Puppet Beck, introducing the real beck

Each puppet requires three highly skilled people to operate. The result is a figure that moves like a human.

Puppets on display at the Museum, Summer 04

Very much a popular fiction by a popular author, this book, written in the late 60’s cannot fail to infuriate any clear thinking reader, with its inconsistent plot, childish contrivances, and a male chauvinistic protagonist.

[SPOILER ALERT]

Sherman, an Interpol officer, enters Amsterdam hot on the trails of a drug supplier. He is accompanied by Maggie and Belinda, two female Interpol officers, whose main criteria of selection for the job seem to be ravishing good looks, and the ability to put up with Sherman’s constant sneering.

Maclean’s Amsterdam is peopled only by crooks and very very beautiful young women. The crooks, in spite of innumerable opportunities to do so, never ever actually shoot Sherman in the head and end it. No. They try to drown him, then they try to burn him, and on one occasion they even try to kill him by making him wear headphones playing amplified sound of antique clocks. The reader is not really surprised that Sherman survives all these elaborate attempts even after stumbling into each and every trap laid out for him.

Near the end, Maggie, the semi-intelligent female dies at the hands of pitchfork yielding hay dancers, and Belinda, the completely stupid one, agrees to marry Sherman without even receiving a formal proposal.

All in all a thorough waste of time. Anyone looking for light entertainment would be well advised to steer clear of this book, and stick to Agatha Christie’s novels instead.

I bought this creepy puppet at an estate sale last year for $3. And I can't remember where I bought Jessie. I might have gotten her at a flea market in Berkley last year. It was love at first sight for the two of them, and have they been inseparable. I did a photo shoot with them awhile back, and am just now uploading the photos.

I love this photo because it looks like a tourist shot.

The puppet was made by Bruce Rowland and dressed by me. The head was made from fibreglass and the hands, feet and legs carved from wood. The helmet, shield and lance were made on a 3D printer.

OMG an autofocus lens.

You've seen this picture before, but different. I've been testing the editing on my iMac and really liked what i done with this, he looks like a puppet therefore the name...

Read a blog post about making my giant puppet for last year's Beltane.

Judging by this photo, the puppet's about 10' 8" from its feet to the tip of its horns (of which the antlers account for about 2 feet). Between us we're about 12'7" tall; I'm 6'1" on my own, if I remember right - might be closer to 6'2", in which case all these heights should be adjusted upward a little.

Cepot is the name used in Sundanese (West Java - Indonesia), this puppet’s birthplace. Bagong is the more common name in the rest of Java. Originating in the Javanese culture, Cepot / Bagong, clown and servant, has been added to the great Hindu epics, including the Mahabharata.

According to Javanese legend, when the God Ismaya was ordered to go down to earth and become Semar, the guardian of the Knight, the great royal warrior class in Hinduism, Ismaya complained that he would be lonely and needed a friend. The gods caustically replied that he could have his shadow as a friend. When he reached the earth, Semar’s shadow transformed itself into a human form and took the name of Cepot or Bagong.

Almost identical in appearance to Semar, Cepot became one of the panakawan, clown-servants to the Knight. Noted for his impish, sassy jokes and ability to mimic others, using a loud, self-important voice, Cepot and his family of clowns add comic relief to the drama of the ancient Hindu stories. Outwardly stupid, the panakawan in reality are the common sense advisors of the more lofty knights and mask their wisdom with clumsy, lower-class behavior.
