A quick stop at Dinorwic on the way home. There had been some big showers all day in Snowdonia but with no sign of any light. Thankfully just before I left, the sun came out after another soaking.

For week 4 of the 52 week challenge, the theme is astrophotography / Night photography.
Limiting the success of my photo this week however is the fact that I've been literally in bed sick for 4 days.... So sadly this is the best that is going to happen. It took me all of 5 minutes of shooting and a few more on lightroom. Not my fav, but my my energy level and motivation are not allowing for much more! And to play to up the 'woe is me' some more (I'm still feeling sick and hence sorry for myself), my tripod broke so this photo was taken balancing my camera on a ledge.
Another quick look at Gulf Mobile & Ohio GP35 #631 at Belleville, Illinois being towed on NS train 112. GM&O #631 is on it's trek west to Kansas City, Missouri from the Southern Appalachia Railway Museum in Oak Ridge, TN. I wonder whats next in store for this unit?

There is a silence near the old stone bridge of Jormua, which is only broken by the quiet wind. But in some cases, roaring trains dominate the sounds of the environment, like in the case of Fenniarail's freight train that is making a quick crossing as Vectron hauls wagons to the other side of the Arctic Circle.
It was a very cloudy day and I was taking a nap at the campground. 30 minutes before sunset the clouds started to look interesting. So I quickly got up and rushed 2KM to my spot. It only took me 20 minutes, my trail walking record :)
A quick shot of the Orion Nebula (M42), one of my favourite celestial objects and a really satisfying target. I've been waiting a year for an opportunity to image this nebula again, this time with a polar alignment and guiding to enable much longer exposures than the 15 second subs I took last time and with a lower ISO to reduce noise. The next project with this is to either stitch two shots together or, better still, rotate the camera in order to fit both the Orion Nebula and the nearby Running Man Nebula into one frame.
13 x 4 minute exposures at 400 ISO
8 x dark frames
10 x flat frames
21 x bias/offset frames (subtracted from flat frames only)
Total exposure time - 52 minutes
Guided with PHD
Processed in Nebulosity, Maxim DL and Photoshop
Equipment
Celestron NexStar 127 SLT
GoTo AltAz mount with homemade wedge
Orion 50mm Mini Guide Scope
ZWO ASI120 MC guiding camera
Canon EOS 700D DSLR
[Wikipedia] The Orion Nebula (also known as Messier 42, M42, or NGC 1976) is a diffuse nebula situated in the Milky Way, being south of Orion's Belt in the constellation of Orion. It is one of the brightest nebulae, and is visible to the naked eye in the night sky. M42 is located at a distance of 1,344 ± 20 light years and is the closest region of massive star formation to Earth. The M42 nebula is estimated to be 24 light years across. It has a mass of about 2000 times the mass of the Sun. Older texts frequently refer to the Orion Nebula as the Great Nebula in Orion or the Great Orion Nebula.
The Orion Nebula is one of the most scrutinized and photographed objects in the night sky, and is among the most intensely studied celestial features. The nebula has revealed much about the process of how stars and planetary systems are formed from collapsing clouds of gas and dust. Astronomers have directly observed protoplanetary disks, brown dwarfs, intense and turbulent motions of the gas, and the photo-ionizing effects of massive nearby stars in the nebula. [Wikipedia]

A quick nosy back through April's holiday photies reminded me I hadn't uploaded any of the pics I took here using David's wide angle Sigma lens! This is exactly the lens I'm going to buy and was v chuffed to have a go... can't believe I missed this one out - it's one of my faves from here :-)

A quick still life from the other day; I wasn't really feeling an elaborate still life set up so I went with simple and made us of the natural light that was coming through the windows.
Hope everyone has had a good day.

I wanted to take more pictures of Addie but a big tour group arrived and I quickly walked away, haha!
Four minutes before the sun disappeared below the horizon behind me, the light was dropping quickly. Owen Conservation Park, Madison, Wisconsin, USA, January 8, 2025, 4:37 PM.
a perfect highlight of why nice underwear is important (thanks for the advice, mom. :P ) I completely forgot what event this was now, but had a really gorgeous setting.
