One of the big goals of the Japan trip was to photograph the Hakubi Line between Yonago and Okayama. At this time the line was nearly a pure JNR time capsule with the limited stop trains operating with Clas 381 tilting trains from the 1970s and freights behind EF64s. The 381s were running out their last days before replacement, and to bid farewell JR West had painted several sets in retro liveries. The big prize was the fully JNR painted set 381-500. Here the classy looking crosses the Takahashi River at Bitchū-Kawamo on the way towards Yonago. Thankfully Japanese trains are extremely punctual so I didnt have to wait too long standing in the freezing river.
I have read recently that JR West has sadly sent all the remaining 381s to scrap in 2025. The Japanese love their trains, but unlike in Europe, when its done, its done.
The London, Chatham and Dover Railway (LCDR or LC&DR) was a railway company in south-eastern England created on 1 August 1859, when the East Kent Railway was given parliamentary approval to change its name. Its lines ran through London and northern and eastern Kent to form a significant part of the Greater London commuter network. The company existed until 31 December 1922 when its assets were merged with those of other companies to form the Southern Railway as a result of the grouping determined by the Railways Act 1921. The railway was always in a difficult financial situation and went bankrupt in 1867, but was able to continue to operate. Many of the difficulties were caused by the severe competition and duplication of services with the South Eastern Railway (SER). However, in 1898 the LCDR agreed with the SER to share the operation of the two railways, work them as a single system (as the South Eastern and Chatham Railway) and pool receipts: but it was not a full amalgamation. The SER and LCDR remained separate companies with separate shareholders until both becoming constituents of the Southern Railway on 1 January 1923.
'The Chatham', as it was sometimes known, was often criticised for its lamentable carriage stock and poor punctuality, but in two respects it was very good: it used the highly effective Westinghouse air brake on its passenger stock, and the Sykes 'Lock and Block' system of signalling. As a result, it had an excellent safety record.
After two hours of waiting I hear a gentle rustling of dry leaves and then here she comes out of the woods.
The scene will repeat itself punctually for several evenings.

Mignon (Kennst du das Land, wo die Zitronen blühn?) ist der Titel eines Gedichts von Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, das zuerst in Wilhelm Meisters theatralischer Sendung und später in den Lehrjahren gedruckt wurde. Es gehört zu den berühmtesten Gedichten deutscher Sprache und besingt die unter Deutschen verbreitete Italiensehnsucht (Quelle Wikipedia).
Jene hier angesprochen Sehnsucht vieler Deutscher, das wunderschöne Land südlich des Brenners zu bereisen, hat auch mich seit vielen Jahren erfasst. Nicht nur Land und Leute, Flora und Fauna oder Pizza und Pasta strahlen eine beinahe unwiderstehliche Anziehungskraft auf viele Reisende aus, nein, es ist auch der „sanfte Wind [der] vom blauen Himmel weht“, ein Himmel, der am Horizont in das azurblaue Mittelmeer übergeht.
Und hier schließt sich der Kreis zur Eisenbahnfotografie – in den meisten Jahren habe ich die Kamera selten eingepackt, gab es doch genug andere Dinge zu bestaunen, als sich auch im Urlaub für Züge auf die Lauer zu legen. Das hielt so lange an, bis ich eines Tages ein Bild des ÖBB NightJets aus La Spezia nach Wien entdeckte, als er den Ort Manarola erreichte. Von nun an war für mich klar, dass dieser Ort in Ligurien, einer der sogenannten Cinque Terre, alsbald besucht werden musste. Im Gegensatz zum Herkunftsland von Goethes funktioniert der Bahnverkehr in Italien reibungslos, die Züge fahren pünktlich, sie sind klimatisiert und Reisen mit der Bahn sind mehr als preiswert. Es empfiehlt sich in Ligurien das Auto nahe der Unterkunft stehen zu lassen und fortan die Dienste der Trenitalia zu nutzen. Angekommen in Manarola gilt es sich zuallererst zu orientieren, denn der Bahnsteig ist stark frequentiert, die Temperaturen heiß, das Stimmengewirr laut. Durch einen Tunnel gelangt man vom Bahnhof in knapp zehn Minuten in den Ort, der aufgrund seiner Bekanntheit als Teil der Cinque Terre in den Sommermonaten von Touristen überrannt wird. Das faszinierende an den Cinque Terre ist ihre beeindruckende Hanglage, es geht aus dem Meer unmittelbar steil bergan und so muss auch der Eisenbahnfotograf Meter um Metter empor, eine kleine Abzweigung im Ort nicht verpassen, um durch ein verwinkeltes Gassengeflecht oberhalb des Ortes eine kleine Aussichtsplattform am Ende der Via Belvedere zu erreichen. Der Ausblick ist sagenhaft, es eröffnet sich ein 360-Grad Panorama mit Blick auf den Bahnhof und das schier unendliche blaue Meer. Allerdings sollte eines zwingend beachtet werden, der Fotostandort bietet keinen Schatten, das heißt, man steht im August in der prallen Sonne bei sommerlichen Temperaturen von deutlich über 37 Grad. Die einzige Möglichkeit, dies über eine längere Zeit unversehrt zu überstehen, ist es, auf dem Boden vor einer kleinen Mauer Schatten zu suchen. Dies bedeutet allerdings, dass man die Gleise und womöglich auch herannahende Züge nicht im Blick hat. Aber auch für diesen Fall bietet jener einzigartige Fotospot Abhilfe: die italienische Staatsbahn verkündet über die Lautsprecheranlage am Bahnsteig jeden ankommenden und vor allem jeden durchfahrenden Zug. Aufgrund der guten Akustik ist die Ansage bis hinauf gut zu hören und so wagte ich mich aus dem Schatten als folgende Durchsage erklang: "Attenzione treno in transito al binario due allontanarsi dalla linea gialla!"
Ein durchfahrender Zug auf Gleis zwei bedeutet zwangsläufig, dass kein Regionalzug, sondern ein Zug des Fernverkehrs, oder ein Güterzug den Bahnhof La Spezia Centrale verlassen hat und sich entlang der ligurischen Küste auf den Weg nach Genova (dt. Genua) gemacht hat.
Im vorliegenden Bild passiert ein „Frecciargento“ (dt. Silberpfeil) der Baureihe ETR 485 (ElettroTreno Rapido 485) als FB 8616 aus Roma Termini nach Genova Piazza Principe den Bahnhof von Manarola.

