Gustave Tassell American, 1926-2014
Evening Dress Spring 1967
Acetate/rayon crepe
Gustave Tassell explores both color and geometry in this sophisticated update of a toga, layered with a diagonal swath of black over an intense pink one-sleeved, body-skimming dress. The designer studied painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts before opening his ready-to-wear business in Los Angeles. This dress illustrates Tassell’s design restraint, perfect proportions, and uncompromising purity of line.

I was experimenting shooting freehand in front of the TV. When you pivot the camera you get multiple exposures, but they only last a second before they start pulsating between extreme contrast & blackouts that come in waves across your screen.
I am back after some days of just inhaling the beauty of the Cyclades.
My harddisk is at the clinic - so we will see, if anything can be saved.
I relaxed enough to appreciate, that the crash of a harddisk could as well mean: Well, then i can start taking pictures of EVERY flower in my garden again :-))))))))))
Jokes apart, i had a wonderful time, want to share some impressions of it with you during the next days - well, what else can I do, lol. I have nothing else to upload.
And I hope, i will keep a bit of the relaxed modus and time, to keep up a little bit with all, you presented during my absence.
I am definitely looking forward to it.
Have a great evening, night or day, whereever you are, my dear friends.
The top image is the sky over Sydney showing the Southern Cross, just using my normal camera with no telescopes or other assistance.
The image beneath is the same image with a labelled astronomy program overlaid as accurately as I could manage, but due to lens distortion they are not a perfect fit.
You can see The Southern Cross, or Crux, and some of the Centaurus Constellation.
Now this was taken at nearly midnight and my backyard is fairly dark so theres a lot more star detail visible than in the early morning shots of the planetary alignment when the Sun's predawn light starts to make the stars disappear.
Crux, or the Southern Cross, is the brightest constellation in the southern sky. It is also the smallest of the Western constellations. Together with the Southern Gate it contains 5 of the 28 visibly brightest stars in the sky.
Now I saw some others on flickr who have these wonderful computerised stands that move your camera slowly to keep track of the moving stars. Therefore getting long exposures with very long lenses that show great deep sky detail as a result of these exposures being combined
Those look very cool and much superior to this of course, but even without that, its surprising what result you can get. And its quite interesting to identify the stars and take a look!
Together with the stars Alpha and Beta Centauri Crux forms a pointer in the heavens, indicating the seasonal changes in the year. They point roughly toward the galactic center in Sagittarius.
In that capacity it performs the same function as the Great Bear did to the astrologers of ancient China for the Northern Hemisphere.
To the Chinese the Southern Cross and many of the stars in the Centaur formed their constellation of “The Arsenal”, the Cross is the “Arsenal Tower”, or “Heavenly Tower”. The stars Alpha and Beta Centauri were near the entrance into the Arsenal, and were known by themselves as “The Southern Gate”. The Southern Gate and most of the Arsenal are in the 1st Chinese lunar mansion “The Horn”, and lay in a straight line of sight due south of the magnificent star Spica in the constellation of Virgo. That star marks the commencement of the Chinese Great Year of 12 years duration.
In Australian Aboriginal Legends, the Boorung people of modern day Victoria called the Southern Cross “Bunya”, the possum, while the surrounding stars—specifically the Southern Gate and other stars in the Centaur-- went to make up their “Tchingal”, the Emu.
To the Noonuccal people of Stradbroke Island in the Torres Straits it is a visible symbol of the hereafter and of the All-Father.
Three of the stars in Crux are some of the brightest visual stars in the sky. Acrux, or Alpha Crucis, is the 14th brightest star, lying at 370 light-years from us. It is actually a binary system (2 stars), both stars of roughly the same size each. They are massive B-type stars of between 15 to 20 times the mass of our Sun. This is considered to be one of the very finest binaries in the heavens and they are separated by a distance of roughly six times the diameter of our solar system—a very bright solar system indeed.
Beta Crucis is the 20th brightest star in the sky with a mass of about 20 times our Sun. It is a pulsating star and lies at a distance of 490 light-years. Just to put these distances in perspective our parent system of Sirius is only a mere 10.8 light-years from us. The central pivot of our local universe—Alcyone in the Pleiades—lies at a distance of 400 light years. Gamma Crucis is a red giant star of about the same size as Alpha and Beta Crucis and is the 28th brightest star in the sky. It lies out at a distance of about 220 light years. Delta Crucis is another star like Alpha and Beta weighing in at about 15 Suns and at a distance of 570 light years. These are the 4 main stars which form the points of the cross.
There is a very interesting cluster in Crux called the “Jewel Box”. It is what is termed a galactic cluster and is ranked among the finest objects in the southern Milky Way. The 50 or so brightest stars in the cluster are crammed into a space of no more than 25 light-years diameter. That would be like having 50 stars much brighter than our recent Mars spectacular ever-present in the night sky of one living in that part of the galaxy. They would drown out all but the brighter stars in that part of the universe, because some of those stars are more than 40 times the mass of our Sun, making them some of the most massive and luminous stars in our galaxy. To give some idea of brightness, the brightest of these stars is calculated to be around 80,000 times more luminous than our Sun, if you can imagine that. These stars are classed as supergiants and together form the core of one of the youngest clusters of stars known to us.

