I was so fortunate to be able to capture this series of a Dragonfly eating a bug, something that most people will never see or even be aware of in their entire lifetimes.
The crops and enlargements are a tad grainy (noisy) and not as sharp as I would like, but these were shot under somewhat difficult conditions: it was partly cloudy with fast-moving clouds so the light conditions were constantly changing and I had to readjust my exposure for nearly every shot; the wind was blowing which was moving the twig the Dragon’s on, but if I used any higher ISO to attain a higher shutter speed these would have looked like crap---really noisy.
But one of the most difficult factors in getting a sharp shot, which rendered autofocus useless, is the fact that when Dragonflies eat they bob their little heads all around quite vigorously as they munch their food, twisting and turning their heads and bobbing them up and down as their jaws work vigorously, and viciously (I managed a shot with the Dragon’s fangs in action!), as they enjoy their meal.
If this was a larger Dragon I might have been able to get even better shots, but it’s a very small one, less than 2 inches long, which added to the challenge. All in all I’m fairly satisfied with the shots, and super excited to have seen this. I hope you enjoy looking too.

Looks like he's praying, doesn't it? I believe he was:
Take a look at what I wrote when I shot this photograph:
www.flickr.com/photos/motorpsiclist/6038118020/in/set-721...
Here's my description and "prayer:"
"At the end of summer, when one of these little fellow's lives will expire, I pray that he dies intact and beautiful on my lanai so that I may find him and perform a super-micro inside of the back of this fascinating head! It looks so freakish in there I want to see what's going on. :)"
Look at the date that I took and uploaded the photo: August 12.
Exactly one year later to the date (August 12, 2012) I went outside and found this Dragonfly who had died intact and beautiful lying on his back on my lanai!!! All six of his beautiful legs and feet were folded perfectly and symmetrically together underneath his chin...he was saying his prayers. And perhaps it was also a reference to the prayer I had made a year earlier...being granted.
Too anthropomorphic?
"For the fate of the sons of men and the fate of beasts is the same. As one dies so dies the other; indeed, they all have the same breath and there is no advantage for man over beast, for all is futility. All go to the same place. All came from the dust and all return to the dust. Who knows that the breath of man ascends upward and the breath of the beast descends downward to the earth?"

Kyoto, Japan - Kiyomizu Dera (Jishu Shrine)
Ōkuninushi and his brothers (eighty gods in total), were all suitors seeking the hand of Princess Yakami of Inaba in marriage. They were all travelling together from Izumo to court her.
Along the way, the brothers encounter a hare, flayed and raw-skinned, lying in agony upon a sea shore. The group asks what happened, and the hare explains that he came from the island of Oki across the sea. He thought of a clever way to accomplish this. He recruited the wanizame (sea dragons). He beckoned one wanizame, and challenged him to a contest to decide which of them had the greater number of kin, the hares or the wanizame. To settle the bet, he told the wanizame to line up in a straight row across the strait, so he could hop on them and count them. But before he had completely gotten ashore to safety, he gloated about having tricked them. The last wanizame in line grabbed him and tore off his fur.
Ōkuninushi’s brother gods thought this was hilarious, and as a cruel joke, instructed the hare to wash himself in the briny sea, and blow himself dry in the wind. At the end, the poor hare was in even more pain The hare then meets Ōkuninushi who was lagging behind his brothers because he had been forced to carry all of their luggage. The gentle-hearted god told the hare to go to the mouth of the river and wash himself in the fresh water, then gather cattail spikes that were growing all around and scatter the catkins on the ground and tumble around until he is covered by fleece. This cured the rabbit who then predicts that Ōkuninushi will be the one to marry Princess Yakami, and this is indeed what happened.

In late February 1864, Union prisoners began arriving at the Confederate prisoner of war camp, Camp Sumter, located in Andersonville, Georgia. Most entered by the Main Gate which has been rebuilt for the modern visitor to the prison site ans is visible in the left center of this photo. By June the prison population numbered over 20,000. The Confederate jailers decided that a larger prison was needed and started in the middle of June to enlarge the prison. The walls were that originally encompassed 10 acres were expanded to include 26.5 acres over the period of 14 days. Prisoners did the work. The prison designed to hold around 10,000 POWs held 33,000 by August.
The Stockade Branch of Sweetwater Creek was the source of drinking water as well as all water used by the prisoners. With the overcrowding it soon became polluted by human wastes and other pollutants. As a result Diarrhea and dysentery spread throughout the camp. These conditions along with other diseases and malnutrition resulted in a high mortality rate. Prayers were offered through out the camp by those who were suffering, According to eyewitness accounts passed down to relatives and written in journals, a group of prisoners decided they would pray to God for pure water and would not stop until their prayers were answered. The group prayed for hours. The result was what many men that were there saw as a miracle and a direct answer to prayer. On August 16,1864 witnesses report a deafening noise like thunder or an earthquake that shook the earth, At a spot where some of the men were kneeling, a freshwater spring burst out of the ground. That spot is marked by the stone house shown in the center right of the photo. Considering this phenomenon a providential act of God that was a direct answer to prayer, both prisoner and jailer called the spring and stream Providence Spring.
Some say it was a spring that had been buried during construction of the prison, others hold it was a new spring but regardless it was in the minds of many a direct answer to earnest prayer. Consider the testimony of S.E. Lookingbill of Company C 6th Maryland Vol., Inf., 2nd Brigade 3 Division, 6th Army Corps, Army of the Potomac, who was a eyewitness to the miracle: "There has been a great deal written about Providence Spring and what caused the water to come out of the earth at this place. I will state that I was there at the time God gave this spring to us, and this spring came through prayer for water.
The water furnished the stockade by the branch became so unfit from the filth on the outside and from the cook house and stables that there was a general cry for water from all over the camp and God heard the cries of his people and gave them Providence Spring. The Confederates at the time, and even to this day, call this Providence Spring, and say that God answered the soldiers' prayer for water."
The sudden appearance of the spring at the western wall of the stockade in the summer of 1864 was a treasured and sacred memory of many Union survivors of the prison. By the 1880s, visiting the site of the spring was an important Memorial Day tradition. Following the initial preservation of the prison site in the 1890s by the Grand Army of the Republic, the Woman's Relief Corps arranged for the Spring House (shown in the photo) to cover the site of the spring. The Providence Spring House was dedicated on Memorial Day, 1901. These are some of the inscriptions on the walls of The Spring House : "The Prisoners' cry of thirst rang up to Heaven; God heard, and with His thunder cleft the earth and poured his sweet water came rushing here." "God smote the hillside and gave them drink, August 16, 1864. These inscriptions reveal how the inmates felt about the spring and why it was such an important place to them even after the war.
Andersonville was designated a National Historic Site and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.