“Mignon” (Do you know the land where the lemons bloom?) is the title of a poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, first published in Wilhelm Meister's Theatrical Mission and later in The Apprenticeship of Wilhelm Meister. It is one of the most famous poems in the German language, expressing the common German longing for Italy (Source: Wikipedia).
This longing for Italy, the beautiful land south of the Brenner Pass, has also captured me for many years. It’s not just the land and people, the flora and fauna, or the pizza and pasta that exert an almost irresistible pull on many travelers. No, it is also the "gentle breeze [that] blows from the blue sky," a sky that merges into the azure Mediterranean Sea at the horizon.
This brings me back to railway photography – for many years, I rarely packed my camera, as there were always so many other things to marvel at, and it seemed almost unnecessary to focus on trains even during a holiday. That was until one day, when I discovered a photo of the ÖBB NightJet from La Spezia to Vienna as it passed through the village of Manarola. From that moment, it was clear to me that this place in Liguria, one of the so-called Cinque Terre, had to be visited soon.
Unlike in Goethe's home country, Italy’s railway system operates smoothly: the trains are punctual, air-conditioned, and traveling by train is remarkably affordable. In Liguria, it's advisable to leave the car near your accommodation and instead take advantage of Trenitalia’s services. Upon arrival in Manarola, the first task is to orient yourself, as the platform is heavily trafficked, the temperatures are high, and the noise of voices is loud. A tunnel leads from the station to the village in about ten minutes. During the summer months, the place is overrun by tourists, as it is part of the famous Cinque Terre.
What is fascinating about the Cinque Terre is their impressive cliffside location. From the sea, the land rises steeply, so the railway photographer must climb meters and meters, never missing a small detour in the town, to reach a winding maze of alleys above the town. Here, a small viewpoint at the end of Via Belvedere awaits. The view is breathtaking, offering a 360-degree panorama with views of the station and the seemingly endless blue sea.
However, one thing should be kept in mind: the photo spot offers no shade, meaning that in August, you stand in the blazing sun, with summer temperatures well over 37°C. The only way to endure this for a longer period without harm is to seek shade on the ground in front of a small wall. However, this means you may not have a clear view of the tracks, or any approaching trains. But even in this case, this unique photo spot provides a solution: the Italian State Railways announce every arriving and passing train over the loudspeakers at the station. Thanks to the excellent acoustics, the announcement can be clearly heard even up here, and so I ventured out of the shade when the following announcement echoed: "Attenzione, treno in transito al binario due. Allontanarsi dalla linea gialla!"
A passing train on track two inevitably means that no regional train, but a long-distance or freight train has left the station La Spezia Centrale and is heading along the Ligurian coast towards Genoa (Genova in Italian).

Am 23. August 2024 ließ ich mich zu einem Ausflug ins Ostallgäu überreden. Ziel sollte sein, die orientrote 218 406 vor dem IC-Zugpaar 2084/85 zu fotografieren. Im Nachhinein bin ich sehr froh, die Tour unternommen zu haben, konnte dadurch doch unwissentlich eine der letzten Fahrten des "Nebelhorns" auf der Allgäubahn dokumentiert werden. Wenige Tage später verkehrte die Verbindung zum letzen Mal. Es trat beim Stellwerk in Oberstdorf ein gravierender Schaden auf, die Weichen zu den Abstellgleisen mit der Zugvorheiz-Anlage können nicht mehr angesteuert werden. Die Reparatur scheint so aufwändig zu sein, dass man lieber gleich das Fernzug-Angebot eingestellt und für 2025 gar nicht erst bestellt hat. Alternative Möglichkeiten zur Abstellung und zur Zugbehandlung gibt es im Allgäu ebenfalls keine mehr. Was wie ein Schildbürgerstreich klingt, ist leider symptomatisch für den Zustand der Deutschen Bahn. Am besagten 23. August 2024 kam die mustergültig in den Zustand der frühen Epoche V zurück versetzte 218 406 mit ihrem IC 2084 nach Hamburg Altona fast pünktlich die Günzacher Steige hinauf gefahren und konnte von mir bei Mittelberg aufgenommen werden. Die zwei Kühe ließen sich von der Durchfahrt des Zuges nicht irritieren - als hätten sie es geahnt, dass sie künftig beim Grasen ohnehin nur noch von Triebwagen der Baureihen 612 und 633 und mit viel Glück (aus Sicht eines Eisenbahnfreundes) durch einen Güterzug gestört würden.
On 23 August 2024, I was convinced to take a trip to the Ostallgäu. The aim was to photograph the Orient red 218 406 in front of the IC train pair 2084/85. In retrospect, I am very glad that I undertook the trip, as it enabled me to unknowingly document one of the last journeys of the ‘Nebelhorn’ on the Allgäu railway. A few days later, the train ran for the last time. There was serious damage to the control centre in Oberstdorf and the switchyard sidings to the tracks with the train pre-heating system could no longer be controlled. The repair seems to be so costly that the long-distance train service has been cancelled and not even ordered for 2025. There are also no alternative options for heating and train handling in the Allgäu region. What sounds like a prank is unfortunately symptomatic of the state of Deutsche Bahn. On 23 August 2024, 218 406, which had been perfectly restored to the condition of early Era V, drove up the Günzacher Steige almost punctually with its IC 2084 to Hamburg Altona and I was able to take a picture of it near Mittelberg. The two cows were unperturbed by the train's passage - as if they had guessed that in future they would only be disturbed while grazing by class 612 and 633 railcars and, with a lot of luck (from a railway enthusiast's point of view), by a freight train.
Sinds september 2024 is het laadpunt van de fraaie zandtreinen naar de glasfabriek in Limmared verhuisd naar Falkenberg. Daardoor loopt de gehele route nu onder de draad. Het maakte wel nog enkele plaatjes op het oude tracé in Varberg mogelijk, wat inmiddels opgebroken is nu de dubbelsporige tunnel is geopend. Op 25 april passeert T43 231 met de vrijwel altijd pünktliche zandtrein bij Apelviken, even voor Varberg.
Since September 2024, the sand trains to the glass factory in Limmared are loaded in Falkenberg instead of Halmstad. As a result, the complete trip takes place under overhead wires. It did allow for a few pictures along the old line in Varberg, which is replaced by a tunnel by now. On April 25th, T43 231 hauls the almost always punctual sand train near Apelviken, shortly before Varberg.