The Fishmarket (Vismarkt) of Bruges is also a special place.
Yes, it is a market square, built in the beginning of the 19th century, they still do sell fish there on one corner in the mornings from Tuesday till Saturday.
But for several years artists, craftsmen and different market people sell their or others’ creations here as well.
It is a kind of a market community, organism living its own life, you can feel it pulsate, if you go there.
In 1821 came the covered place of sale, to the design of city architect Jan-Robert Calloigne .
The result is a portico with Tuscan columns 126 enclosing a rectangular open courtyard.
In 1852, the original wooden tables sales were replaced by banks selling bricks.
These are still present.
Around the square you find fish shops and inns.
I wish you a day full of beauty and thank you for your visit, Magda, (*_*)

I usually don't post quick single exposure test shots just for observation purposes, as it doesn't really do justice to a Deep Sky Object, but I decided to share this anyway due to its unusual nature and interesting subject matter. This quick 30 second photo was really just taken to satisfy my curiosity in photographing a "dying star".
A Wide Field photo of M46 (also known as Messier 46 or NGC 2437), an open cluster about 5,500 light-years away, in the constellation of Puppis. M46 was discovered by the "comet hunter" Charles Messier in 1771.
There are an estimated 500 stars in the cluster, and it is calculated to be around 300 million years old.
The Planetary Nebula NGC 2438 appears to lie within the cluster, but it is most likely unrelated since it does not share the cluster's radial velocity (the Planetary Nebula is the small spherical object in the photo).
What is a Planetary Nebula?
A Planetary Nebula has nothing to do with a Planet (even though one can see how the first Astronomers described it as such), but is an expanding shell of ionized gas that has been ejected from, and surrounds a hot dying star of about the same mass as the Sun. The gas absorbs Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the star, and re-emits it as visible light via the process of fluorescence. The fate of a star is determined by its mass.
This will be the fate of the Sun in about 5 billion years from now, after its nuclear fusion process converted all the Hydrogen nuclei into Helium. The Hydrogen Atom is the simplest and most abundant element in the Universe (with only 1 Proton and 1 Electron). Through the process of fusion, more complex elements are made at different stages of a star's life and death cycle.
Carl Sagan Quotes from Cosmos that describe what we see:
"In its final agonies, the sun will slowly pulsate. By then, its core will have become so hot that it temporarily converts helium into carbon. The ash from today's nuclear fusion will become the fuel to power the sun near the end of its life in its red giant stage. Then the sun will lose great shells of its outer atmosphere to space filling the solar system with eerily glowing gas. The ghost of a star, outward bound.
Perhaps half the mass of the sun will be lost in this way. Viewed from elsewhere, our system will then resemble the Ring Nebula in Lyra the atmosphere of the sun expanding outward like a soap bubble. And at the very center will be a white dwarf. The hot exposed core of the sun its nuclear fuel now exhausted, slowly cooling to become a cold, dead star. Such is the life of an ordinary star. Born in a gas cloud, maturing as a yellow sun decaying as a red giant and dying as a white dwarf enveloped in its shroud of gas." - Carl Sagan - Cosmos - The Lives of the Stars.
"Nothing lasts forever, even the stars die." - Carl Sagan, Cosmos.
“The nitrogen in our DNA, the calcium in our teeth, the iron in our blood, the carbon in our apple pies were made in the interiors of collapsing stars. We are made of starstuff.” - Carl Sagan, Cosmos.

Eta Carinae Nebula, Keel Nebula, NGC 3372. It is a large emission nebula that surrounds several open star clusters. Among these stars are Eta Carinae and HD 93129A, two of the most massive and brightest stars in the Milky Way. The nebula is at an estimated distance of 6,500 to 10,000 light years. It is located in the constellation of the Keel (Carina). The nebula contains several type O stars.
The Keel Nebula is one of the most extensive in the sky. Although it is approximately four times larger and brighter than the famous Orion nebula (M 42), NGC 3372 is much less known due to its location in the southern hemisphere. It was discovered in 1751 by Nicolas Louis de Lacaille from the Cape of Good Hope.
Within this great nebula is the Homunculus Nebula, which is believed to have been ejected in 1841 in a huge explosion that made Eta Carinae briefly become the second brightest star in the sky.
The star Eta Carinae is a highly luminous hypergiant. It is calculated a mass between 100 and 150 times the mass of the Sun and its luminosity is about four million times that of it, being the most massive star that can be studied in great detail. It is possible that other known stars have larger masses, as well as higher luminosities. However, the available data about the latter are much less reliable.
Until 2006, Eta Carinae was the brightest confirmed star, based on data taken over a wide range of wavelengths. Stars with a mass of 80 times the solar mass produce more than a million times the light produced by the Sun. These stars are quite rare-there are only a few dozen in a galaxy the size of ours-and can have disastrous endings when approaching the limit of Eddington, in which the pressure generated out due to its radiation can be so great as to compensate the force of gravity. Stars with more than 120 solar masses exceed the theoretical Eddington limit and their gravity is barely sufficient to maintain their radiation and their gas, resulting in a supernova or a hypernova.
A portion of the Carina Nebula is known as the Keyhole Nebula (from the English "lock"), a name given by John Herschel in the 19th century. This nebula is much smaller and darker, composed of cold molecules and dust containing bright filaments of hot fluorescent gas that is contrasted against the brightest nebula in the background. The diameter of the Keyhole Nebula is approximately seven light years.
NGC 3324. It is an open stellar cluster in the southern part of the Carina constellation, located northwest of the Eta Carina nebula. It is about 7,500 light years away. It is associated with the emission nebula IC 2599. Frequently the two objects are confused as one, and together they receive the denomination of "Nebula Gabriela Mistral", in memory of the Chilean poetess.
IC 2599. It is an emission nebula associated with the star cluster NGC 3324. It was discovered by Edward Charles Pickering in 1893.
NGC 3293. It is an open star cluster in the constellation Carina. It was discovered by Abbe Lacaille in 1751. It contains more than 100 stars above the magnitude 14 in a field of 10 ', the brightest are blue supergiants. There is also a pulsating red supergiant of magnitude 7, V361 Carinae.
NGC 3496. It is an open star cluster with an angular size of 7 'and apparent magnitude 8.2. It was discovered by John Herschell in 1834. It is 3,200 light years away.
NGC 3503. It is an emission nebula with an associated stellar cluster, of magnitude 13 and 3 'of apparent size. It is about 9,500 light years away.
NGC 3532, Pincushion cluster, Soccer cluster. It is an open star cluster about 1,300 light years away, in the constellation of Carina. Its population, of about 150 seventh-magnitude or weaker stars, includes seven red giants and seven white dwarfs. On May 20, 1990, it became the first object observed by the Hubble Space Telescope. The cluster is between the constellation Crux and the larger but weaker asterism called the "False Cross". The Cepheid variable star of the fourth magnitude x Carinae (V382 Car) appears near the southeast boundary, but lies between the Sun and the cluster and is not a member of the cluster.
The cluster was first cataloged by Nicolas Louis de Lacaille in 1751. He was admired by John Herschel, who considered it one of the best star clusters in the sky, with many double stars.

