Cosmic smoke & telescope mirrors?

Webb found complex organic molecules similar to smoke or smog in a galaxy more than 12 billion light-years from Earth. This sets a new record for the most distant detection of these big, complicated molecules: bit.ly/43M4YEG

The distant galaxy in question lies behind a much closer foreground galaxy. The gravity of the foreground galaxy is so great that it distorts and magnifies the light of the galaxy behind it, making it easier to see.

In space, where there’s smoke, there are stars — usually. But this galaxy might change astronomers’ long-held belief: These “smoky molecules” were abundant in some areas with little star formation, or were scarce in some areas with active star birth.

Due to how far light from this galaxy had to travel, we’re seeing this galaxy as it was back when the universe was < 1.5 billion years old. The discovery suggests that complex chemistry began occurring in the universe much earlier than we thought.

This image: The galaxy observed by Webb shows an Einstein ring caused by a phenomenon known as lensing, which occurs when two galaxies are almost perfectly aligned from our perspective on Earth. The gravity from the galaxy in the foreground causes the light from the background galaxy to be distorted and magnified, like looking through the stem of a wine glass. Because they are magnified, lensing allows astronomers to study very distant galaxies in more detail than otherwise possible.

Image Description: This is an infographic with a navy blue background. At the top left it says, "What creates an Einstein Ring?" In the center is a diagram. At far left is a drawing of Webb, labeled James Webb Space Telescope. In the center is a foreground galaxy, shown in blue. On the right is a background galaxy, shown in red. Arrows run in a diamond shape from the red galaxy around the blue galaxy, and to Webb. The lines are labeled "Distorted light rays." At the bottom there is another arrow pointing to the right that says "Looking further into the past." which implies the galaxy shown in red is older and farther away than the foreground galaxy, which has warped its light. At far right is the inset Webb image of the Einstein ring. In this inset, on a black background, there are two notable objects. There is a foreground galaxy seen as a big bright blue dot at the center of the frame. It is surrounded by an orange ring meant to highlight the discovery of organic molecules in the galaxy whose light has been bent into a circle. Near the top left of the image, there is also a distant background galaxy represented as a tiny red dot.

“Posh, I know you are very clever and so I think you may be able to help me.” Said Sky.

“I’ll try Sky, what is the question?”

“Well, I’ve been thinking,”

“Oh no Sky, don’t ever do that.” Sniggered Bertie.

“This is serious Bertie, let me ask my question before I forget what it is.”

“Very well, what is the question you have Sky?”

“Well, I’ve been thinking, where we all come from and what Posh said yesterday about logic.”

“We are all bears Sky so I am sure we all come from the same place.” Bertie said.

“No, Paddington says he comes from Preview.”

“It’s called Peru Sky and that is far away in South America.” Said Posh.

“Well, Linda Bear told me she comes from Canada and she loves that maple syrup more than honey.”

“Yes, well Canada is in North America and I think it is what you get used to eating Sky, we’re not all quite the same.”

“Ice Cap, he comes from the Arctic so he told us, he eats fish.”

“That is right Sky, he comes from above Canada. It is very cold up there but as his fur is extra thick, he doesn’t get cold.”

“So, while we are all the same, we are all different then?” Said Sky looking confused.

“Yes, in ways we are different but we are all bears. I still don’t understand your question Sky.”

“Logic Posh, your logic confused me.”

“How so?”

“When the man came home yesterday with those pretty yellow things on stalks, I asked you what they were if you remember. You said they were buttercups, I was impressed and asked how you knew this and you said that they were flowers and yellow, buttercups are flowers and yellow so they must be buttercups.”

“Right so what is so complicated about that logic?”

“I am a brown bear, Bertie and you are brown bears, but you’re not me, are you? Do you think logically there might be more than one yellow flower Posh?”

“I don’t think so Sky, after all why would there be? I can’t see the need for more than one. With bears its different, we are all shapes and sizes, some with thick fur and others short fur, plus we are clever, unlike flowers.”

