Yellow-bellied Bulbul

The yellow-bellied bulbul (Alophoixus phaeocephalus) is a species of songbird in the bulbul family, Pycnonotidae. It is found on the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Borneo. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests.

The yellow-bellied bulbul was originally described in the genus Ixos and alternatively classified in the now defunct genus Trichixos. It was later placed in the genus Criniger until moved to the genus Alophoixus in 2009. Alternate names for the yellow-bellied bulbul include the crestless white-throated bulbul, grey-capped bulbul, grey-headed bearded bulbul, grey-headed bulbul, white-throated bulbul and yellow-bellied bearded-bulbul. The common name 'yellow-bellied bulbul' is also used as an alternate name for the yellow-bellied greenbul. The alternate name 'grey-headed bulbul' should not be confused with the species of the same name, Pycnonotus priocephalus. The common name 'yellow-bellied bulbul' is also used as an alternate name for the white-throated bulbul. The alternate name 'white-throated bulbul' should not be confused with the species of the same name, Alophoixus flaveolus.

Subspecies

Four subspecies are recognized:

A. p. phaeocephalus - (Hartlaub, 1844): Found on the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra

A. p. connectens - Chasen & Kloss, 1929: Found in north-eastern Borneo

A. p. diardi - (Finsch, 1867): Originally described as a separate species in the genus Criniger. Found in western Borneo

The Mountain Bulbul (Ixos mcclellandii) is a songbird species in the bulbul family (Pycnonotidae). It is often placed in Hypsipetes, but seems to be closer to the type species of the genus Ixos, the Sunda Bulbul or Green-winged Bulbul (I. virescens). It ranges across the Indian Subcontinent and Southeast Asia, and is not considered a threatened species by the IUCN.

The Himalayan bulbul (Pycnonotus leucogenys) is a species of songbird in the Pycnonotidae family. If they are mixed with humans from a young age, they will become friendly to humans. It is found in the northern regions of the Indian subcontinent as well as some adjoining areas. It is found in Afghanistan, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Tajikistan. It is the national bird of Bahrain.

Himalayan bulbul length is about 18 cm, wingspan of 25.5 to 28 cm and the weight of an average of about 30 g. Bird's head, throat, and crest are black and white . The back side, and a lengthy tail are brown, the underside and pale yellow . Both sexes have the same color. The song is a beautiful 4-piece whistle, which resembles an accelerated oriole whistle.

Hairy-backed Bulbul

The hairy-backed bulbul (Tricholestes criniger) is a songbird species in the bulbul family, Pycnonotidae. It is the sole species contained within the monotypic genus Tricholestes. It is found on the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Borneo. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests.

The hairy-backed bulbul was originally described in the genus Brachypodius (a synonym for Pycnonotus). Alternatively, some authorities have classified the hairy-backed bulbul in the genera Trichophorus (a synonym for Criniger) and Hypsipetes.

Three subspecies are currently recognized:

T. c. criniger - (Blyth, 1845): Found on the Malay Peninsula and eastern Sumatra

T. c. sericeus - (Blyth, 1865): Originally described as a separate species in the genus Criniger. Found on western Sumatra

T. c. viridis - (Bonaparte, 1854): Originally described as a separate species in the genus Trichophoropsis (a synonym for Setornis). Found on Borneo

The red-whiskered bulbul (Pycnonotus jocosus) is a passerine bird found in Asia. It is a member of the bulbul family. It is a resident frugivore found mainly in tropical Asia. It has been introduced in many tropical areas of the world where populations have established themselves. It feeds on fruits and small insects and they conspicuously perch on trees and their calls are a loud three or four note call. They are very common in hill forests and urban gardens within its range.

This bird has eluded me for 10 years. It belongs to the bulbul family, Pycnonotidae, and is found in eastern and south-eastern Africa. The genus Phyllastrephus includes the typical greenbuls, two species of brownbuls, and one leaflove.

by Koji Shoso (active early 1800s), included in Kacho Gafu (Picture Album of Flowers and Birds) – Japanese flower and bird picture book published in 1832.

The Philippine Bulbul (Hypsipetes philippinus) is a songbird species in the bulbul family (Pycnonotidae). It is often placed in the genus Ixos, but is better retained in Hypsipetes as long as this is not entirely merged into Ixos, as it is quite closely related to the type species of Hypsipetes, the Black Bulbul (H. leucocephalus).

It is endemic to the Philippines. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests; on Mount Kitanglad on Mindanao for example it is abundant in any kind of primary forest at least between 500 and 2,250 m ASL.

Fledglings of the Philippine Bulbul were recorded on Mindanao in late April, but the breeding season seems to be prolonged as females with ripe ovarian follicles were still found in April and May. Territorial songs are heard at lower altitudes as late as May, while further upslope the birds are silent at that time of year and presumably engaged in breeding activity. The Besra (Accipiter virgatus) has been recorded as a predator of young Philippine Bulbuls, and this or other goshawks might also catch adult birds.

A common and adaptable bird as long as sufficient forest remains, it is not considered a threatened species by the IUCN.

(Bulbul - [Pycnonotus blanfordi conradi] - Passerine songbird of Pycnonotidae family).

Observed almost daily around here, - but seems to be content with keeping at a certain distance to humans. I sort of mimicked it's song, and that seems to awake natural curiosity. With my bare eyes the colors appears more 'grayish' than what my camera sensor presents? The 'whitish' horizontal, parallel 'streaks' under the eyes are quite characteristics of this species.

Dull environmental documentation, with the lens pointing straight up into the blue sky, but this is the best I could produce for the moment. Thanks for looking in!