Poem.
Beautiful Affric.
As if the Caledonian Forest breathes out,
the mist slowly rises
like a spirit rising to the ethereal heavens.
Just visible, the River Affric surges down the valley,
two hundred feet below, just east of Dog Falls.
Life here is so abundant,
from Golden Eagle to Wood Ants,
from Red Deer Stag to Pine-Marten.
In the dawn, a slow pulse of life gathers pace.
Life begins to pulsate, quietly but tangibly.
The carpet of life is mesmerising.
Stately, dignified Scots Pine sweep up and down
these slopes for over thirty miles.
Early golden gorse contrasts with still burnished bracken.
“Lambs-tail” catkins quivering in the slightest breeze
confirm that spring has arrived.
Delicate silver-birch branches hang, bare of leaves,
but laden with tiny buds.
The sun is rising fast and soon the mist will burn away.
The promise of a glorious new day creates a quiet excitement and anticipation.
This place is very special.
It has a spirit that absorbs my own and softly whispers its reassuring but unassuming reality.
It beckons the senses to see, hear and feel its stupendous splendour, again, and again!
Abraham "Bram" Stoker (8 November 1847 – 20 April 1912) was an Irish author, best known today for his 1897 Gothic novel, Dracula. During his lifetime, he was better known as the personal assistant of actor Henry Irving and business manager of the Lyceum Theatre in London, which Irving owned.
Arise! Awake! A mist descends upon the city streets. Sounds pulsate beneath our feet. The sky shudders as Macnas spirits are unleashed by Twilight.
Come out and celebrate with Danu, Goddess of the Divine and Dark: brutal and beautiful, warrior and mother, hallowed and holy, she protects and provokes, takes flight and goes underground.
Mummers and drummers follow and seek. Demons and angels love and loathe, the dead dance and the living transform. Men become gods, fools become Kings, souls are sanctified, reptiles are rarefied and the city streets transform as the journey unfolds.
Bram Stoker Festival are delighted to once again welcome Macnas to Dublin for a city-wide procession to launch the city into Samhain [Halloween].

I want to trace the evolution of the black wave, from the very first touch of shade around the virgin corners...and then way down deep into the recesses of the drowning of my innocence.
I have choked on the truth of myself and my mind is not a pretty, delicate place. My heart is pulsating with as much hate as beauty and love and affection.
Rage is before the pain and then there is nothing but despair when the layers are peeled off and then there is nothing at all, there is a vast, limitless nothingness and below that some sort of spark in the black pool and the spark is alternating textures of love and hate, love and hate, love and hate. Anger. Rage. Compassion. Rejection. Need and desire. Accusations years old and newer and ....older. So much older.
Primordial oozings, the evolutionary process, memory preserved in rock, then pulp, then brain, translated into mutable dreams, abstract thoughts, 20 second climaxes you can't translate onto paper or connect the dots with a look in the mirror. I spit at the image and I worship it a second later. I am more than I thought possible. I am made of nothingness and black death and empty, wrenching pits, and unlimited sorrow and shame. I am lighter than air, as insubstantial as a lie. And I am alive. I live, I breathe, I desire.
The black colors have smeared grey, dark like oil, smudged like charcoal, running thin like watercolors. The black wave, the sharp claw, the hook, the choking grasp; these intangible devices ever present reminders of the game aspect of life: a russian roulette with all the places bet.
I'll dance faster. I'll keep dancing into the dark and I'll close my eyes and spin and force my way back. Standing witness to the ciascuro of my life, the double reflection, the looking glass inside out, the light dying out and being re-ignited, I falter, I fall, I fall apart and fall back together again. I face inevitability with the mystery of my body in the present. There is only this moment.