“I don’t know Posh, something that comes up every year and looks gorgeous, smells divine and needs such little help from the man is pretty clever in my book.” Said Bertie.

“Buttercups, that’s what they are and always will be.” Said Posh looking grumpy.

MARVEL_DOLLS and I are happy to announce the A-Z Doll Photography Challenge will return in just a few days. We hope you're as excited as we are!

Photo themes will be posted to Audra's (MARVEL_DOLLS) account and the photo group page, so be sure to watch for a post with descriptions of A, B and C in February.

Your opinions are important to the success of the group, so please take a moment to answer Yes or No to two questions:

1) This group had featured a voting process, much like the Blonde Bombshell group. Would you like to continue monthly nominations and voting to recognize your favorite photos for the themes? (Yes or no)

2) Would you like to be tagged to each photo announcing monthly themes and possible voting announcements?

(A "no" vote means you will not see notices about the group on your "Recent Activity" feed on flickr or receive an email notification depending on your settings.)

What won't change: Anyone can vote, and anyone is invited to participate with any fashion doll. The themes are broad frameworks to stimulate creativity, and most importantly, participation is fluid, so come and go as your schedule and creativity allows.

If you haven't yet joined our photo group page, you can do so here: www.flickr.com/groups/2962397@N20/

We look forward to your feedback and hope you're ready for a new year of fun!

How big is a seagull? Judging by the one atop the question mark they are frigging big. I like the person on the bill board behind me who looks like they are sitting on the installation.

What is the best program to use to fix eye makeup? I'm showing the original photo and my not very great way to eliminate smeared makeup. Help!

Aside from judging most works in progress, I was thinking of putting up work on places like Reddit (just for example), but I'm hesitant. Does anyone here have multiple accounts across platforms?

Also looking for personal discussions. If anyone would want to talk outside, use DM or Flickrmail is also a good way.

As far as I can remember, there was a question mark at the end of my sentence!

That's how I gathered a load of knowledge, never been afraid to ask a question, so the subject of this image a very useful tool all through my life!

View On Black

Always hungry for the how and why.

Yet, I, luckily, do not suffer from morbid curiosity about other people. I am a good listener, they can tell me things, I'm interested, but I will rarely ask personal questions.

I don't consider this indifference, I call it respect.

Think before you ask... there are questions... you HAVE to be able to live with the answer!

If and when I want to photograph someone or something, I ask, if the answer is yes, I am happy, if it is no, I respect it, at least I ASKED!

“There are these four ways of answering questions. Which four?

There are questions that should be answered categorically [straightforwardly yes, no, this, that].

There are questions that should be answered with an analytical (qualified) answer [defining or redefining the terms].

There are questions that should be answered with a counter-question.

There are questions that should be put aside.

These are the four ways of answering questions.”

Why not view the set as a slide-show?

Also I often upload more than one image at the same time; I see a tendency to only view the last uploaded...

. . . and exercise your right to vote!

It's time for the questions and answers this is for two things first and I'm almost a year in Flickr and second is almost my birthday and that's why I decided to do this I can ask something about me what they want to know

Pictured above are GA bad Bane , both utilizing the new combat legs I bought at BN today.

EG parts are extremely treasured by me, and I take extra special care of them. But as soon as I bent the legs up and back down on my GA, the printing on the buckle of the upper strap chipped off a little.

I was wondering if this has ever happened to you guys, and if so, leave it as a comment down below. Thanks. :)

This was actually a really cool sunset shot taken about the same time as the previous image. I was messing around with Silver Efex Pro2 and noticed some hidden adjustments. I thought I would try them out on this conversion and see what I could make of it...I like how it transformed the entire image to give it an entirely different feel.

