Japanese art print by Yoshimichi Fujimoto (1919-1992)

Came across a pair of these birds by accident, by hearing a call I wasn't familiar with and then looking for where it was coming from. I'd never heard of this bird before I then looked it up.

The collared finchbill (Spizixos semitorques) is a species of songbird in the Pycnonotidae family. It is found in China, Taiwan, and Vietnam.

The species favors hilled forests at moderate elevations. Primarily a frugivore, the collared finchbill also eats seeds and insects. The birds are typically monogamous, with females building nests in trees in which to lay their eggs. This songbird is slightly smaller than an American robin, with an olive-green body, thick ivory bill, dark gray head with white streaks on the cheeks, and a white collar between the breast and throat.

Yellow-bellied Bulbul

The yellow-bellied bulbul (Alophoixus phaeocephalus) is a species of songbird in the bulbul family, Pycnonotidae. It is found on the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Borneo. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests.

The yellow-bellied bulbul was originally described in the genus Ixos and alternatively classified in the now defunct genus Trichixos. It was later placed in the genus Criniger until moved to the genus Alophoixus in 2009. Alternate names for the yellow-bellied bulbul include the crestless white-throated bulbul, grey-capped bulbul, grey-headed bearded bulbul, grey-headed bulbul, white-throated bulbul and yellow-bellied bearded-bulbul. The common name 'yellow-bellied bulbul' is also used as an alternate name for the yellow-bellied greenbul. The alternate name 'grey-headed bulbul' should not be confused with the species of the same name, Pycnonotus priocephalus. The common name 'yellow-bellied bulbul' is also used as an alternate name for the white-throated bulbul. The alternate name 'white-throated bulbul' should not be confused with the species of the same name, Alophoixus flaveolus.

Black-headed Bulbul

The black-headed bulbul (Pycnonotus atriceps) is a member of the bulbul family, Pycnonotidae. It is found in forests in south-eastern Asia.

The black-headed bulbul has a mainly olive-yellow plumage with a glossy bluish-black head. A grey morph where most of the olive-yellow is replaced by grey also exists. It resembles the black-crested bulbul, but has blue eyes (though not reliable in juveniles), a broad yellow tip to the tail, and never shows a crest (however, some subspecies of the black-crested are also essentially crestless, but they have red or yellow throats).

The black-headed bulbul mainly feeds on small fruit and berries, but will also take insects. It commonly occurs in small flocks, comprising 6-8 individuals.
