanks to you all and wish you a happy Christmas and lots of good Voling together in 2018. I cannot wait. All those bonfires, cakes and sarcastic humour.

I thought I would be clever and write a piece about Tuesday incorporating some relevant quotes but the effort has quite overtaken me. So here instead are a few lines from a very wise & quotable Englishman .

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

There is nothing in the world so irresistibly contagious as laughter and good humour.

I loved her against reason, against promise, against peace, against hope, against happiness, against all discouragement that could be.

Never close your lips to those whom you have already opened your heart.

There are books of which the backs and covers are by far the best parts.

We forge the chains we wear in life.

No one is useless in this world who lightens the burden of it to anyone else.

There are dark shadows on the earth, but its lights are stronger in the contrast.

The pain of parting is nothing to the joy of meeting again.

Have a heart that never hardens, and a temper that never tires, and a touch that never hurts.

The whole difference between construction and creation is exactly this: that a thing constructed can only be loved after it is constructed; but a thing created is loved before it exists.

There are loads more to choose from and I have to say I was very surprised, perhaps I should read some of his books instead of relying on BBC Childrens Dramas from my earlier years when, hard to believe I was a sprog with hopes and the occasional dream, many of which have been far exceeded in life.

Many thanks for all your hard work at Flitton Moor on Tuesday. We were slightly down on the usual numbers but it didn’t stop you getting a whole lot done! I know David was pleased with the result and in his own words:

Thanks to all those who turned out on Tuesday at Flitton Moor - you did an amazing job as always.

Re fencing: I was expecting at the very most that half of the fence would be completed - and you did 2 thirds of it. Well done. The FoFM will finish it shortly in the new year.

Thanks also to those who manned the fire - and dragged brash to it. Almost all the was cut down was burnt.

And a special mention to the 6 hardy souls who spent the morning digging nettles.

A Merry Christmas to all, and a healthy 2018,

The next Tuesday task will be at Sandy Smith on the 2nd January and will be doing a bit more thinning/coppicing in the plantation near the bridge over the Flit plus maybe a few other jobs.

But there will also be a task at Maulden Heath next Thursday (28th) if anyone wishes to come along. The task will be clearing brash and regeneration in the Adder Field and, of course, having a fire; meet at the Picnic Area at 10am.

There's a little gem of a movie that was released in 1966 called "Batman". It's one of my favorite movies-- it's total camp with tons of quotable lines. Among the most amusing scenes (out of many) is the "battle" with the exploding shark. Batman asks for the Shark Repellent Bat Spray, something I thought was completely fake until I saw this in the Smithsonian Air & Space museum. And I promptly began laughing my ass off and embarrassing my brother.
