Enthusiasts of radio-controlled drones or UAV showed up for a small meet. Some had home-made machines and others had commercially manufactured machines. Everyone customizes their flying machines!

I flew my quadcopter this weekend on an oval near my parents place. I still suck at flying it but the frame managed to survive some hard landings from me. One problem was the feet- they can hook in to the grass. My brother explained that it happens with helicopter skids too.

Prior to this I’d tried to practice and learn with this my Blade mSR. The end result was another jinx from my brother who had said if you hit the tail motor you can remove the end and it’s all over until you replace the motor / whole tail. So here’s the smashed motor below and a replacement my brother gave me above. The new one is modified with a white blade and a ring bracket holding the motor end in place.

We were enjoying pizza at one of our favorite places, Enzo's in St. Andrews, when I was talking with our server about how I took the aerial photo of St. Andrews last week. I told her I would get an aerial shot of Enzo's one night, and then decided tonight would be that perfect night. While this is OK I have decided that the Phantom really needs more light, guess I will head back just before sunset one day soon :)

Taken from quadcopter. Guys race remote control yachts in the further away pond some days. But good weather for yachts and good weather for quadcopters are two different things.

Setup and first test flights of the DJI Phantom Quadcopter at Robert Gordon University, Garthdee, in the grounds of Riverside East and the Faculty of Health and Social Care Buildings.

Well here it is the video from the GoPro Hero 2 attached to my brother’s quadcopter. It suffered a rather major problem during the flight and dropped from around 12m (~40 feet) up. We are guessing it was a radio brownout. Watch to see the action.

The video was shot at 960p (1280x960) at 25fps with wide 170 degree FOV on a GoPro Hero 2. It’s been edited and squished before being uploaded.

Flying over the parade

This tower is only a few years old, and even though it has had some vandalism there is a lot of just rot due to lousy construction. I’m kind of glad they never built any real homes if they weren’t going to last any longer than the tower has withstood the elements.

This is the “HobbyKing Quadcopter Control Board V2 (Atmega168PA)” [QUAD-CON16K] board. It’s bases on the KK control board. It contains three Japanese Murata piezo gyros for roll, pitch and yaw that are meant to be less sensitive to vibration than other gyros. The board has an Atmega168PA micro controller.

The board is meant to stabilise the quadcopter during flight. While there is documentation and I understand some of it I’m still struggling with this board. Adjusting the pots for roll, pitch and yaw is proving difficult but may not be the cause of my failing to fly.

Because sometimes you just have to post a selfie, even if it is from the quadcopter!