Once you’ve listened, it’s time to act accordingly. If there was anything about the persons tone of voice or body language that gave a hint as to how they were feeling, use that information in your interaction.

By keeping your word to someone, you not only establish yourself as a person of integrity, but make the other person feel as though you value them.
4. (Be on time)
Another way to demonstrate that you value someone, is by treating their time as though it is valuable. Nothing says this better than being punctual. If you have a problem with being chronically late, read my post Always Late? Let’s fix it.
5. (Have manners)
This is pretty simple. Do not interrupt a conversation, be polite and watch your ‘please’ and ‘thank you’. By showing manners towards someone, you make them feel valuable.
6. (Encourage)
Sometimes when we hear a silly idea, it’s easy to shoot down someone’s hopes and dreams, or otherwise make them feel unimportant. Genuinely encouraging someone could be very empowering and liberating.

Der Neue Zollhof des US-amerikanischen Architekten Frank O. Gehry steht für den Strukturwandel des Düsseldorfer Hafens. Pünktlich zur Jahrtausendwende ergänzte das expressive Gebäudeensemble die Liste der Düsseldorfer Wahrzeichen.
Gehry schuf drei skulpturale, organisch geformte Bauten, die sich keiner Geometrie unterwerfen und zudem in Materialität, Höhe und Formensprache unterscheiden. Besonders kontrastreich sind die drei Fassaden: Klinker trifft hier auf Edelstahl und strahlend weißen Putz. Doch nicht nur Architekturfreunde kommen am Neuen Zollhof auf ihre Kosten: Zwei Restaurants im Erdgeschoss der Gehry-Bauten, die Meerbar und das Rocca 800 °C, locken auch Feinschmecker an.
The new customs yard by the American architect Frank O. Gehry represents the structural change in the port of Düsseldorf. Punctually at the turn of the millennium, the expressive building ensemble added to the list of Düsseldorf landmarks.
Gehry created three sculptural, organically shaped buildings that are not subject to any geometry and also differ in materiality, height and design language. The three facades are particularly rich in contrast: clinker meets stainless steel and bright white plaster. But not only fans of architecture get their money's worth at the Neuer Zollhof: two restaurants on the ground floor of the Gehry buildings, the Meerbar and the Rocca 800 °C, also attract gourmets.

Sobre su autoría, para ciertos entendidos y atendiendo a los escasos y diferentes estudios, esta obra podría haber salido de la gubia de José de Arce en el año 1669.
Tallada en madera de cedro policromada, que mide un metro setenta, y cinco centimetros, representando a Cristo muerto crucificado momentos después de la expiración.
Esta es una talla esbelta, nítidamente barroca, perfectamente armonizada, aunque de fuertes miembros proporcionados. Su aspecto dramático se identifica por el movimiento de laxitud del cuerpo sin vida, que cae de manera sobrecogedora de los clavos que lo sujetan a la Cruz, como se puede observar por la tensión de sus brazos y su posición colgante y encorvada. Sin embargo, muestra un rostro dulcificado que produce un extraordinario impacto devocional y que siempre llama a su contemplación. Dicho por los expertos, esta escultura es de los mejores que se han tallado en la ciudad.
El momento de la fotografía es procesionando sobre el Puente de San Bernardo, o también llamado Puente de los Bomberos (Ver foto anterior). Durante este tramo de recorrido se apaga toda la iluminación urbana y el Cristo se ilumina puntualmente con un foco instalado sobre una enorme grua del Parque de Bomberos (junto al puente) Esto y el silencio de la multitud, solo roto por el caminar de los costaleros bajo la canasta del Cristo, hacen de estos momentos algo único y con una fuerte carga de emoción y sentimientos, por lo menos para los sevillanos.

