Family Pycnonotidae- the bulbuls (etc.)
This is an important family in Asia and Africa that is absent from the New World. The book says this species is among the most common birds in Africa. I can believe it from my limited home range. They also seem to make a variety of vocalizations. I'm constantly tracking noises back to these guys.
Ochraceous Bulbul
The ochraceous bulbul (Alophoixus ochraceus) is a species of songbird in the bulbul family, Pycnonotidae. It is found from Southeast Asia to Sumatra and Borneo. It is usually found in the mid-storey of broad-leaved evergreen and rainforests up to 1500 metres elevation.
The ochraceous bulbul was originally described in the genus Criniger until moved to the genus Alophoixus in 2009. Alternate names for the ochraceous bulbul include the brown white-throated bulbul and ochraceous bearded-bulbul.

Family Pycnonotidae - bulbuls
This is the common bulbul in Namibia, the southwestern African replacement of its more widespread close relative Common Bulbul. There are lots of bulbul species in more forested parts of Africa. Most are sneaky and habitat-specific. In contrast, this species is impossible not to see on campus every day here at NUST in urban Windhoek, as was Common Bulbul on the campus at Mweka. It turns out that these conspicuous and habitat generalist Pycnonotus bulbuls are a distinct clade that colonized Africa from Asia and behave quite differently from the rest of the family in Africa. A shoutout to LSU colleagues Haw Chuan Lim and and Fred Sheldon for figuring this out.

The Common Bulbul (Pycnonotus barbatus) is a member of the bulbul family of passerine birds. It is a ubiquitous resident breeder throughout Africa. Other names include Black-eyed Bulbul and Common Garden Bulbul.
The bulbuls are a widespread family of songbirds, found much over Africa and Asia.
The Common Bulbul has a number of subspecies; some authorities consider P. b. dodsoni (Dodson’s Bulbul), P. b. somaliensis (Somali Bulbul) and P. b. tricolor (Dark-capped Bulbul) as separate species from the nominate P. b. barbatus.
Yellow-bellied Bulbul
The yellow-bellied bulbul (Alophoixus phaeocephalus) is a species of songbird in the bulbul family, Pycnonotidae. It is found on the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Borneo. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests.
The yellow-bellied bulbul was originally described in the genus Ixos and alternatively classified in the now defunct genus Trichixos. It was later placed in the genus Criniger until moved to the genus Alophoixus in 2009. Alternate names for the yellow-bellied bulbul include the crestless white-throated bulbul, grey-capped bulbul, grey-headed bearded bulbul, grey-headed bulbul, white-throated bulbul and yellow-bellied bearded-bulbul. The common name 'yellow-bellied bulbul' is also used as an alternate name for the yellow-bellied greenbul. The alternate name 'grey-headed bulbul' should not be confused with the species of the same name, Pycnonotus priocephalus. The common name 'yellow-bellied bulbul' is also used as an alternate name for the white-throated bulbul. The alternate name 'white-throated bulbul' should not be confused with the species of the same name, Alophoixus flaveolus.
Subspecies
Four subspecies are recognized:
A. p. phaeocephalus - (Hartlaub, 1844): Found on the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra
A. p. connectens - Chasen & Kloss, 1929: Found in north-eastern Borneo
A. p. diardi - (Finsch, 1867): Originally described as a separate species in the genus Criniger. Found in western Borneo
A. p. sulphuratus - (Bonaparte, 1850): Originally described as a separate species in the genus Trichophorus (a synonym for Criniger). Found in central Borneo

The collared finchbill (Spizixos semitorques) is a species of songbird in the Pycnonotidae family. It is found in China, Taiwan, and Vietnam.
The species favors hilled forests at moderate elevations. Primarily a frugivore, the collared finchbill also eats seeds and insects. The birds are typically monogamous, with females building nests in trees in which to lay their eggs. This songbird is slightly smaller than an American robin, with an olive-green body, thick ivory bill, dark gray head with white streaks on the cheeks, and a white collar between the breast and throat.

Endemic of Taiwan
學名: Pycnonotus taivanus Styan
英名: Formosan bulbul
Family : Pycnonotidae (鵯科). Length: 18cm.
The Taiwan Bulbul or Styan's Bulbul Pycnonotus taivanus is an endemic species of bulbul that lives in eastern and southern Taiwan. Though common in some areas, it has been listed as a species vulnerable to extinction. Its decline has been caused by habitat destruction and hybridisation with the closely related Chinese or Light-vented Bulbul Pycnonotus sinensis; the two species ranges overlap in several areas, partly because birds of the latter species have been released for Buddhist ceremonies. The species has already become extinct in Yilan County.
The Taiwan Bulbul has a very similar appearance to the Chinese Bulbul, but differ in the patterns on the head. The Taiwan Bulbul has a completely black crown with white feathers around its eye, except for a black moustachial stripe below the beak. Hybrids are intermediate between the two species, with the moustachial stripe and white feathers around the eye, but the white feathers extend behind the crown.