Café Frequenters Episode 118
----------------------------------------
Hello Maud!
Sorry for not keeping in touch lately, work, GF, Daughter, all is a bit to much right now, rarly even have enough time to party, drink coffee and party... I do meet Tim at the Café sometimes: how are you? how are the children you have spawned? they must be older now than when I saw them last time!
Don´t really know what to write, it feels like I am getting more and more distant from everything that I liked, that includes you lot, even if I never would admit it...
Hear is a sneak preview of the book I am writing so I can get the noble prize, you know that golden medal you can get, but I only want the golden one, I don´t want a bronze noble-prize, that would be an insult!
Well, anyway here is a chapter or draft or whatever you say:
Chapter: unknown
Page: unknown
Was it my boss being all american-pissed for me having another snooze at work and accidentally burning down the entire covert operation once more?
Or was it the might Mr. Smudge?
Who in a sweaty masculine butch way was wielding his great Mustache in an exited manner?
When Jimmy thought these thoughts he could feel Smudges mighty whiskers tickling his neck just like in the old golden days!
...or could it be someone completely different, Oh NO! could it have been the Daemon???
Did it have his phone number?
He Shut all of his visual organs (that is the eyes and his special skin-vision they only granted the best spies at the Säpo agency!)
(any how!)
He turned of all his vision to go in to deep imagine-vision inside his brain!
But Sadly the only inner-vision he could summon was a blurry half transparent spinning mess in a sort of weird haze mostly colored bleached purple and light pink!
Then out of nowhere a shape started taking form, He started to expect the worst, almost ready to kick some bucket or jar of other metallic construction!
Then a Movie in sepia started to play, full of grains and dust, then after a few flicks, it started to become color again, and the shape started to reemerge even more physical and almost completely outlined like a colorful shadow sparkling in a fain´t dazzling way!
He wanted to turn his inner-vision off, because he anticipated the next more before it unfolded before him, it was, it was, oh, No it was Him!
..it was that! it!
The Daemon, this time he was green he had a band or lace of winking eyes around his neck gouged and plucked from different organic Creatures from timelines all over the omniverse!
They eyes was revolving in a manner of slow but firm movement like it knew it´s own importance that is in a very self-assured manner!
His tail was filled with different kitchen utilities from gourmet -restaurants probably stole and resold a million times!
He pulled up his tail from the inner-dream-visions floor and drove a mighty syringe through Jimmy´s cranial skeleton right in to his soft organic tissue called brain!
Jimmy Knew that he had to snap out of this vision soon or it would be too late to revert and regain normal vision!
...fist there was a throbbing pulse through his tail, then Jimmy felt his imaginary brain in the dream vision pulsate in a similar manner, and so di his real brain to slowly, slowly it started to vibrate...
Jimmy said to Jimmy: Hey Jimmy, I count to three and then we pull out, WE MUST I repeat, WE MUST pull out or perish to his will!
Jimmy started an imaginary countdown, three, two, one, ZERO focused all his Power to a single point-like minute space-time, the bond there started to give away, soon like a whole lot of octopodal suckers giving way at the same time, they plopped like this: Plopp, Plopp, Plopp, Plopp and plopp!
The chainreaction had begun!
He was temporarily free from the nightmarish grasp of HIM!
His most mighty and potent adversary!
When he regain his real-time-vision, first slowly his skin vision then slowly his visual-vision he found his body on the hallway carpet twitching like a can of gassed grubs in their last death rattles so helpless and Frail!
He just wished Smudge was there that would comfort him!
He wanted to cry both out of joy of the tiny victory and out of fear for his future wellbeing!
When his consciousness was fully regained his audio-vision could still hear the phone calling!
Should he take it?
Pull the taurino through the biblical loophole?
No, Jimmy! better lie down here for a while and regain more strength , was there any whiskey at home?
What do you think Maud? this is just a small sample from my future book, I will call it Das Roman I don´t know if it is correct german, I did study it in school for two years but me and Assad where mostly sleeping through it and if our lovely teacher woke us up, we would just say one of the two words we taught us: that is Manchmal and Veillicht! it worked for every question!
I mean you are Half or fully Austrian and fluent in that language, you could at the very least comment on the book title?
I hope all is well with you and the others and I hope to see you all again soon, I just have to go through this period of hell at the hotel first!

Kinda forgot about this shot, the first from Balnakeil beach during the epic display in March. We could see the bright aurora band on the drive up from Loch Nam Brack, and by the time we reached Durness it had twisted in a rayed band, so it was a quick dash to set up the camera's This was taken using my Samyang 14mm lens to get a wider perspective.

Edited Hubble Space Telescope image of the spiral galaxy NGC 105. Color/processing variant.
Original caption: This image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope captures the spiral galaxy NGC 105, which lies roughly 215 million light-years away in the constellation Pisces. While it looks like NGC 105 is plunging edge-on into a collision with a neighbouring galaxy, this is just the result of the chance alignment of the two objects in the night sky. NGC 105’s elongated neighbour is actually far more distant and remains relatively unknown to astronomers. These misleading conjunctions occur frequently in astronomy — for example, the stars in constellations are at vastly different distances from Earth, and only appear to form patterns thanks to the chance alignment of their component stars. The Wide Field Camera 3 observations in this image are from a vast collection of Hubble measurements examining nearby galaxies which contain two fascinating astronomical phenomena — Cepheid variables and cataclysmic supernova explosions. Whilst these two phenomena may appear to be unrelated — one is a peculiar class of pulsating stars and the other is the explosion caused by the catastrophic final throes of a massive star’s life — they are both used by astronomers for a very particular purpose: measuring the vast distances to astronomical objects. Both Cepheids and supernovae have very predictable luminosities, meaning that astronomers can tell precisely how bright they are. By measuring how bright they appear when observed from Earth, these “standard candles” can provide reliable distance measurements. NGC 105 contains both supernovae and Cepheid variables, giving astronomers a valuable opportunity to calibrate the two distance measurement techniques against one another. Astronomers recently carefully analysed the distances to a sample of galaxies including NGC 105 to measure how fast the Universe is expanding — a value known as the Hubble constant. Their results don’t agree with the predictions of the most widely-accepted cosmological model, and their analysis shows that there is only a 1-in-a-million chance that this discrepancy was caused by measurement errors. This discrepancy between galaxy measurements and cosmological predictions has been a long-standing source of consternation for astronomers, and these recent findings provide persuasive new evidence that something is either wrong or lacking in our standard model of cosmology.

Brick Lane, by Monica Ali, tells the story of a woman named Nazneen, who comes from a Bangladeshi village. She was born premature and her mother did not take her to a doctor, preferring to let Allah decide whether she would live or die. This story was told to her throughout her childhood in Bangladesh. This attitude was imprinted on Nazneen at a young age and the story revolves around her escaping this mental straitjacket. Obeying the traditions of her culture, Nazneen at the age of 18 betrothed to a Bengali man named Chanu that her parents choose for her and is forced to move to London with him. In London, Nazneen feels out of place and lonely, until she meets a man with whom she falls madly in love with. She decides to push fate aside and take control of her own life, by making the choice to start a relationship with this man behind her family's back. Nazneen finally begins to discover the attachment she feels toward her family and the hardships this sense of freedom brings to her. The book nicely displays Nazeen's development and shows how she grows as a character. In the beginning of the novel Nazneen is very shy, naive, and over powered, but towards the end she becomes much stronger and much more in-charge of her live. In the background of the story is the pre and post 9/11 lives of Muslim immigrants in the west provided from Nazneen's perspective.
From the moment I began to read this novel, I was absorbed into the life of Nazneen. Ali's descriptive writing makes one feel as if they alongside the character, going through her struggles and feeling her pain. I recommend this novel to readers who enjoy moving love stories, learning about new cultures, and experiencing the emotions of life. I very much enjoyed Monica Ali's cunning sense of metaphors, and her play on ideas. Monica has the power to make her audience physically sense her writing. I could smell the spices and feel Nazneen's disgust when observing Chanu's sloppiness. I had a difficult time putting it down, BUT there were parts that were somewhat dry, specially the letters :o( I loved how the details of London street-life are colored by Nazneen's lack of experience with the modern world. Brick Lane didn't wrap me up like some books do but the food descriptions made me very hungry, I rummaged through my freezer quite a few times and devoured samosas while reading this book :)
The Namesake and Interpreter of Maladies are good books by Jhumpa Lahiri , very touching and quite true to the reality that immigrants and children of immigrants from any nationality have to face.