Holy Week in Seville. In the photograph, the expected moment of the previous image, the procession of the Santïsimo Cristo de la Salud (Brotherhood of San Bernardo) processioning by the Firefighters bridge.
Regarding its authorship, for certain experts and taking into account the few and different studies, this work could have come from the gouge of José de Arce in the year 1669.
Carved in polychrome cedar wood, measuring one meter seventy and five centimeters, representing the dead Christ crucified moments after expiration. This is a slender carving, clearly baroque, perfectly harmonized, although with strong proportioned limbs. Its dramatic appearance is identified by the lax movement of the lifeless body, which falls in an overwhelming way from the nails that hold it to the Cross, as can be seen by the tension of its arms and its hanging and hunched position. However, he shows a sweetened face that produces an extraordinary devotional impact and that always calls for contemplation of him. Said by experts, this sculpture is one of the best that has been carved in the city.
The moment of the photograph is procession over the San Bernardo Bridge, or also called the Firefighters Bridge (See previous photo). During this section of the route, all the urban lighting is turned off and the Christ is illuminated punctually with a spotlight installed on a huge crane in the Fire Station (next to the bridge). This and the silence of the crowd, only broken by the walking of the costaleros under the basket of Christ, make these moments something unique and with a strong charge of emotion and feelings, at least for the Sevillians.

Viñátigo; Se trata de un árbol robusto, endémico de los archipiélagos de la Macaronesia (Azores, Madeira, Cabo verde, Islas Salvajes y Canarias). Es una de las especies típicas de los bosques de laurisilva. En Canarias lo encontramos en todas las islas, excepto en Lanzarote y Fuerteventura, y en la Gomera ha sido elegido símbolo vegetal de la isla. Está incluido dentro del catálogo de especies protegidas de Canarias.
El viñátigo necesita suelos profundos, húmedos y con aguas subterráneas permanentes, así que es común que se desarrolle en los valles más húmedos dentro de los bosques de laurisilva.
Por el contrario, si salimos de la zona de monteverde solo se le observa de manera puntual en cuencas de barrancos por donde pasan constantes corrientes de agua. La altitud adecuada para que se dé esta especie de laurácea es a partir de los 500 m y hasta los 900 m sobre el nivel del mar.
Conocido como carisco, cárisco o viñático, es un árbol de gran tamaño, 20 m de altura media aunque puede llegar a alcanzar los 30m. Su tronco es recto y fuerte y está cubierto por una corteza gris bastante oscuro y agrietada. La copa es grande y densa, en cuanto a ramificaciones posee unas hojas más largas que anchas con forma de lanza, y pueden llegar a medir 20 cm de largo, aunque el tamaño medio es de 15 cm. Cuando van envejeciendo el color de las hojas cambia a naranja rojizo y se mantienen en el árbol por un tiempo. Las flores son de color blanco y forman grupos en los finales de las ramas. El fruto es una baya de color negro, más brillante cuando madura, de aproximadamente 2 cm, y es uno de los alimentos preferidos de las palomas rabiche y turqué.
La madera del viñátigo es muy apreciada en construcción y ebanistería.
Viñátigo; It is a robust tree, endemic to the archipelagos of Macaronesia (Azores, Madeira, Cape Verde, Wild Islands and Canary Islands). It is one of the typical species of laurisilva forests. In the Canary Islands we find it in all the islands, except in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, and in the Gomera has been chosen vegetal symbol of the island. It is included within the catalogs of protected species of the Canary Islands.
Viñátigo needs deep, humid soils and permanent groundwater, so it is common to develop in the wettest valleys within the laurisilva forests.
On the other hand, if we leave the area of Monteverde is only observed punctually in basins of ravines where constant water flows. The appropriate altitude for this species of laurácea is from 500 m and up to 900 m above sea level.
Known as a carisco, cárisco o viñático, it is a large tree, 20 m high, although it can reach 30 m. Its trunk is straight and strong and is covered by a dark gray and cracked crust. The canopy is large and dense, as far as branches have longer leaves than wide with a spear, and can reach 20 cm in length, although the average size is 15 cm. The fruit is a black berry, brighter when ripe, about 2 cm, and is one of the favorite foods of rabiche and turquoise pigeons.
The wood of the viñátigo is very appreciated in construction and cabinetmaking.
During the years that Norfolk Southern ran their daily train to and from Talbotville over CN they were a welcome break from the usual CN trains on the Dundas Sub. They were usually punctual, running behind Via #70. A former Conrail SD60I, acquired by NS in the breakup of Conrail, leads #328 just east of the former station site at Dundas. There are a few covered hoppers up front today in front of the usual empty auto parts cars returning from the Ford plant in Talbotville.

