Golden Rock based WDG3A 13494 on the rear of train 06659 11h35 Sengottai to Quilon Passenger on 12th December 2022. Trains are banked all the way from Tenkasi to Punalur, which is overkill really. One YDM4 used to manage trains on this section unassisted in metre gauge days.

Golden Rock WDG3A 13539 at Madurai after working train 16328 0550 Guruvayur to Madurai “Express” on 22nd October 2023. The Alco took over from an electric at Quilon Jn for the run to Madurai.

With the recent edict issued by Southern Railway to cease using Alcos on passenger and freight, I’m guessing this scene has already passed into history.

Dedicating this to an Unknown Friend, who loves the terrain & also a Lover of God's Own Country n de people around!!!

Stairway Spirals, Tangasseri Lighthouse at Quilon, Kerala, India

" I'm only human, I'm just a man

Lord, Help me believe in what I could be, and all that I am,

Show me the stairway

I have to climb, Lord for my sake

Teach me to take, one day at a time..."

Tangasseri Point Lighthouse station, Quilon/ Kollam (08 °52.7’ N 76°34.0’ E)

The British East India Co had factories at Tellicherry & Anjengo and other interests along the coast. To assist their fleet they raised a column at this site during the mid 19th century and placed on it an oil lamp. The present Tangasseri Point Lighthouse tower was established in 1902. This tower (42m above MSL) has a brick masonry murette (Red and White diagonal stripes) with wooden lining inside. The present light source is a 230V 400 W metal halide lamp (which flashes White thrice every 15 seconds having a range of 20 nautical miles) was put in to operation on 15th May 1994.

Golden Rock WDG3A 13163 shoves 06659 11h35 Sengottai to Quilon Passenger out of New Aryankavu on 13th December 2022.

The Vaccines - Wetsuit

Cannanore is a very ancient port of significance. Most cartographic depictions from the middle ages mention Quilon and Cannanore on the shore line of India. Mumbai and others did not exist.

The oldness of the city from Kerala is allied with the culture and not the trade alone of black pepper and other spices.

Theyyam is a dance form or should I say a form of folk religion where the dancer is the God and people pray to him.

So in essence the dance form has been in existence much before the advent of Bharatnatayam, Kathakali or any of the other dance forms from India that get bandied about in the cultural milieu of India.

It is an essence of nature and tribal worship that has been amalgamated and subsumed in story telling from heroic tales from Hindu epics and local lore. It is obvious that the Brahmanical influence was not so stringent and draconian as to remove the tribal and nature part of the earlier worship and thank God for that. The dance form is unique and it has to be seen to be believed. Some of the performances can be not only tough but can be quite primitive and raw from killing of live animals to eating it raw or to be jumping into fire over and over.

Line up of little and large Golden Rock ALCo power at Tirunelveli Junction on Tuesday 7th December 2004.

15524 had just arrived with train 2631, the "Nellai" Express from Chennai. 6481 was shunting around and most likely about to have trip down the Tiruchendur branch. 6311 was on train 6383, the 09:20 Express to Quilon Junction.

Ashtamudi Lake (Ashtamudi Kayal), in the Kollam District of the Indian state of Kerala, is the most visited backwater and lake in the state. It possesses a unique wetland ecosystem and a large palm-shaped (also described as octopus-shaped) water body, second only in size to the Vembanad estuary ecosystem of the state. Ashtamudi means 'eight coned' (Ashta : 'eight'; mudi : 'coned') in the local Malayalam language. The name is indicative of the lake's topography with its multiple branches. The lake is also called the gateway to the backwaters of Kerala and is well known for its houseboat and backwater resorts.

One has to pass through a few bridges while traveling from Allepey to Kovallam and

this happens to be the sight from a bridge in Kollam.

One gets to see the sight of colorful fishing boats , anchored in the back waters along with Brahmani Kites , Eagles ,Egrets who gather around these boats for their share of the bountiful harvest from the sea

Best wishes to all flickr friends. This is a relatively new mosque at Karunagapally (Kerala) by the side of NH-47. This exqisite architecture has made it an irresistible landmark in the area where there are many bigger structures.

A lone catamaran tosses and heaves on the limpid green waters of the Indian ocean close to a rock face.

On the high seas of the Indian Ocean lies the settlement of Kovalam. Not as famous as the ancient cities of Quilon or Cannanore which were busy trading ports in the ancient times.

Kovalam is a popular destination now a days for its beautiful beach and the clear waters The tourists mainly from Europe come to pass their winters in warm and affordable shores of the Indian beach towns.

In the winter months along with the migration of the tourists comes the demand for all kinds of sea food.

Some fishermen have specilised in diving for mussels.

A single helix of concrete stands tall in its red core and a white strand looping around it.

It carries the spiral code to check the water levels of the primarily water borne civilisation of ours !

And this is not the stairway that Led Zeppelin sings about even though it does reach lofty heights !

Life in Kerala exists on either sides of the backwaters in places like Alleppey (Allappuzzah), Kumarakom, Quilon (Kollam) and you see sights that amaze you and confound you and then you see them again on another day in a totally different light condition and the feeling and emotions are different. And you begin to see magic in life.

Taken at the Tangasseri Lighthouse at Quilon. There is a lighthouse close to a two kilometer walkway into the sea. This was taken from top of the lighthouse. The walkway is beautiful too - lot of really good graffiti work on the rocks there.

The line climbs through some spectacular scenery and 6200 almost slipped to a stand at one point. The ALP ended up hanging off the front dribbling bags of sand to increase adhesion.