Sun Temple, Konark,Odisha was built by Eastern Ganga King Narasimhadeva 1(1238-64) to enshrine the image of Sun God. He entire complex was designed in the form of a huge chariot drawn by seven spirited horses on twelve pairs of exquisitely carved wheels. The sanctum symbolises the majestic stride of Sun God and marks the culmination of the Orissan archilectural style. The Vimana of the deol has collapsed, while that of jagamohana and the nata mandapa are well preserved. The walls of the temple contain superb carving of divine, semi-divine and animal figures among floral and geometric ornamentations. He vivacious kanyas danseuses are remarkable for their sensuous modelling pulsating with human emotions which are absorbed in a variety of gestures and rhythmic actions. Such sculptures render the Orissan temple a class unto themselves. Mighty simha -gajas welcome the visitor at the porches.

I don't drink often, and typically never alone. On this day, however, as I was battling the throbbing, pulsating pain of an inner ear infection, I opted to have a Margarita.
After determining the active ingredient in that Margarita was having a positive effect on the pain in my head, I had two more and thought I had been miraculously cured.
The airplane ride home snapped me back to reality.

London streets at night pulsate with a unique energy, transforming from bustling avenues to shimmering canvases of light and shadow. The iconic red busses weave through a tapestry of illuminated shop windows, each a kaleidoscope of colors vying for attention. Neon signs cast their vibrant glow onto cobbled alleys, while the River Thames reflects the city's illuminated silhouette like a liquid mirror.

Mist is a phenomenon caused by small droplets of water suspended in air. It can occur as part of natural weather or volcanic activity, and is common in cold air above warmer water, in exhaled air in the cold, and in a steam room of a sauna. It can also be created artificially with aerosol canisters if the humidity conditions are right.
The only difference between mist and fog is visibility. This phenomenon is called fog if the visibility is one kilometre (1,100 yards) or less (in the UK for driving purposes the definition of fog is visibility less than 200 metres, for pilots the distance is 1 kilometre). Otherwise it is known as mist. Seen from a distance, mist is bluish, and haze is more brownish.
Mist makes a beam of light visible from the side via refraction and reflection on the suspended water droplets.
Mist usually occurs near the shores, and is often associated with fog. Mist can be as high as mountain tops when extreme temperatures are low.

The entrance to Crabtree is marked by the Bolton Arch, a permanent reminder that the land was once part of the Hackwood Estate. This was once a impressive classical arch that led into the grounds owned by the Duke of Bolton, a title held by the Paulet family in the 18th and 19th Century. After Basing House had fallen and been destroyed by Cromwell’s troops, the Paulet family made the Hackwood Estate their main residence. The construction of the M3 divided Crabtree and the rest of the Hackwood estate and the arch fell into decline. No longer in private hands, the area is now managed by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council.
A fish pond is a controlled pond, artificial lake, or reservoir that is stocked with fish and is used in aquaculture for fish farming, or is used for recreational fishing or for ornamental purposes. In the medieval European era it was typical for monasteries and castles (small, partly self-sufficient communities) to have a fish pond.
During the winter, supplying fresh food for a castle garrison was a constant struggle. Although meat would be available from deer parks, this couldn't supply the needs of the whole household. A fish pond provided an elegant solution. As long as there was a natural flow of water into the pond, fish required no feeding and were available all year round. There would usually be a series of ponds, with fish being moved between them as they grew. This water flows into the River Loddon.
A recent addition to the bottom of Crabtree is a the children’s play area. This includes a zip line, climbing frame and swings. Its open location also means that the site is a popular location for kite flyers.
Above the trees to the left shine some of the bright stars of the constellation of Orion which is a prominent constellation located on the celestial equator and visible throughout the world. It is one of the most conspicuous and recognizable constellations in the night sky. It was named after Orion, a hunter in Greek mythology. Its brightest stars are Rigel (Beta Orionis) (Shineing through the tree branches). and Betelgeuse (Alpha Orionis), a blue-white and a red supergiant respectively. Many of the other brighter stars in the constellation are hot, blue supergiant stars. The three stars in the middle of the constellation form an asterism known as Orion's belt. The Orion Nebula (the misty patch above the trees) is located south of Orion's belt.
Rigel is the brightest star in the constellation Orion and the seventh brightest star in the night sky, with visual magnitude 0.12. The star as seen from Earth is actually a triple star system, with the primary star (Rigel A) a blue-white supergiant of absolute magnitude −7.84 and around 130,000 times as luminous as the Sun. An Alpha Cygni variable, it pulsates periodically. Visible in small telescopes, Rigel B is itself a spectroscopic binary system, consisting of two main sequence blue-white stars of spectral type B9.
Although Rigel has the Bayer designation "beta", it is almost always brighter than Alpha Orionis (Betelgeuse). Since 1943, the spectrum of this star has served as one of the stable anchor points by which other stars are classified.
Only two of the stars in Orions belt are visible in this crop. The asterism in the constellation Orion. It consists of the three bright stars Alnitak (the one missing), Alnilam and Mintaka.
Looking for Orion's Belt in the night sky is the easiest way to locate the constellation Orion in the sky. The stars are more or less evenly spaced in a straight line, and so can be visualized as the belt of the hunter's clothing. In the Northern hemisphere, they are best visible in the early night sky during the winter, in particular the month of January at around 9.00 pm.
Alnilam (Epsilon Orionis) is approximately 1340 light years away from earth and shines with magnitude 1.70. Considering ultraviolet light Alnilam is 375,000 times more luminous than the Sun. It is a large blue supergiant star in the constellation of Orion. Its Flamsteed designation is 46 Orionis.
It is the 30th brightest star in the sky (the 4th brightest in Orion) and is a blue-white supergiant. Together with Mintaka and Alnitak, the three stars make up the belt of Orion, known by many names across many ancient cultures. Alnilam is the middle star.
Since 1943, the spectrum of this star has served as one of the stable anchor points by which other stars are classified. It is also one of the 57 stars used in celestial navigation. It is at its highest point in the sky around midnight on December 15.
Alnilam's relatively simple spectrum has made it useful for studying the interstellar medium. Within the next million years, this star may turn into a red supergiant and explode as a supernova. It is surrounded by a molecular cloud, NGC 1990, which it brightens to make a reflection nebula. Its stellar winds may reach up to 2000 km/s, causing it to lose mass about 20 million times more rapidly than the Sun.
Mintaka pronounced MIN-ta-ka. Mintaka (Delta Orionis) is 915 light years away and shines with magnitude 2.21. Mintaka is 90,000 times more luminous than the Sun. Mintaka is a double star. Both stars orbit around each other every 5.73 days.
The Orion Nebula (also known as Messier 42, M42, or NGC 1976) is a diffuse nebula situated south of Orion's Belt. It is one of the brightest nebulae, and is visible to the naked eye in the night sky. M42 is located at a distance of 1,344 ± 20 light years and is the closest region of massive star formation to Earth. The M42 nebula is estimated to be 24 light years across. It has a mass of about 2000 times the mass of the Sun. Older texts frequently refer to the Orion Nebula as the Great Nebula in Orion or the Great Orion Nebula.
The Orion Nebula is one of the most scrutinized and photographed objects in the night sky, and is among the most intensely studied celestial features. The nebula has revealed much about the process of how stars and planetary systems are formed from collapsing clouds of gas and dust. Astronomers have directly observed protoplanetary disks, brown dwarfs, intense and turbulent motions of the gas, and the photo-ionizing effects of massive nearby stars in the nebula. There are also supersonic "bullets" of gas piercing the hydrogen clouds of the Orion Nebula. Each bullet is ten times the diameter of Pluto's orbit and tipped with iron atoms glowing bright blue. They were probably formed one thousand years ago from an unknown violent event.

