Roads within the capital are very much better maintained than elsewhere in the country. This road gets much worse a short distance away, once it gets out of the city.

I'm surprised they let us up here with cameras... the other view from the Juche Tower, looking away from the river. Naturally, even the crumbling office blocks are adorned with a Kim Il Sung portrait.

It's not a question of grabbing the best seat, but of squeezing on to the next packed bus at all.

Outside the subway station, many North Koreans lead fairly 'normal' lives.
