A working reconstruction of the Turing-Welchman Bombe decoding machine from plans finally released by British Security some 40 years after the war.
This is the front panel showing the motor driven rotary switches that - when the machine stopped - revealed some settings of the Enigma machine and hence the route to decoding the message.
The original machine was essentially a simulator of multiple Enigma machines and was first used in August 1940. Over 200 were in operation at WW2 end. It was a development by Turing of the earlier Polish Bombe and was greatly increased in speed by an innovation of Gordon Welchman.
The machines were purely electro mechanical – rotary switches, relays, miles of cables. They ran on and on looking for a possible match between the code and a short plain text guess - part of a weather report phrase for example. If the machine stopped it indicated a likely success and with it some of the original Enigma machine settings. Further manual analysis was needed to finally get a decode.

Scarce spring & autumn passage migrant - occurs while moving from Siberia/Central Europe south to winter in Africa.
Though a distinctive wader, with a large body, smallish head, long neck and pointed, slightly decurved bill, individual Ruffs vary enormously in size and colour. Firstly males are approximately one third bigger than females (which are known as Reeves) - males being slightly larger than Redshank, while females are close to Dunlin-sized. Leg colour can be yellow, dull greenish yellow, orange or red. Bill can be all dark or show varying amounts of red or orange - often there is a white area of feathering around the base of the bill. Though males in full summer plumage are rarely seen in Ireland, this too is highly variable - the flamboyant ruff collar of chestnut red or black or even white is purely for display at the breeding ground. Occasionally, spring birds on passage may show a hint of these exotic colours, but the most usual plumage of birds seen here is of darkish brown wing and back feathers, each finely edged pale buff, creating a scaly effect, while the underparts are rather plain whitish, with a warm buff or creamy wash.
This upload is purely for cosmetic reasons - because the 1x1 shoot I uploaded looked dorky and I had to make amends ;) no groups just for looksies.
ENG: Recently I had time again for a stroll in the City West. So I was once again tempted to go to the KaDeWe (department store of the West). Honestly, my last visit is certainly 20 years ago. ☻ Price-wise, nothing has changed, as can be seen from the bottles of wine from the last post. Therefore, there is today something sweet from chocolate for the soul of me for you on the eye. Here, a bottle of wine alone has already cost from 120 euros. Purely architecturally, something has changed, as can be seen in the new escalator system. But more about that later.

The Gray Thrasher is the third purely endemic bird to Baja. Like other thrasher, it is frequently found on the ground where it searches out insects. The GT also favors scrubby areas where it will perch sometimes for the longest times. I found this bird to be very patient. The bird would simply sit and move only minimally as it might eventually look to one side or the other.

The heritage north façade of the former Latvian House building, which was designed by Robert Edwards and Frederick Saunders Architects in 1911. Originally a Freemasons' Hall. The Latvian House moved location about 1980. It was renovated few years ago, but I do not know how much of the interior structure survived. In Toronto sometimes only the façade survives major reno.