Nature One 2016 is one of Europe's biggest open-air electronic festivals, and has been bringing the world's very best DJs to Germany since 1996.
Transforming a former NATO missile base into a huge, industrial dancefloor, ravers will party for three days and nights to house, techno, trance and more. 2015's lineup included Axwell ^ Ingrosso, Adam Beyer and Fedde Le Grand.
Curated by labels and promoters from across Germany, Switzerland, Belgium and the Netherlands, Nature One's cross-genre showcase has made it one of the continent's most popular destinations for electronic music lovers.
OPEN AIR FLOOR
It’s this very special moment on the Sunday morning: bang on time for the set of DJ legend Dag the sun cautiously climbs over the horizon. The OpenAirFloor has seen two fantastic nights. Mind-blowing acts, elated crowd, awesome light-LED-laser-pyro-flame shows, stunning sound – in a nutshell: total rave! And yet the last two hours are a truly very special highlight of each and every NATURE ONE.
From all the floors they converge here for the final dance together. They’ve just been dancing away to house, gabbering to hardcore and tripping to techno. CENTURY CIRCUS
Century Circus: the engine room of Nature One 2016. “Full speed ahead” comes the command. The turbines run unceasingly at their full power of 200,000 watts. It’s hot and it’s steamy. Everything is pulsating, reverberating, heaving. Deep pumping basses pound stoically out of all membranes.
Luminescent diodes warn of system overload. Enough power is produced here to keep the entire “Pydna” battleship on course. The fuel: your inexhaustible energy. Unleashed by the maestri of overdrive: Sven Väth and Chris Liebing, Adam Beyer and Klaudia Gawlas. The destination: 100% techno – and pure passion.
Nature One 2016 is the best time of the year. And if a cold wind does at some point blow through your life, the red dancing flames will warm your heart.
Today, tomorrow – for ever.
HOUSE OF HOUSE
In the beginning there was a certain Jack. And Jack had the groove. He said: “Let There Be House!” – and house music was born. House has long since matured into adulthood. And house is on all the channels, speaks all languages. House has already been in bed with hip hop, with pop, with hard rock, with indie and 80s – but always with feel.
Given their performance to packed-out crowds all night long last year, Robin Schulz’s label “Tonspiel” and his crew will be taking centre stage on the Friday. The Saturday will see a wild reunion with AKA AKA ft. Thalstroem, Moonbootica, Butch and Tom Novy. The happy end will be provided by the man who gave us the track “Björn Borkenkäfer”: Dominik Eulberg.
CLASSIC TERMINAL
This is where time stands still but everything else is moving. Feelings of happiness burst forth uncontrollably. Music as the conveyor of emotions. “Hardcore Vibes” for everybody. “Wonderful Days” for each and every one. “Tears Don’t Lie” – tears of joy do neither. “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” there’s room for everyone who knew how to really party at the time – and hasn’t forgotten how to.
All those who were sadly unable to experience the joyful first days of techno and happy hardcore, of hands-up and trance, can do so here: the Classic Terminal will beam you back in time to when techno was still spelt with three “ks”. And when gas masks, whistles and neon legwarmers were part of the basic rave outfit.
THE CLUBS
Techno pulsating to 1,000 cubic metres of bass in the bunkers. House in the hills under 10,000 stars. Trance, hardcore, drum’n’bass – the entire gamut of electronic music. On 19 totally different club floors. Just about enough room for 200 people on this one and for over 1,000 on that one. One floor with strobes and fog puristic to the core, the other with state-of-the-art light and LED systems.
At the mixers: DJ heroes, newcomers and the best residents from Hamburg, Berlin and Frankfurt. From Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland and the Netherlands. Communication problems? There aren’t any. Music is the common tongue. Underground and club culture the passion. Enter the club world – at Nature One 2016!

