Work started in 1987 on this ambitious 330m tall hotel with several thousand rooms, which was originally intended for completion by 1989. Construction has stopped and started several times since then, and the interior remained a long way from completion in 2013. The existing Pyongyang hotels are far from full, so the market for this huge new hotel is not obvious.

De Pyongyang metro is druk en doet efficiënt aan. Op de roltrappen die je meer dan 100 meter onder de grond of weer naar boven brengen staat het vol met Noord Koreanen. De metro’s rijden zo ongeveer om de 5 minuten en zien er heel wat netter uit dan die in Amsterdam. Er staan beeldige meisjes met halt bordjes de metro’s binnen te halen, mensen vlot in te laten stappen en de metro’s weer uit te laten rijden. De 3 stations die bij wij gezien hebben zijn prachtig gedecoreerd, compleet met mozaïek murals en kroonluchters.