MADAGASCAR VINCA or Catharanthus roseus

+ Also known as vinca-de-gato or simply as vinca, or even good night, kiss of the mulata and maria-sem-shame and other popular names is a small plant endemic to Madagascar. Ok, after the TECHNICAL NEWS, come on, I'm a fan of beautiful photographic images and not equipment. Also, for me, photos have no age or time, what does it matter even if it's a beautiful, poetic, quality image. I don't ask what kind of brush Picasso used and whether he painted in what year; because, these questions are irrelevant and meaningless to me. Obviously, whoever has a good brush (equipment) will be able to paint a picture (photo) with greater sophistication; however, I appreciate much more who makes a beautiful photo with cell phones or with input equipment. These people are true Picassos (artists) from my simple perspective.

Today's photo is a test to see if you are a high heel expert.

I have about 85 pairs of heels, most are 4" or higher stiletto heels. I really like the look of the heels in this photo, but they are by far the hardest to walk in. The question is, why?

Hints: It is not because of the heel height (these are 5") and it's not because they don't fit my feet (they fit perfectly).

We're here, and we are being all nobby about art, or are we?

Question.....Why don't you use the lens hood !?

Well, you are not required to use one, but if there are some very good reasons to do so.

So, what good is the hood?

The primary use for a lens hood is to prevent light from hitting the front lens element from the sides - reducing contrast and creating flare. Pictures taken with a lens hood installed will generally have richer colors, deeper saturation.

A secondary use for a lens hood is to protect the lens. The damage prevented can range from a finger-printed front element (a minor inconvenience) to a broken lens (possibly a major expense - and lost pictures). Lens hoods are generally strong and stick out from the lens some distance. Accidental touches and scratches to the front element are reduced simply because the glass is difficult to reach. Some impact protection is gained from having a sacrificial part taking the blow. Of course, ultra wide angle lenses have very short hoods that offer very little protection.

Lens hoods on longer focal length lenses offer some front lens element protection from rain and dust. The hood helps to keep the front element clean and dry. Of course, if your lens is not weather sealed, you should not let it get wet in the first place.

But lens hoods are expensive - and inconvenient. Yes. But your lens was probably much more expensive - and you are shooting with a D-SLR because you want the best possible image quality (not because it was convenient and inexpensive).

A small convenience tip: If the lens hood fits too tightly for your liking, add a little body oil to the threads. Your body oil - from your forehead, nose ... The hood will be much easier to twist on.

Canon L Lens series lenses generally ship with the proper lens hood. Non-L Canon lens hoods generally cost about $25 and are available from many of the retailers on this site.

Get in the habit of always using a lens hood!

Custom Cinderella Live Action Kit doll - With Blue eyes !

It's been bugging me FOREVER that the Disney Store got Kit's eye colour wrong on his dolls. I mean "Hello", his eyes are REALLY very blue in the movie, so I haven't the foggiest idea what idiot didn't pay enough attention and decided to make them brown for the doll ?

But anyway, yesterday I decided to do something about this little gripe of mine. So I repainted the eyes of one of my Kit dolls. Here's a quick phone-piccy comparison shot with a standard Kit alongside ... My repainted one is the one on the right here by the way, in case you cant tell, hehehe :p ;)

It was certainly a BIG challenge painting something this small. After all this was only my 3rd ever repaint. But I'm relatively happy with how he turned out, and at least he looks a little more cheerful now. Plus he has less of that creepy serial killer sideglance he had going on before.

The only question now is ... Do I do the same to my other 2 x Kit dolls ? ... Hmmmmm ?? :p ;)

Saturday evening. Bottle of Prosecco, strawberries & cream and chocolates, with a chick-flick or two.

Question is, should I stay relaxed or put a dress on?

Sometimes the question isn't always clear. Just keep searching and asking... never stop questioning everything!

Can you help me?

It's been a long time since Nikki and I last saw a movie in a theater. As you know, Zorie isn't old enough to stay on her seat until the movie ends. I have had the projector for several years and now we use it as if we were in a cinema. Now, it's very convenient to see movies at home and we won't be worried if Zorie keeps asking questions about the movie or something.

Note the mark that resembles a flattened question mark.