This morning, 16 June 2014, Etna continues erupting from its New Southeast Crater, beautifully and harmlessly. This latest episode of volcanic activity is not a typical paroxysm (such events are usually much shorter and much more violent), but a repetition of similar episodes on 14-16 December and on 29-31 December 2013. There is lava outflow feeding a multilobed flow to the southeast, and pulsating lava fountains from three vents at the summit of the New Southeast Crater cone, which is again growing.
The view here is from my home in the village of Tremestieri Etneo, 20 km south of the summit of Etna.

This image is a testament to the city's ability to seamlessly blend tradition with modernity, creating an unforgettable visual tapestry that is uniquely Dubai.
While surely we’ll still chum around and admire each other’s work after this, lets be clear that this Iron Builder competition between me and Guy Himber is a battle. We are two well known talented builders with formidable reputations and wits to match. In order to compete against the likes of my friend Guy one would need a legendary warrior with a powerful disposition.
I present to you Ajax The Great! He is a centaur...the most legendary of the mystical beasts and his very name means “greatest warrior” in Greek. He wears a Hoplite helmet and armor and carries a spear and shield. While mostly white, he is adorned with coppery elements that serve as a salute to my competitor’s Steampunk leanings. His form uses a staggering 54 of the 1x6x3 1/3 white curved arch elements required in accordance with the Iron Builder competition. He is also endowed with...um...lets just say...Hurculean attributes designed specifically to intimidate my friend and competitor. And by Hurculean attributes I mean his big...hard...throbbing...vein laden...monstrous...pulsating...unrelenting...biceps! He’s got two tickets to the “gun show” and both guns and all four hooves are going to be used to turn Guy Himber into pulp!
While Guy resorts to creating fake profiles and padding his own images with his own comments in order to create the illusion of popularity, I rely solely on heart, artistry, strength, skill...and the undying adoration of You The People. You have quickly made my first entry one of my most popular and talked about creations of all time and I am certain that this centaur will fare just as well. I thank you, in advance, my friends for your comments, faves, and praise for it is through my win that your voices will be heard.

In a closed, warm space, she gently turns up her headphones and steps into a musical labyrinth created by the latest tracks from Burning Man 2023. She closes her eyes and lets herself be carried away by the pulsating rhythms and fluid tones, reminiscent of the unforgettable festival in the Nevada desert.
Here, in the glow of a dim, soft lamp, she is away from the cold, dark world outside. Her feet move in time with the music, and she feels connected to the vast landscapes and colorful characters from Burning Man. It's an inner journey, a tribute to camaraderie, and the power of music to create warmth in the midst of winter's chill.
In this moment, her world is filled with light and sound, as if summer never left her. She dances as if no one is watching, letting the music transport her back to the moments shared with friends under the stars in the Nevada desert. It's the dance of darkness, a way to preserve the magic of summer in the heart of winter.
In winter's embrace, she dances alone,
With Burning Man's echoes in her headphones known.
Memories of summer, still vivid and clear,
In closed spaces, where the heart finds its frontier.
Her feet follow the rhythm, just like before,
In the embrace of music, summer's reborn once more.

The flight arrived on time; and the twelve hours while on board passed quickly and without incident. To be sure, the quality of the Cathay Pacific service was exemplary once again.
Heathrow reminds me of Newark International. The décor comes straight out of the sterile 80's and is less an eyesore than an insipid background to the rhythm of human activity, such hustle and bustle, at the fore. There certainly are faces from all races present, creating a rich mosaic of humanity which is refreshing if not completely revitalizing after swimming for so long in a sea of Chinese faces in Hong Kong.
Internet access is sealed in England, it seems. Nothing is free; everything is egregiously monetized from the wireless hotspots down to the desktop terminals. I guess Hong Kong has spoiled me with its abundant, free access to the information superhighway.

