Under the step pyramid of Djoser is a labyrinth of tunnelled chambers and galleries that total nearly 6 km in length and connect to a central shaft 7 m square and 28 m deep. These spaces provide room for the king's burial, the burial of family members, and the storage of goods and offerings. The entrance to the 28 m shaft was built on the north side of the pyramid, a trend that would remain throughout the Old Kingdom.

In case anyone that has been following me on Twitter was wondering what the heck I have been talking about when I referenced some old slides I had found, here is one of them.
Taken on my very first SLR, a Nikon N4004s with the 35-70mm kit lens, during a short cruise that I took down to Egypt in October 1992. This is one of the smaller pyramids at Giza which is outside of Cairo (which you can kind of see in the background).

Khafre's Pyramid appears larger than the adjacent Khufu Pyramid by virtue of its more elevated location, and the steeper angle of inclination of its construction – it is, in fact, smaller in both height and volume. Khafre's Pyramid retains a prominent display of casing stones at its apex. (From Wikipedia)

Aerial view of the top of the Pyramid, at Giza - Note the markings in the stone (Ages unknown). Atop this was the pyramidion, or benben stone in Egyptian, which completed a pyramid or an obelisk. Usually they were made of granite, diorite or fine limestone and were decorated with carvings. Archaeologists have found some of them.