For this trip to Patagonia, I decided to use my "old" equipment: 1DX Mark II and 500mm - rather than the EOS R 3 and 600mm. This for two reasons: firstly because the EOS R 3 displayed waterproofing defects in Borneo (high humidity).
So it seems that the 1DX Mark II is much better tropicalized. It has survived the torrid heat of Namibia, the Amazon and its torrential rains and even Quebec in winter with its 30 degrees below zero. It has never given me any problem with 300,000 (or more) shots.
Then, as a second (important) argument, the auto focus of the 1 DX Mark II is much more discriminative, more punctual and therefore effective than the R 3.
Certainly the R 3 + 600 mm set weighs one kilo less - therefore much more comfortable for my neck. Of course, the R 3 also offers a few more pixels than the 1 DX Mark II (4 million more pixels) but the R 3's autofocus is not precise enough for small birds. It is very good for large birds and mammals but for fetching a small bird in a tree, among the leaves and branches, it is really not good.
I hope that the future EOS R 1 will be able to solve this problem (but at what cost?).
Pour ce voyage en Patagonie, j'ai décidé d'utiliser mon "ancien" matériel : 1DX Mark II et 500mm - plutôt que l'EOS R 3 et 600mm. Ceci pour deux raisons : d'abord parce que l'EOS R 3 présentait des défauts d'étanchéité à Bornéo (humidité élevée).
Il semblerait donc que le 1DX Mark II soit bien mieux tropicalisé. Il a survécu à la chaleur torride de la Namibie, de l'Amazonie et ses pluies torrentielles et même du Québec en hiver avec ses 30 degrés sous zéro. Cela ne m'a jamais posé de problème avec 300 000 déclenchements (ou plus).
Ensuite, comme deuxième argument (important), l'autofocus du 1 DX Mark II est bien plus discriminant, plus ponctuel et donc efficace que le R 3.
Certes, l'ensemble R 3 + 600 mm pèse un kilo de moins - donc beaucoup plus confortable pour mon cou. Bien entendu, le R 3 propose également quelques pixels de plus que le 1 DX Mark II (4 millions de pixels en plus) mais l'autofocus du R 3 n'est pas assez précis pour les petits oiseaux. C'est très bien pour les grands oiseaux et les mammifères mais pour aller chercher un petit oiseau dans un arbre, parmi les feuilles et les branches, ce n'est vraiment pas bien.
J'espère que le futur EOS R 1 saura résoudre ce problème (mais à quel prix ?).

I always admire Bufflehead Ducks but am seldom able to photograph the male showing the iridescent purple and green coloring on the head. I was happy this matted pair stayed so close together and that the male was closer to me than the female.

From Wikipedia: The bufflehead (Bucephala albeola) is a small sea duck of the genus Bucephala, the goldeneyes. This species was first described by Carl Linnaeus in his landmark 1758 10th edition of Systema Naturae as Anas albeola.
The genus name is derived from ancient Greek boukephalos, "bullheaded", from bous, "bull", and kephale, "head", a reference to the oddly bulbous head shape of the species. The species name albeola is from Latin albus, "white". he English name is a combination of buffalo and head, again referring to the head shape. This is most noticeable when the male puffs out the feathers on the head, thus greatly increasing the apparent size of the head.
Description: it rivals the green-winged teal as the smallest American duck. Adult males are striking black and white, with iridescent green and purple heads and a large white patch behind the eye. Females are grey-toned with a smaller white patch behind the eye and a light underside.
Behavior:
Buffleheads have evolved their small size to fit the nesting cavity of their "metabiotic" host, a woodpecker, the northern flicker. Due to their small size, they are highly active, undertaking dives almost continuously while sustained by their high metabolism. They do not tend to collect in large flocks; groups are usually limited to small numbers. One duck serves as a sentry, watching for predators as the others in the group dive in search of food. Buffleheads are amongst the last waterfowl to leave their breeding grounds and one of the world's most punctual migrants, arriving on their wintering grounds within a narrow margin of time.

Bei frostigen Temperaturen konnte am 20. Januar erneut eine sog. Škoda-Garnitur bei Vierkirchen fotografiert werden. Allen Unkenrufen zum Trotz, befördert 102 005-6 ihren RE 1 (4013) pünktlich und zuverlässig von Nürnberg nach München.
In freezing temperatures, a so-called Škoda train was once again photographed near Vierkirchen on January 20th. Despite all the prophecies of doom, 102 005-6 is hauling its RE 1 (4013) punctually and reliably from Nuremberg to Munich.
XP2015 emerges from the shadows and the now dense vegetation at Mathiesons Siding, with the overnight XPT service from Sydney to Melbourne as ST21.

Train travel in Japan isn't all about the Shinkansen, or Bullet Train. There are many rural lines such as the one that serves where we live. There are only a few trains per day to Morioka, the nearest town. We took one last Friday and made sure to get there in plenty of time as trains are really punctual here. This young man helped us decipher some of the announcements being made as our Japanese isn't up to it yet
Enorm verspätet war am 19. September 2020 der sonst recht pünktlich verkehrende DGS 40648 von Curtici nach Rheinhausen. Der Zug war einheitlich mit Aufliegern der Spedition LKW Walter beladen, die daneben üblichen 40 Fuß-Silodruckcontainer der Spedition Poll-Nussbaumer fehlten an diesem Tage. Für die Beförderung des KLV war die GySEV 471 502 eingeteilt. Bei Kerschhofen in der Oberpfalz erwartete ich die fotogene Leistung.