Liverpool City Council’s Eurovision Village at the Pier Head on the waterfront. Welcomed 250,000 visitors during the nine days it was open.
Cllr Harry Doyle, said: “The last two weeks have been a whirlwind of blue and yellow as we have welcomed people from across the world to celebrate with us on behalf of Ukraine. Anyone who got the chance to be in the city centre over the past few days knows how busy it was and the incredible buzz it generated. We always knew Liverpool would sparkle during Eurovision and now we just hope those people who came and were part of history come back again and bring their friends!"
Director of Culture Liverpool, Claire McColgan, said: “The logistics of staging an event of this scale and within this time period would have been impossible without the incredible support of our colleagues across the city council and our city partners. Everyone across the city and region stepped up and it was a true team effort. We are uniquely lucky to have a collection of experts in their field who handled everything we threw at them with professionalism, good grace and humour.”
Bill Addy, CEO of Liverpool BID Company, said: “The lasting memory of Eurovision in Liverpool will be one of joy. To see so many people enjoy the city has given it such a buzz and that’s the message we have had from our businesses. They’re telling us they have seen a real boost in people coming in and just wanting to enjoy the atmosphere. The private sector, through BID, made a six figure investment to help ensure the benefit of Eurovision would be felt throughout the city centre. We’ve spent a lot of time with our city centre businesses helping to prepare for this, from window dressing and artwork to karaoke displays and language classes, so it’s great to see it paying off. We know that the impact of Eurovision isn’t purely in the two weeks of celebrations, but for the 160m people watching at home and the projected economic impact of £250m over the next three years.”
Caerphilly Castle / Castell Caerffili, the biggest castle in Wales, indeed the second largest in the United Kingdom after Windsor. Construction started in 1268 as a purely defensive work, the main body being completed in three years, but over the years it was turned into more of a palace.
By the 15th century it was just about in use, but survived pretty much on a 'care and maintenance' basis. By the end of the century it had been more or less abandoned, and was soon being robbed for its stone. Although the castle played little part in the Civil Wars (1644-1651), afterwards Cromwell wanted to remove the possibility of it being used as a defence against his forces and ordered it to be 'slighted', effectively demanding it be pulled down and renderered useless as a fortification. The result of an attempt to bring down the South-east tower by gunpowder can still be seen in the 'leaning tower'.
In the 18th century the castle came into the hands of the Marquesses of Bute, who did little with it until the fourth Marquess, who had made a fortune in coal and industry in South Wales, started what was essentially a job-creation scheme in 1928, trying to recreate as far as possible the structure as it would have been at the height of its power. Work continued until 1939, and some restarted after the war, the site being handed over to the government in 1950. It is now looked after by CADW.

Miramar Palace, also known as Miramar Municipal Palace or Royal Palace, is an English-style palace located in the city of San Sebastián, Guipuzcoa, Spain. It was built in 1893 by José Goicoa, commissioned by the Spanish Royal Family, based on a project from 1889 by the English architect Ralph Selden Wornum. Located in front of La Concha Bay, it has one of the most spectacular views of the city.
Miramar Palace is purely English in style and has certain neo-Gothic decorative elements. Inside it has certain noble areas that remain faithful to their original configuration, such as the White Room, the Music Room, the Wooden Room, the Petit Room, the Library and the Royal Dining Room. The rest of the palace has been successively renovated since its purchase by the City Council, turning it into a more functional although somewhat distorted enclosure. The last works undertaken there, in 2001, were aimed at building classrooms for Musikene. The tower of the building was later restored in 2007.
In any case, the palace maintains its original external appearance and it is common to hold certain parties in its gardens and public areas, mainly those of the San Sebastian Film Festival.
Purely fictitious domestic conversation:-
He: Don't let the kids into my study darling, I brought home some classified stuff from the office!
She: Classified information? Oh God. BTW Sonny was playing with your iPhone this morning. He wanted to do what Siri said.
He: Don't worry, darling, I don't give my password to Sonny.
She: Don't need it, he held the phone up to your face and said "Smile, Daddy". You did and wondered how the picture turned out!😀

I discovered this beautiful bird purely coincidentally on a casual non-birding visit to Griffith Park. They have fascinating characteristics which I will share in ensuing posts.
Acorn Woodpeckers "are mostly black above with a red cap, creamy white face, and black patch around the bill. In flight, they show three patches of white: one in each wing and one on the rump. Females have less red on the crown than males."
Thank you very much for your views, faves and comments.

Purely by accident, while attempting to catch some winter weather pics(a rare thing during this very unusual midwest winter),the 3:30 UP train came through.I wasn't expecting it,was not prepared for it,and wasn't in a great place to capture it,but I tried my best. The UP mainline runs right through Sterling on its way east toward the UP Global 3 switching yard in Rochelle,IL.
I was tagged. And I'm tagging whoever wants to be tagged.
But instead of writing ten things about myself I'm going to show you a shit load of pictures.
