Don't know if they're not tasty or just came off in the process of the struggle. I've seen other Dragonflies eat bugs wings and all, but as this bug was so large the Dragon really had to struggle with it, so the wings may have just popped off as a result.
Oh, the dramas of death that played out in my backyard.

High in the mountains, the water starts flowing, a result of melting snow and glaciers. Some of the purist water on earth flows in these places...and to see this is worth every effort.
The Val Morteratsch can be reached just a couple of minutes from Pontresina. The glacier was and is turning back but leaving a beautiful valley.

This was a WILD photograph for me to make!
I had cut some roses with the intention of making some micro shots with them and I brought them into my courtyard. I shot some weed flowers and when I reached for the roses a large Dragonfly flew out! He settled in an area of the courtyard where I could reach him, and I gingerly grabbed him, waited until he quit struggling, and then, while holding him in one hand and my camera in the other, I got this excellent micro!
And then I let him go. :)
(He's obviously upside down here...the only position I could get him to hold still in.)

Kiyomizu-dera (or Kiyomizudera; Japanese: 清水寺) refers to several Buddhist temples but most commonly to Otowa-san Kiyomizu-dera (音羽山清水寺) in Eastern Kyoto, one of the best known sights of the city. The temple dates back to 798, but the present buildings were constructed in 1633. The temple takes its name from the waterfall within the complex, which runs off the nearby hills. Kiyomizu (清水) literally means pure water, clear water or limpid water.
Kiyomizu (清水) letteralmente significa "acqua pura" "acqua pulita" o acqua limpida".

Commentary.
Expecting the white Chalk cliffs
and grey limestone, the dark flint
and inter-tidal sand and shingle,
it came as a pleasant surprise to see this
lush, verdant scene, just yards from Lulworth Cove.
A pure-water Chalk stream, lined by
water-irises, shrubs, flowers and trees.
This Jurassic Coast is an amazing place.
For all its superb features……
truly World Heritage!
This is an older shot from a couple of years ago but one that still astonishes me because this Dragonfly allowed me, fully aware (obviously) that I was there, to get literally within an inch of his face to make this micro shot. Unlike some of my shots made with my 300mm racked out and then cropped and enlarged this is a true micro that was made with a 50mm lens on a stack of extension tubes, camera on a tripod and leaned in to him, and quite literally with the lens almost touching him. He allowed me several shots, and this is the best one.

Addicted to dragonflies. :)
Near the city of Visby on the island of Gotland, Sweden. Enhanced. View large to see the sea gulls. Gotland is a beautiful island in the Baltic sea on the east side of Sweden. Just north of Gotland, separated by about 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) is an even more beautiful island called Fårö. On Fårö, there are some unusual rock formations called rauk.

Behind Kiyomizudera's main hall stands Jishu Shrine, a shrine dedicated to the deity of love and matchmaking. In front of the shrine are two stones, placed 18 meters apart. Successfully finding your way from one to the other with your eyes closed is said to bring luck in finding love. You can also have someone guide you from one stone to the other, but that is interpreted to mean that an intermediary will be needed in your love life as well.

Bear with me and my verbiage here...I believe my words are worth reading.
.
Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the Lord my soul to keep,
If I shall die before I wake,
I pray the Lord my soul to take. Amen.
.
Looks like he's praying, doesn't it? I believe he was:
Take a look at what I wrote when I shot this photograph:
www.flickr.com/photos/motorpsiclist/6038118020/in/set-721...
Here's my description and "prayer:"
"At the end of summer, when one of these little fellow's lives will expire, I pray that he dies intact and beautiful on my lanai so that I may find him and perform a super-micro inside of the back of this fascinating head! It looks so freakish in there I want to see what's going on. :)"
Look at the date that I took and uploaded the photo: August 12.
Exactly one year later to the date (August 12, 2012) I went outside and found this Dragonfly who had died intact and beautiful lying on his back on my lanai!!! All six of his beautiful legs and feet were folded perfectly and symmetrically together underneath his chin...he was saying his prayers. And perhaps it was also a reference to the prayer I had made a year earlier...being granted.
Too anthropomorphic?
"For the fate of the sons of men and the fate of beasts is the same. As one dies so dies the other; indeed, they all have the same breath and there is no advantage for man over beast, for all is futility. All go to the same place. All came from the dust and all return to the dust. Who knows that the breath of man ascends upward and the breath of the beast descends downward to the earth?"
Ecclesiastes 3:19-21

At the base of the Kiyomizudera's ("Pure Water Temple") main hall is the Otowa Waterfall, whose pure water gives the name to the temple. The waterfall’s waters are divided into three separate streams, and visitors use cups attached to long poles to drink from them. Each stream's water is said to have a different benefit. From the drinker’s viewpoint, the one to the left is good for wisdom, the middle one for longevity and the one to the right for a fortunate love life. However, drinking from all three streams is considered greedy.

" The pure water of life is welling up, why wear away your days in a desert of thirst?"
Abdu'l-Baha (Secret of Divine Civilization, p.109)
Ya gotta view this large...please!
And here's a little story to go with it...while sitting there, before I ran inside to get my Nikon, this dragonfly landed in the most perfect pose ever on one of my most beautiful roses ever, which happened to be in full bloom. He sat there while I ran inside. He sat there as I looked out my window to see if he was still there. Came out...gone...
Now, stupid me, I had my little pocket camera with me in the pocket of my shorts!!! I could have whipped it out (You know what they say: "When in doubt, whip it out!" Oh; wait...maybe that refers to something else.) and got the shot of the year for myself. Sigh.
Anyway, he (she?) was still obliging enough that I'll have some more good pics to share, and who knows...maybe it'll return to the rose and I'll have presence of mind enough to use the camera I have on me! :-D

Kiyomizudera Temple (清水寺)
Kiyomizudera ("Pure Water Temple") is one of the most celebrated temples of Japan. It was founded in 780 on the site of the Otowa Waterfall in the wooded hills east of Kyoto, and derives its name from the fall's pure waters. The temple was originally associated with the Hosso sect, one of the oldest schools within Japanese Buddhism, but formed its own Kita Hosso sect in 1965. In 1994, the temple was added to the list of UNESCO world heritage sites.
Kiyomizudera is best known for its wooden stage that juts out from its main hall, 13 meters above the hillside below. The stage affords visitors a nice view of the numerous cherry and maple trees below that erupt in a sea of color in spring and fall, as well as of the city of Kyoto in the distance. The main hall, which together with the stage was built without the use of nails, houses the temple's primary object of worship, a small statue of the eleven faced, thousand armed Kannon.
