Donna Nook Grey Seal Colony
For much of the year grey seals at the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trusts’ Donna Nook National Nature Reserve are at sea or hauled out on distant sandbanks. Every November and December, the seals give birth to their pups near the sand dunes: a wildlife spectacle which attracts visitors from across the UK.
With over 1300 pups born annually and tens of thousands of visitors, management is required and this is achieved thanks to the fantastic support of a team of volunteer wardens and the staff of RAF Donna Nook.

The Viewing Area
The viewing area at the foot of the sand dunes reduces disturbance to the seals and ensures the safety of visitors.
Seals are large predators and are very powerful. They can move surprisingly quickly and, having teeth similar to a dog, can inflict a nasty bite – including the pups. Mothers with pups can be very protective and big bulls can be aggressive. A mother seal may abandon her pup if it smells of humans or dogs.
Visitor Guidelines
For your own safety and to reduce disturbance to the seals, please follow these guidelines:
•Stay within the viewing area behind the fence.
•Strictly observe all red flag and other bombing range warnings.
•Don't get too close to the seals.
•Never feed or pet the seals.
•No unaccompanied children.
•No dogs.
•Please be considerate when visiting: park only in designated areas.
•If possible, visit during the week. At weekends, the narrow lanes and car park get very congested.

Facilities
•There is a small car park at Stonebridge (maintained by the local authority). A private operator provides an overflow parking area.
•There are no public toilets in the car park. The nearest public toilets are in North Somercotes village.
•No parking overnight.
•Catering van (private) operates through the season selling hot drinks and food.
•Places to eat and stay are available in North Somercotes and the local area. See the village website and Lincolnshire Tourism for further information.
Photography at Donna Nook
It is possible to get wonderful photographs from the viewing area. From this location the full spectacle can be witnessed from cute seal pups and interactions between mother and pup to the powerful and brutal fights between the males.
When taking wildlife photographs it is important to remember:
•The welfare of the subject is more important than the photograph.
•Photography should not be undertaken if it puts the subject at risk from disturbance, physical damage, and lessened reproductive success, or if it causes the subject anxiety.

Found at San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area. Cochise County, Arizona, USA.
Cast pupal skin. I think this is from the asilid Triorla interrupta. Adults of that species were prevalent at this site.

Female Harbor Seals depend on ice chunks from tidwater glaciers in Southeast Alaska to have their pups between May and July. This seal looked like she was in labor as our Cruise ship passed by the Dawes Glacier in Southeast Alaska.
reminds me of my pup at the moment, always got sthg in his mouth,,,,,his tail, my hand, wash ball.....just mouthing everything.

There were six pups in this litter! They were so much fun to watch that it was hard to know where to point to camera! The best part of this sighting was that we were the only vehicle there watching the pups! This photo was taken in the Masai Mara, Kenya!

A lone wolf pup looks around the tundra near it's den, in Denali National Park. There were four siblings nearby and an adult that came to the den after this photo was taken. This photo was taken back in 2008, I wonder if this wolf is still alive? When this photo was taken, there was a ten mile buffer zone around the park where trapping and hunting was illegal. Under the Murkowski administration, the buffer zone was cut to five miles. Now, there is no buffer zone, many of the Park's wolves are killed when the wander out of the park. The majority of Alaskans oppose this but the Alaska Board of Shame (Game) refuse to reinstall the buffer zone. It is a sad situation for the wolves of Alaska, they are being slaughtered in the name of game management. The State has sponsored areal shooting of wolves, denning, the practice of killing wolves and pups in their dens, and trapping of wolves. The photographer was told by one hunter, "if every wolf was killed in Alaska, it wouldn't bother me at all." Well, it bother's the photographer a great deal.
we recently had a(totally unintended) litter of collie/paterdale terrior pups. The last one was sold on sunday, I will miss their mischevous antics around the farm

Galapagos Sea Lions leave their pups in creches while they go to feed. This little fellow seemed very happy playing on his own.
