I intended a purely formal study of shape, texture, and shadow, in this purely artificial setting. The stone wall, wooden bridge, waterfall, ponds and plants shown here in Wetlands Park at Riverstone were all installed &/or constructed from material brought in after stripping the site down to bare dirt, sculpting the land with bulldozers, covering it with impermeable clay to retain water for public enjoyment and flood control. Fungal and bacterial members of the community hitchhiked in on the planted plants, wild animals, transient wind and water. Birds, Nutria, Alligators, and I are not complaining about the artificiality, just expressing gratitude for the opportunity. Especially the photobombing juvenile Lesser Yellowlegs (I think), flashing his tail and fertilizing the pond.

Happy New Week!

A purely self indulgent shot this, a reminder of the peaceful spot beside the canal which bordered our B&B in Dymchurch, a proper little haven. Amongst the many birds and waterfowl present were two families of ducks which took turns patrolling up and down the canal from dawn to dusk.

A Dream by Edgar Allen Poe

A DREAM.

In visions of the dark night

I have dreamed of joy departed—

But a waking dream of life and light

Hath left me broken-hearted.

Ah! what is not a dream by day

To him whose eyes are cast

On things around him with a ray

Turned back upon the past?

That holy dream—that holy dream,

While all the world were chiding,

Hath cheered me as a lovely beam

A lonely spirit guiding.

What though that light, thro' storm and night,

So trembled from afar—

What could there be more purely bright

In Truth's day-star?

Caerphilly Castle / Castell Caerffili, the biggest castle in Wales, indeed the second largest in the United Kingdom after Windsor. Construction started in 1268 as a purely defensive work, the main body being completed in three years, but over the years it was turned into more of a palace.

By the 15th century it was just about in use, but survived more or less on a 'care and maintenance' basis. By the end of the century it had been pretty much abandoned, and was soon being robbed for its stone. Although the castle played little part in the Civil Wars (1644-1651), afterwards Cromwell wanted to remove the possibility of it being used as a defence against his forces and ordered it to be 'slighted', effectively demanding it be pulled down and renderered useless as a fortification. The result of an attempt to bring down the South-east tower by gunpowder can still be seen in the 'leaning tower', seen here on the right.

In the 18th century the castle came into the hands of the Marquesses of Bute, who did little with it until the fourth Marquess, who had made a fortune in coal and industry in South Wales, started what was essentially a job-creation scheme in 1928, trying to recreate as far as possible the structure as it would have been at the height of its power. Work continued until 1939, and some restarted after the war, the site being handed over to the government in 1950. It is now looked after by CADW.

A quick shot I took purely to ID this pretty plant that my mother had dug up from her garden & given to me. Well I totally forgot to look up what it was at the time & sadly the plant didn't survive. Just revisited the photo to clear space my iPhone & thought I'd run it through "Picture This" plant ID App.

Happy Gorgeous Green Thursday everyone! Photo 89/100 for the 100 Flowers 2020 group.

The Castle was founded in the 11th century by King Sancho Ramirez with a purely military function that lasted approximately 60 years.

Later, it had a religious use as a monastery until the disentailment of minister Mendizábal in the 19th century, being the 14th century its period of maximum splendor.

Throughout this entire period of occupation, a whole series of events have conditioned its development, military actions, fires, among others.

From the 19th century, after the confiscation, it passed into the hands of individuals with its consequent plundering, later reverting to the Spanish State.

The conservation and restoration work mat has been carried out over the last 40 years. (Source: Descriptive signs in the castle itself).

At the time of taking this photo (October, 2023) the castle is closed for restoration works.

This female belted kingfisher was quite acrobatic in hunting from the top of this tree stump. She often dove right to the water and after the catch flew from the water right back to the little perch on top.

I'm back in Sydney after four great days in the red centre visiting Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Alice Springs. This wasn't a purely photography focused trip however I did have secret hopes of photographing a sunset and a sunrise over both Uluru and Kata Tjuta. My previous post (www.flickr.com/photos/jaydaley/11301742023/) was my one and only sunrise morning at Uluru and thankfully I was able to get a shot.

My sunsets weren't as easy with the first evening being a flat clouded over day so with only one more sunset opportunity at Uluru left I was really hoping that my luck would change.

Things weren't looking good and I had already packed my tripod and camera back into the car before a fleeting moment of light broke through a small gap in the thick clouds on the horizon. I grabbed my gear and was able to get just one shot before the light had gone.

Providence Canyon State Outdoor Recreation Area is a 1,003-acre (405.90 ha) Georgia state park located in Stewart County in southwest Georgia, United States. The park contains Providence Canyon, which is sometimes called Georgia's "Little Grand Canyon". It is considered one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Georgia. It is also home to the very rare plumleaf azalea.

One of the quirkier attractions of the state park is an abandoned homestead including nearly a dozen rusty, 1950s-era cars and trucks. Due to the environmental damage that removing the vehicles would cause, park officials have decided to leave them alone.