The beaver went extinct in the Netherlands in the beginning of the 19th century, but was reintroduced ca 30 years ago.
A successful introduction because since then ca 3500 beavers have spread across our country, One of the areas where they seem to be abundant is the Biesbosch and Noordwaard, but until this summer I never had seen them.
So when the Corona ban on camping was lifted, I spent a few days to look for it, and when I was given direction and time of appearance I went to a bridge, where this lovely (and very punctual) beaver showed up at the agreed time :).
Waarschijnlijk hebben jullie deze trein al meerdere keren voorbij zien komen bij mijn collega's. Gisteren leek het wel alsof iedereen had afgesproken om hem te fotograferen!
Ook ik had 23 februari met stip in mijn agenda gemarkeerd voor een foto van deze bijzondere trein. Het was een van die zondagen zonder verplichtingen, en met de zon hoog aan de hemel kon ik deze kans natuurlijk niet laten schieten.
Terwijl veel collega's koers zetten richting de luchthaven van Deurne, koos ik voor een andere aanpak. Ik waagde mijn kans op een van de bruggen over de E19 en Lijn 25N, tussen Peutie en Elewijt/Zemst. Van de drie bruggen met een geschikte zonnestand bleef na controle alleen de noordelijkste over. De brug aan de Ravaartstraat is inmiddels een ecoduct met een te hoge afsluiting, die aan de N278 biedt uitzicht richting een militair domein (niet ideaal, lijkt me), maar ook die bij de Nieuwbrugstraat vervult zijn functie. Bovendien zijn de bosjes tussen de spoorlijn en de rijbaan net hoog genoeg om de snelweg grotendeels uit beeld te houden – een prima keuze dus.
Na een EC vanuit Rotterdam, een graffiti-getagde Break en een vertraagde Eurostar richting Parijs, verscheen dan keurig op tijd het object van mijn verlangen aan de horizon.
Wat een pracht van een trein! Dankzij de stipte passage opende dit perspectieven voor meer. Wordt vervolgd...

You’ve probably already seen this train multiple times from my colleagues. Yesterday, it seemed as if everyone had agreed to photograph it!
I had also marked February 23rd in my calendar as a must for capturing this special train. It was one of those Sundays without obligations, and with the sun high in the sky, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity.
While many colleagues headed toward Deurne airport, I chose a different approach. I took my chances on one of the bridges over the E19 and Line 25N, between Peutie and Elewijt/Zemst.
After an EC from Rotterdam, a graffiti-tagged Break, and a delayed Eurostar to Paris, the object of my desire finally appeared on the horizon, right on time.
What a stunning train! Thanks to its punctual passage, it opened up perspectives for more. To be continued...

Doing well on punctuality tonight, the Borealis cruises under Dayton's Bluff with a short distance left to Saint Paul Union Depot. Superliners are now standard equipment with the rebuilding of the Horizon cars underway for structural deficiencies. I really enjoy having an Amtrak arrival in the middle of the evening. Such good stuff.
Zoals eerder vermeld, bood de stipte doortocht van de "European Sleeper" mij de perfecte gelegenheid om nog een open punt van mijn to-dolijst af te vinken. Ik moest er ongeveer een uur voor rijden en had dus voldoende tijd om in Vilvoorde nog te wachten op de EuroCity, die zo’n twintig minuten na de nachttrein zou passeren. Tot mijn grote vreugde reed ook deze – net als de trein van een uur eerder – met een van de nieuwe Traxx-locomotieven van de NMBS op kop.
Nu de foto van deze trein veilig in mijn digitale collectie zat, keerde ik terug naar de wagen en begon aan mijn rit van ruim 80 kilometer naar Nimy, net voor Mons. Onderweg namen de wolken toe, maar alsof het zo moest zijn, brak de zon precies op mijn gekozen locatie aan de Grand Large weer uitbundig door. De aangekondigde sluierbewolking voor de avond was echter al zichtbaar.
Na het opzetten van het hoogstatief kon het wachten beginnen op de OuiGo van Brussel naar Parijs, die die dag bestond uit een relatief homogene stam. Tevreden dat ik deze kleurrijke trein opnieuw kon vastleggen – en ditmaal op een voor mij nieuwe locatie – begon ik aan de terugrit naar huis.
Dit was zonder twijfel een geslaagde en vruchtbare spotdag!

As previously mentioned, the punctual passage of the "European Sleeper" provided me with the perfect opportunity to check off another item on my to-do list. I had to drive for about an hour, which gave me enough time to wait a little longer in Vilvoorde for the EuroCity, passing about twenty minutes after the night train. To my great delight, this train—just like the one an hour earlier—was also led by one of NMBS’s new Traxx locomotives.
With the photo of this train safely stored in my digital collection, I returned to my car and began the 80-kilometer drive to Nimy, just before Mons. Along the way, the clouds grew denser, but as if by design, the sun broke through brilliantly at my chosen spot at the Grand Large. However, the high-altitude clouds forecasted by the KMI for the evening were already visible.
After setting up the tall tripod, the wait began for the OuiGo from Brussels to Paris, which that day was composed of a relatively uniform trainset. Pleased to have captured this colorful train once again—this time at a new location for me—I started my journey back home.
Without a doubt, this had been a successful and productive spotting day!

For a couple of years it was said that freight trains on old Coal Trunk Line was a result of PKP PLK's track access charges policy which made the cost of freight trains on unelectrified secondary lines far less in comparison to electrified mainlines. I'm not sure whether it was a case, or rather the problems with mainline capacity, anyway it let railway photographers make many pictures of freight trains here, as up to three Southbound trains were running during daylight (this one to KWK Halemba, tankers to Puławy Azoty, and the third to Chełm Wschodni). They were quite punctual, although not running everyday, except of this very one, that was every day certainty.

Dosłownie kilka lat PKP Cargo przeprowadziło trzy pary pociągów towarowych z Gdyni starą Magistralą Węglową - mówiło się iż z powodu określonej polityki PKP PLK, promującej jazdę po drugorzędnych niezelektryfikowanych liniach (faktem jest, że Lotos swój pionierski dalekobieżny pociąg z Gdańska do Emilianowa trasował w znakomitej większości trasy liniami bez druta). Nie wiem, czy to był prawdziwy powód, niemniej stanowiło to nie lada gratkę dla fotografów. Latem wszystkie trzy pociągi na południe jechały w porze dziennej. Oprócz tego na zdjęciu - codziennego pewniaka - z Gdyni wyruszały jeszcze towarowe do Puław (głównie beczki) oraz Chełma (na ogół węglarki).

