I made some biscuits this afternoon, my first attempt at a wheat-free version. In fact, I think the last time I made biscuits was in high school when I made some for my mom and accidentally used baking soda instead of baking powder (definitely not a good experience).
Today I made these to go with some tasty soup that my mom made, and they are a success! I probably should have used a dairy-free margarine because I'm allergic to dairy, but sometimes I let myself enjoy a bit of butter. I did use non-dairy milk and goat cheese though.
Here's the recipe:
Sift together:
1 3/4 c flour (I used 1c. gluten free flour mix and 3/4c. stone ground spelt)
1Tbsp baking powder
a bit of salt
Mix in some grated cheese (I used a tasty hard goat cheese)
Cut in:
approx 1/4c butter
Make a well in the centre and add:
3/4c. milk (I used soy milk)
Stir with a fork until just mixed. Turn out on to well-floured surface and knead briefly. I patted it in to a rectangle, about 1/2 inch thick. Then I cut it pizza-style. (you can also roll the dough out and cut in to with the bottom of a glass or a cookie cutter, but that seemed too fussy for me). Bake on an ungreased cookie sheet for 12-15 mins at 450 degrees.
Now try to resist eating them all at once!

Mum threw this quick dish together and we had a short meal because we planned to go over to my uncle's place.
Dad had some stuff to sort out before we left so mum decided to take a nap.
When dad was finished it was already time for AI and he suggested we watch before we left. I tried to wake mum up. She did and she groggily said, "Let's go tomorrow, I'm too sleepy."
So I was kind of pissed but I got over it.
Later that night, as AI was ending, I muttered that we didn't get to go to see Gabe (the baby we really meant to see) and mum said it was dad's fault because he wanted to watch AI when we could have gone to the other house to watch it.
I told mum that, No, it was she who insisted we stayed.
Bottom line is, mum couldn't believe that what I just told you had happened. She said she even argued with dad that we should go.

At least the pasta was nice.
The actual picnic area had too many gnats. So we used the picnic table that normally covers the wheel well.

There's a limit to how many items we can perceive numerically at a glance, but the limit can be raised by early training. We did some of that with our child as a baby. Lacking a suitable control, I have no idea whether it made a difference or not... but they're really good at math now.
My friend the Green Heron is back. This time I caught him making a quick meal out of a small crayfish. I sat and watched him for about 5 minutes trying to figure out how to eat this guy.
I cannot believe how quickly this flew off the needles. This is all one piece; the effect is achieved by casting off, and then casting on new stitches for the next ring, every six to eight rows. I thought that would be difficult, time consuming, and tedious, but it turned out to be quick and smooth.
This is Malabrigo Silky Merino in the colorway "Smoke" (hence the name of the project); it's a great dark gray (one of my favorite colors) and it's so very soft. I already love it! I will almost certainly make more of these.

This is the first thing that came into my head as the bus was coming down the road. Ran into a friend and wanted to show the stain off so offered a quick design, was it ever quick. Not my best but not too bad I suppose.
I did a couple custom stamps yesterday and then decided to try carving one from a little doodle that I liked. Tried not to focus too much on super clean lines.

whilst shooting pollen for the paper yesterday, i stood on my trunk and tried to get artsy fartsy. not exactly a success. at least not in journalistic terms. but i was pollen-crazed by then.
sadly, on the way to an assignment today, Smurfette, my beautiful blue (NOT PURPLE) car went KAPUT on a busy street. she is at the doctor right now. let's all say a quick silent prayer it'll be an easy, inexpensive fix? and hopefully i won't have to drive around in this lame rental car for long. hello, i have a reputation to build in this new city, people.