Providence Canyon is not actually a purely natural feature: many of the massive gullies — the deepest of which is more than 150 feet (46 m) — are the result of erosion due to poor farming practices in the 19th century.

This story of the origin of the canyons has been commonplace since the 1940s, but the formations in the canyons are at least partially natural. Although there were probably a few early arrivals before 1825, the first heavy influx of settlers in Stewart County only came after the Treaty of Indian Springs (1825), by which the Creek Indians were forced to cede all their lands east of the Chattahoochee River. Evidence of the existence of the canyons at this time includes their mention in a deed by James S. Lunsford to William Tatam from 1836.

The park lies on marine sediments, usually loam or clay, with small areas of sand. Loamy sand topsoils overlie subsoils of sandy clay loam, sandy clay, or clay in most of the uneroded sections. Nankin, Cowarts, Mobila, and Orangeburg are the most prominent soil series. The canyons have significant exposure to clay, over which water often seeps. Water is mobile in this well-drained area.

Music Link: "New Space Music", Brian Eno - from his re-mixed, re-mastered album, "Neroli". This previously unreleased track, just over an hour long, is another gorgeous ambient piece that was added as an extra CD in the re-release. Sumptuously warm and comforting, perfect for meditation or preparing for sleep.

purely accidental. this sunset and whole landscape were bathed in yellow.

Posted purely to see if anyone out there can ID these fungi/mushrooms , the larger one is about 6 inches or 15 cms across .

Thank you !!

Found this spot purely by luck as I was wandering through the city. It's only a small delivery area, not visible from the main roads.

It was getting pretty dark, so I only managed to get one shot, but it's the one I'm happy with.

As always, thanks so much for looking and have a great day!

PLEASE NO GROUP INVITES as this is purely a Christmas greeting - thank you.

Isaiah 9: 6-7 King James Version

6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

7 Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

This is an old Nativity set that my wife inherited from her Italian grandparents.

This is a comparison of two identical images in terms of the object, angle of view and of post-processing (Raw Converter 3 and Luminar 4). Identical is also the film simulation (Classic Negative Film). What is different is that this image is the result of an in-camera HDR composition (HDR Plus). The other one is a straight forward still. Comparing the two, it seems to me that the HDR photo is a bit more luminescent. In other words, it achieves something that otherwise can be achieved only in post-processing. My guess is that in-camera HDR would be even more useful in strong horizontal light, best side-wise (morning, evening). This image was taken in a back-lit situation.

I stumbled on this location purely by accident. I'd just finished taking some underwhelming night pier photos in Port Melbourne. Out of time and heading home, I caught this view out my side window as I was driving down Park St, Melbourne. I parked the car in a side street and setup the tripod next to the car, taking a couple of long exposures. I'm glad I didn't spend much time taking the photos though. It was only when I was posting this photo that I realised that I was parked in Tope Street. I watched a documentary recently and there is an infamous brothel engaging in human trafficking, right about where the car taillights are.

Killer view, but I won't be visiting this street at night again!

*EXPLORED* - first one in ages..... I gave up trying to work Explore out a long time ago. I guess the fact that it is an algorithm based evaluation of quality and appeal helps to explain why, on a purely subjective level, I struggle to connect with many of the images which make it on there. Equally, many of the shots are really quite brilliant or wonderfully surreal and it's nice to be featured :)

It seems that *EXPLORE* is a bit like buses..... You wait for ages for one to come along, then you get 10 at the same time.

This one's purely for fun.

A challenge for you all, based on what little you know of me.

Mr P. your at a slight advantage, as you've met me, all be it a long time later lol!

The challenge is "which one is me?"

It's an image taken in my first year at school, note the B&W, a slight give away to my age.

I'm giving no clues, I await your humorous replies :)

No charge for guessing!

i’m purely intrigued by the world. the way human beings interact with one another. how different actions affect human beings in different ways, whether those reactions be positive or negative. everything surrounding us seems to be solely built around us. the way we live our lives and choose to think. and when someone doesn’t think by these same standards, they are an outsider. they are disliked by the majority of the ones around them. sometimes, i just wish that we could look around and see that we’re all just one in the same

i didn't have school today because it was the end of the 9 weeks. so i went to panera bread this morning with the people that i know will always have my back. then i went home and took some film and wrote a little bit and now i am here

When I started uploading photos on flickr nine years ago this was purely to share my photos with a limited group of family members and friends. Some of them encouraged me to go „public“, which in the first degree felt a little bit strange to me. Would there be any interest ? Would anyone take notice of what I did ? As a child in school I was told to be absolutely free of talent in anything having to do with arts, music or painting. My early beginnings in the flickr community seem to prove right the statements of my teachers decades ago but the humble results of the first years ended in better results at the end of 2013. it took about four years to reach 100.000 clicks, then results exploded. Today I am happy to celebrate 50 million clicks with a nice drink in a Dutch hotel. I do not write this to impress you. It is more to share two important messages and experiences.

1. Never believe in what others say about your talents, skills or traits. Only you know where your limits are.

2. Have patience and perform continuity and permanent courage even if results do not show up immediately. Success will come for sure
