A quick shot of the Orion Nebula (M42), one of my favourite celestial objects and a really satisfying target. I've been waiting a year for an opportunity to image this nebula again, this time with a polar alignment and guiding to enable much longer exposures than the 15 second subs I took last time and with a lower ISO to reduce noise. The next project with this is to either stitch two shots together or, better still, rotate the camera in order to fit both the Orion Nebula and the nearby Running Man Nebula into one frame.

13 x 4 minute exposures at 400 ISO

8 x dark frames

10 x flat frames

21 x bias/offset frames (subtracted from flat frames only)

Total exposure time - 52 minutes

[Wikipedia] The Orion Nebula (also known as Messier 42, M42, or NGC 1976) is a diffuse nebula situated in the Milky Way, being south of Orion's Belt in the constellation of Orion. It is one of the brightest nebulae, and is visible to the naked eye in the night sky. M42 is located at a distance of 1,344 ± 20 light years and is the closest region of massive star formation to Earth. The M42 nebula is estimated to be 24 light years across. It has a mass of about 2000 times the mass of the Sun. Older texts frequently refer to the Orion Nebula as the Great Nebula in Orion or the Great Orion Nebula.

The Orion Nebula is one of the most scrutinized and photographed objects in the night sky, and is among the most intensely studied celestial features. The nebula has revealed much about the process of how stars and planetary systems are formed from collapsing clouds of gas and dust. Astronomers have directly observed protoplanetary disks, brown dwarfs, intense and turbulent motions of the gas, and the photo-ionizing effects of massive nearby stars in the nebula. [Wikipedia]

Just a quick trip to Jamaica, mahn.

Had a quick go on Orion this evening. This is a stack of 6 x 3 minute subs at f2.8, ISO 800 with 50mm lens with Canon 1100d unmodded camera. CLS clip filter attached.

As it was nearly 100 degrees out, that was OK. A bit warm for September in Morocco.

Built in a fertile agricultural area, it developed from the 3rd century BC onward as a Berber, then proto-Carthaginian, settlement. It grew rapidly under Roman rule from the 1st century AD onward and expanded to cover about 100 acres with a 1.6 mi circuit of walls.

The Romans brought their aqua-ducts and introduced olive trees. Prosperity, which was derived principally from olive growing, prompted the construction of many fine town-houses with large mosaic floors. The city of roughly 20,000-30,000 people, gained a number of major public buildings in the 2nd century, including a basilica, temple and triumphal arch. The city fell to local tribes around 285 and was never retaken by Rome because of its remoteness and indefensibility.

If you are a history buff, Morocco is Nirvana. I think every major historical event regarding human civilization included Morocco at some point.

All three Greek column types were found here, Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian, but I was most impressed with the mosaic floors. After 2000 years, they are still in incredible condition, fine details and colors, and still so beautiful!

The female Kestrel manages a morsel of the prey for herself while the chicks are sleeping along the scrape from her.

I find this very helpful. It is not the only way to ID these insects but it is quick and good for those of us who are not experts.

You will have to view in LARGE to see the detail of the antennae.

The very long tails are the hallmark of the summer brood. An early spring, multi-brooded butterfly with each successive brood displays bolder stripes and longer tails.

No sooner had I touched down in Cyprus than I was planning my return journey home due to family illness back in the UK & didn't even have chance to unpack my camera from it's case. Things are looking much better now but my flickr time is limited at the moment so please accept my apologies if I'm not able to visit as often as I'd like for a while.