Een puntje dat ik al lange tijd wou afvinken, was een foto maken van de Ouigo die om 13:38 Brussel-Zuid verlaat richting Parijs, net na de bundel van Hennuyères. Qua zonnestand kan dit hier in de winter net nog, al is een stipte doorkomst van de trein daarbij wel een absolute must. Vandaag, 24 januari 2026, leverde dat gelukkig geen enkel probleem op.
Wat op deze plek intussen wél steeds meer een noodzaak is geworden, is het gebruik van een hoogstatief. De bomen vóór de brug zijn de voorbije jaren zo sterk gegroeid dat fotograferen vanop brugniveau niet langer mogelijk is. Aangezien ik dat hoogstatief standaard in de auto meehad, was dat obstakel snel overwonnen.
Het had meteen ook de ideale test moeten worden voor mijn kerstcadeau: een Sirui-balhoofd, waarmee ik de camera makkelijker waterpas zou kunnen zetten en bovendien vanop het hoogstatief schuin naar beneden zou kunnen richten. Alleen… dat was buiten de waard gerekend. Mijn statief bleek een 1/4-inch schroef te hebben, terwijl het Sirui-balhoofd met een 3/8-inch aansluiting werkt.
Dan maar op de ouderwetse manier: één van de poten iets hoger geplaatst, met behulp van mijn fototas die ik eronder schoof. Dat bleek geen overbodige luxe, want anders had ik überhaupt geen trein op de foto gekregen. De Ouigo was voor de gelegenheid — en iets wat voor mij al lange tijd niet meer gelukt was — volledig homogeen samengesteld uit de fraaie blauw-roze I11-rijtuigen, zonder dat er ergens een wit exemplaar tussenzat.
Het spreekt voor zich dat ik het probleem met de statiefschroef later die dag nog ben gaan oplossen. Met een eenvoudige adapter past nu alles zoals het hoort. De echte test van het balhoofd zal dus voor een volgende fotosessie zijn — maar deze Ouigo, op het juiste moment, op de juiste plek en in deze samenstelling, was die kleine improvisatie meer dan waard.

One shot I had been wanting to tick off for quite some time was a photo of the Ouigo service departing Brussels South at 13:38 towards Paris, just beyond the Hennuyères junction. In winter, the sun angle here is only just workable, and a punctual passage of the train is absolutely essential. Fortunately, on 24 January 2026, timing was spot on.
What has meanwhile become increasingly necessary at this location is the use of a high tripod. The trees in front of the bridge have grown so much over the years that photographing from bridge level is no longer possible. Luckily, I had the high tripod with me in the car, so that issue was quickly solved.
It should also have been the perfect opportunity to test my Christmas present: a Sirui ball head, which would have allowed me to level the camera more easily and finally aim it slightly downward from the high tripod. That plan, however, didn’t quite work out — my tripod uses a 1/4-inch screw, while the Sirui ball head requires a 3/8-inch mount.
So I reverted to the old-school method: raising one of the tripod legs by placing my camera bag underneath it. That turned out to be absolutely necessary, as otherwise I wouldn’t have had a train in the frame at all. For the occasion — and something that hadn’t happened to me in quite a long time — the Ouigo was made up entirely of the attractive blue-and-pink I11 coaches, without a single white one interrupting the consist.
Needless to say, I went on to fix the tripod screw issue later that same day. With a simple adapter, everything now fits as it should. The real test of the ball head will therefore have to wait for another photo session — but this Ouigo, at the right moment, in the right place, and in such a perfect formation, was more than worth a bit of improvisation.