I wanted to take you more sharply and clearly inside a Dragonflies mouth than ever before.
Look at these fierce fangs! Isn’t that amazing? I did not know that Dragonflies have such wicked fangs in their mouths.
How did I get this shot? I literally had to perform a Dragonfly autopsy on a dead Dragonfly. He's lying on his back here. I very carefully pried his mouth open using a pair of tiny tweezers from my Swiss Army Knife and then as carefully as I could I pried the fangs (which I was astonished to discover) out as far as I could and then shot a super-micro of the whole affair.

The moment we arrived at the "pure water" temple it started to downpour. Just as we had hoped, since we could feel it in the air and all... It was perfect rain... warm rain... when we weren't walking around in it, we sat down next to our stuff, where this couple was sitting, asleep... waiting for the rain to let up. The old man behind them was also a joy, when myself, soaked in water from walking around in the storm, gave him a polite bow, and he smiled and bowed back.
My first attempt at high speed macro photography of water drops. These six photos are my representations of the primary and secondary colours, going from red through to purple. This image represents blue, I call it "Pure Water".
This is also my first photo on flickr to get 100 views.

Please view large...proud of this one. Still windy as hell, and I really had to ramp up the ISO and pull out all of my bag of tricks to get a halfway sharp shot, but this one's pretty good. :)

Yes, this beautiful and colorful little feller is alive...and yes, he knows I'm there: I don't have a micro lens (macro) so I, with my Rube Goldberg-cobbled together rig, am literally about an inch or less from his face while shooting this!!! He stayed rock still with that silly grin the whole time! I appreciate him, and I told him so.

I was incredibly lucky this year to receive the gift of another dead dragonfly, virtually intact! A friend of my wife's found this poor fellow in her driveway and saved it for me to photograph; very thoughtful.
From what appears to be burn marks on his eye it looks like this unfortunate little fellow may have run afoul of a bug zapper, perhaps?

Man! I just got bit by a Dragonfly!
It pinched...pricked pretty severely, actually...but did not break my skin or draw blood, but I damn sure knew I’d been bit! I’m astonished at how strong their jaws are: for such a little creature he damn sure clamped down hard! And I’m also amazed at how sharp their fangs are...like I say, I damn sure knew I’d been bit.
It was a very large dragonfly who got trapped in my garage and I was trying to help him get out. He was mad, bad, and dangerous to know and didn’t want my damn help! ROFL I finally got him and as he was furiously flapping his wings and squirming I gently grabbed him by his tail up near his body and he bent into a curved shape and bit the dog snot out of my finger. Unreal. I held onto him with him repeatedly biting me and tried to throw him up into the air outside but he would have none of it and dive-bombed me and proceeded back into my garage, where he decided he would not let me catch him or shoo him out again. We’ll see how this plays out, but due to the venomous spiders in my garage, it may not play out well and we may have another candidate for my Dragonfly Autopsy set.

I was hoping to find a dead Dragonfly which I could micro. My hope was rewarded in the form of a barely alive dragonfly I found on the road. It had obviously lost a battle with a car: most of the hair had been scraped off of its face, and it had almost entirely lost its upper lip…there was a large hole through which you could see into its mouth.
I tried my best to nurse it back to health…it loved to sit on my finger, so I would let it grasp my finger and I would bring it into my house and I would sit for a couple of hours watching TV and letting the dragonfly hold on.
I tried to feed it bugs and give it water, but to no avail. And it was so damaged that it had the will to fly, but it no longer could. It died after only a few days and I had ambivalent feelings: on the one hand I was sorrowful because of its death; on the other hand I was overjoyed to have one of these amazing creatures to be able to photograph up close and personal.
After I had made several micro photos of the little critter I had the overwhelming urge to look inside its mouth.
Feeling completely sacrilegious I gently pried open his lower jaw and took some photos, and imagine my shock when I saw the fangs in its mouth!
So then, feeling even more sacrilegious, I took some implements from one of my Swiss Army knives and pried his jaw open farther, and managed to flip the fangs up a little so that they were easier to photograph…no mean feat because everything in a Dragonfly’s mouth, including the mouth itself, is so ridiculously tiny.
But I succeeded and now we get to see what dragonfly fangs look like up close and personal.
The smallest things, I’m learning, are incredibly detailed and complex. It boggles the mind, and induces a reverential awe.
I hope you enjoy looking.
