Our Independence Day was on the 17th of June. This girl was playing a puppet outside one of Reykjavík´s most popular bar.
“I was watching a soap opera and all of a sudden an earthquake took place,” says Natcharin, a 13-year old girl who lives in Chiang Saen, northern Thailand. “My mum and I hid under the table and bed. If there is a disaster, people in our community will be in trouble."
Natcharin recently attended a 2-day workshop with 29 other children from 4 villages to create characters and stories to use for a shadow puppet show all about disasters.
“In our story, we want to talk about how it isn’t good to ignore flood warnings. I’ll use my knowledge to perform for adults and children so that they know how dangerous disasters can be”.
Shadow puppetry is an effective way for vulnerable children and communities to learn about disaster risk reduction using easy, fun and engaging media. In partnership with Plan Thailand, the organisation Wondering Moon uses shadow theatre to tell stories of disasters.
Cepot is the name used in Sundanese (West Java - Indonesia), this puppet’s birthplace. Bagong is the more common name in the rest of Java. Originating in the Javanese culture, Cepot / Bagong, clown and servant, has been added to the great Hindu epics, including the Mahabharata.
According to Javanese legend, when the God Ismaya was ordered to go down to earth and become Semar, the guardian of the Knight, the great royal warrior class in Hinduism, Ismaya complained that he would be lonely and needed a friend. The gods caustically replied that he could have his shadow as a friend. When he reached the earth, Semar’s shadow transformed itself into a human form and took the name of Cepot or Bagong.
Almost identical in appearance to Semar, Cepot became one of the panakawan, clown-servants to the Knight. Noted for his impish, sassy jokes and ability to mimic others, using a loud, self-important voice, Cepot and his family of clowns add comic relief to the drama of the ancient Hindu stories. Outwardly stupid, the panakawan in reality are the common sense advisors of the more lofty knights and mask their wisdom with clumsy, lower-class behavior.

Articulating puppet character head for upcoming stop motion animation movie that we designed and produced. The head is only 40mm (1-3/4") from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head. Therefore it was a challenge to insert so many mechanisms in such small space.

i particularly love the world-weary expression he has on his face....and the fact that he's sat next to a pile of travel books, one for vietnam, as if he's thinking 'and for my next trick!'