(Thaïlande) - Voyager en train en Thaïlande présente plusieurs avantages. Tarifs très attractifs surtout pour la 3è classe. Certes, le confort est rustique : sièges en bois et pas de climatisation. Juste un ventilateur, mais c’est bien suffisant. Le train est une occasion unique pour entrer en contact avec les populations locales. Les autres voyageurs viendront immanquablement vous proposer des fruits et du thé.
Le pays dispose de 4 lignes ferroviaires, dont celle qui longe la péninsule Thaïlandaise de Bangkok à la frontière malaisienne. Il y a quelques trains « rapides », plus chers ; mais en règle générale la vitesse moyenne plafonne à 40 km/h. Bien entendu, ces trains sont rarement ponctuels. Aujourd’hui, c’est ça aussi l’aventure.
What is the station master?
Khlong Wang Chang (Thailand) - Traveling by train in Thailand has several advantages. Very attractive prices especially for 3rd class. Admittedly, the comfort is rustic: wooden seats and no air conditioning. Just a fan, but that's good enough. The train is a unique opportunity to get in touch with the local populations. Other travelers will inevitably come to offer you fruit and tea.
The country has 4 railway lines, including the one (photo) that runs along the Thai peninsula from Bangkok to the Malaysian border. There are a few more expensive "fast" trains; but as a general rule the average speed is capped at 40 km/h. Of course, these trains are rarely punctual. That's the adventure.
Vorig jaar besloot ik om in 2023 een reis naar het land van de rijzende zon te maken: Japan. Een reis die door omstandigheden onderhand 12 tot 14 uur vliegen is, maar dat was het wel waard. Zodoende vertrok ik 15 mei vanaf Frankfurt richting het land van kersenbloesem, sake en de stipt op tijd rijdende treinen.
Voor dat laatste was eigenlijk weinig tijd om foto's van te maken, ik kwam er uiteraard niet voor de spoorwegen. Desondanks had ik hier en daar nog een gaatje in mijn planning over, vooral in Tokio. Tokio was de laatste stop van de trip.
Op 31 mei kwam ik per regionale exprestrein aan op station Shinjuku, 's werelds drukste station met een absoluut bizar aantal gemiddelde reizigers per dag, rond de 3,5 miljoen. Per metro eindigde de rit uiteindelijk in Daimon, waar het hotel gevestigd was. Vlakbij lag het station Hamamatsuchō, en gezien ik 's avonds nog een beetje tijd overhad vóór het avondeten en zonsondergang leek het een uitgerekende kans eens wat treinen in de imposante omgeving van Tokio op de foto te zetten.
Aan de oostzijde van het station lopen de Shinkansen-sporen van de Tokaido Shinkansen, die van Kioto naar Tokio v.v. leiden. De dienst op deze lijn wordt tegenwoordig geheel uitgevoerd door treinstellen van de serie N700A en -S van JR Central en JR West.
Op de foto zien we treinstel uit de seir N700S langs de perrons van Hamamatsuchō rijden, met tot het eindpunt Tokyo Station nog luttele minuten te gaan.
Terwijl je op zo'n locatie staat, besef je pas hoe frequent de dienstregeling is. Over het algemeen kwam er minstens elke 5 minuten wel een treinstel uit één van de twee richtingen. Een indrukwekkend hogesnelheidssysteem.
Last year I decided to make a trip to Japan in 2023. From the 15th of May until the 5th of June I traveled around the country of cherry blossoms, sake, and the famously punctual trains.
Of course I did not visit for the sake of railway photography, but in between my scheduled plans I was able to find some time to picture some trains.
During my stay in Tokyo, the last city of the journey, I took the time in the evening of the first day to photograph a bit around the Hamamatsucho station. There, the Shinkansen tracks of the Tokaido Shinkansen run along the east of the station towards Tokyo Station.
In the picture, we can see an EMU of the N700S series run by JR East just minutes away from its terminal Tokyo Station.

In de eerste maanden van 1985 viel er een flink pak sneeuw in Nederland. De gemoderniseerde dieseltwee 184 rijdt hier keurig op tijd het station Wijlre binnen. De seinhuiswachter die zojuist de wissels nog schoongeveegd had, geniet vanuit het seinhuis van een warme kop koffie en van de ongestoorde doortocht van de trein.
During the winter of 1985 a Dutch Railways dmu type X ploughs it way through the snow in the hilly south Limburg landscape. Hand operated signals and a classic train from proven design are both a guarantee for a punctual service even in these for the Netherlands uncommon circumstances. In May 1988 this scenic line was closed. Since 1995 museumtrains of the Zuid-Limburgse Stoomtrein Maatschappij are running on this section.

The airline quickly won a reputation for its quality of service, punctuality, and distinctive look. The competition was fierce but Horizon's destinations continued to increase, correlating with Orion's increased route-network and fleet growth.
Ex-LMS Black 5 locomotive No. 45212 building speed along the Glenfinnan Viaduct on the Scottish West Highland line between Fort William and Mallaig. The driver graciously slowed the train on the descending approach to the viaduct, before increasing power to produce a photogenic plume from the chimney as it made the crossing. The weather conditions were very poor, with so much rain that visibility was awful, so I had to process the raw file quite a bit to extract enough contrast to make this worth posting. I saw this train several times and each time was amazed that the rake of seven carriages was drawn solely by a Black 5 with no backup diesel-electric locomotive seemingly required. The services were very punctual too!
Diese Vögel haben einen festen Tagesplan, bei mir kommen täglich morgens gegen 10:00 und abends zwischen 17:30 und 18:30 Uhr drei Stieglitze vorbei. Sie sind konstanter und pünktlicher als die Deutsche Bahn. :-D Bei einem ihrer Besuche konnte ich einen von ihnen im Apfelbaum fotografieren.
Um diesen schönen Vogel besonders detailreich sehen zu können, drückt die Tasten l (kleines L) und F11. Beim vergrößern nur durch Anklicken gehen viele Details verloren.
These birds have a fixed daily schedule, three goldfinches come to my garden every morning around 10:00 a.m. and in the evening between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. They are more consistent and punctual than Deutsche Bahn. :-D On one of their visits I was able to photograph one of them in the apple tree.

In-between repainting the house and trying (but failing, unfortunately) to properly catch up with all my friends after my vacation, I noticed this shot that I took at the beach last month and didn't need any sort of editing to my mind. So I thought I'd post it for all my wonderful Friends as a thank you for your support and patience these past few weeks with a promise to get all my housework over and done with soon so I can finally start being more punctual and repay you all for all the love and kindness you've shown me! :)))

Zwischen Petershausen und Vierkirchen fuhr mir am 30. Juni 2018 der RE 4029 auf seiner Fahrt zum Münchner HBF vor die Linse. Geführt wurde der Zug von der 101 094, die mit ihrer Seitenwerbung darauf hinweist, dass die Mitarbeiter der Deutschen Bahn hart für jede Sekunde Pünktlichkeit arbeiten.
On June 30th 2018 I took this picture of regional express train RE 4029 on its way to Munich main station between Petershausen and Vierkirchen. It was hauled by 101 094. This engine shows an advertisement on its sides - remembering that all staff members at Deutsche Bahn are working hard on every second of punctuality.