Despite staying in a room with five other backpackers, I have been sleeping well. The mattress and pillow are firm; my earplugs keep the noise out; and the sleeping quarters are as dark as a cave when the lights are out, and only as bright as, perhaps, a dreary rainy day when on. All in all, St. Paul's is a excellent place to stay for the gregarious, adventurous, and penurious city explorer - couchsurfing may be a tenable alternative; I'll test for next time.
Yesterday Connie and I gorged ourselves at the borough market where there were all sorts of delectable, savory victuals. There was definitely a European flavor to the food fair: simmering sausages were to be found everywhere; and much as the meat was plentiful, and genuine, so were the dairy delicacies, in the form of myriad rounds of cheese, stacked high behind checkered tabletops. Of course, we washed these tasty morsels down with copious amounts of alcohol that flowed from cups as though amber waterfalls. For the first time I tried mulled wine, which tasted like warm, rancid fruit punch - the ideal tonic for a drizzling London day, I suppose. We later killed the afternoon at the pub, shooting the breeze while imbibing several diminutive half-pints in the process. Getting smashed at four in the afternoon doesn't seem like such a bad thing anymore, especially when you are having fun in the company of friends; I can more appreciate why the English do it so much!
Earlier in the day, we visited the Tate Modern. Its turbine room lived up to its prominent billing what with a giant spider, complete with bulbous egg sac, anchoring the retrospective exhibit. The permanent galleries, too, were a delight upon which to feast one's eyes. Picasso, Warhol and Pollock ruled the chambers of the upper floors with the products of their lithe wrists; and I ended up becoming a huge fan of cubism, while developing a disdain for abstract art and its vacuous images, which, I feel, are devoid of both motivation and emotion.
My first trip yesterday morning was to Emirates Stadium, home of the Arsenal Gunners. It towers imperiously over the surrounding neighborhood; yet for all its majesty, the place sure was quiet! Business did pick up later, however, once the armory shop opened, and dozens of fans descended on it like bees to a hive. I, too, swooped in on a gift-buying mission, and wound up purchasing a book for Godfrey, a scarf for a student, and a jersey - on sale, of course - for good measure.
I'm sitting in the Westminster Abbey Museum now, resting my weary legs and burdened back. So far, I've been verily impressed with what I've seen, such a confluence of splendor and history before me that it would require days to absorb it all, when regretfully I can spare only a few hours. My favorite part of the abbey is the poets corner where no less a literary luminary than Samuel Johnson rests in peace - his bust confirms his homely presence, which was so vividly captured in his biography.
For lunch I had a steak and ale pie, served with mash, taken alongside a Guinness, extra cold - 2 degrees centigrade colder, the bartender explained. It went down well, like all the other delicious meals I've had in England; and no doubt by now I have grown accustomed to inebriation at half past two. Besides, Liverpool were playing inspired football against Blackburn; and my lunch was complete.
Having had my fill of football, I decided to skip my ticket scalping endeavor at Stamford Bridge and instead wandered over to the British Museum to inspect their extensive collections. Along the way, my eye caught a theater, its doors wide open and admitting customers. With much rapidity, I subsequently checked the show times, saw that a performance was set to begin, and at last rushed to the box office to purchase a discounted ticket - if you call a 40 pound ticket a deal, that is. That's how I grabbed a seat to watch Hairspray in the West End.
The show was worth forty pounds. The music was addictive; and the stage design and effects were not so much kitschy as delightfully stimulating - the pulsating background lights were at once scintillating and penetrating. The actors as well were vivacious, oozing charisma while they danced and delivered lines dripping in humor. Hairspray is a quality production and most definitely recommended.
12.4.09
At breakfast I sat across from a man who asked me to which country Hong Kong had been returned - China or Japan. That was pretty funny. Then he started spitting on my food as he spoke, completely oblivious to my breakfast becoming the receptacle in which the fruit of his inner churl was being placed. I guess I understand the convention nowadays of covering one's mouth whilst speaking and masticating at the same time!
We actually conversed on London life in general, and I praised London for its racial integration, the act of which is a prodigious leap of faith for any society, trying to be inclusive, accepting all sorts of people. It wasn't as though the Brits were trying in vain to be all things to all men, using Spanish with the visitors from Spain, German with the Germans and, even, Hindi with the Indians, regardless of whether or not Hindi was their native language; not even considering the absurd idea of encouraging the international adoption of their language; thereby completely keeping English in English hands and allowing its proud polyglots to "practice" their languages. Indeed, the attempt of the Londoners to avail themselves of the rich mosaic of ethnic knowledge, and to seek a common understanding with a ubiquitous English accent is an exemplar, and the bedrock for any world city.
I celebrated Jesus' resurrection at the St. Andrew's Street Church in Cambridge. The parishioners of this Baptist church were warm and affable, and I met several of them, including one visiting (Halliday) linguistics scholar from Zhongshan university in Guangzhou, who in fact had visited my tiny City University of Hong Kong in 2003. The service itself was more traditional and the believers fewer in number than the "progressive" services at any of the charismatic, evangelical churches in HK; yet that's what makes this part of the body of Christ unique; besides, the message was as brief as a powerpoint slide, and informative no less; the power word which spoke into my life being a question from John 21:22 - what is that to you?
Big trees; exquisite lawns; and old, pointy colleges; that's Cambridge in a nutshell. Sitting here, sipping on a half-pint of Woodforde's Wherry, I've had a leisurely, if not languorous, day so far; my sole duty consisting of walking around while absorbing the verdant environment as though a sponge, camera in tow.
I am back at the sublime beer, savoring a pint of Sharp's DoomBar before my fish and chips arrive; the drinking age is 18, but anyone whose visage even hints of youthful brilliance is likely to get carded these days, the bartender told me. The youth drinking culture here is almost as twisted as the university drinking culture in America.
My stay in Cambridge, relaxing and desultory as it may be, is about to end after this late lunch. I an not sure if there is anything left to see, save for the American graveyard which rests an impossible two miles away. I have had a wonderful time in this town; and am thankful for the access into its living history - the residents here must demonstrate remarkable patience and tolerance what with so many tourists ambling on the streets, peering - and photographing - into every nook and cranny.
13.4.09
There are no rubbish bins, yet I've seen on the streets many mixed race couples in which the men tend to be white - the women also belonging to a light colored ethnicity, usually some sort of Asian; as well saw some black dudes and Indian dudes with white chicks.
People here hold doors, even at the entrance to the toilet. Sometimes it appears as though they are going out on a limb, just waiting for the one who will take the responsibility for the door from them, at which point I rush out to relieve them of such a fortuitous burden.
I visited the British Museum this morning. The two hours I spent there did neither myself nor the exhibits any justice because there really is too much to survey, enough captivating stuff to last an entire day, I think. The bottomless well of artifacts from antiquity, drawing from sources as diverse as Korea, and Mesopotamia, is a credit to the British empire, without whose looting most of this amazing booty would be unavailable for our purview; better, I think, for these priceless treasures to be open to all in the grandest supermarket of history than away from human eyes, and worst yet, in the hands of unscrupulous collectors or in the rubbish bin, possibly.
Irene and I took in the ballet Giselle at The Royal Opera House in the afternoon. The building is a plush marvel, and a testament to this city's love for the arts. The ballet itself was satisfying, the first half being superior to the second, in which the nimble dancers demonstrated their phenomenal dexterity in, of all places, a graveyard covered in a cloak of smoke and darkness. I admit, their dance of the dead, in such a gloomy necropolis, did strike me as, strange.
Two amicable ladies from Kent convinced me to visit their hometown tomorrow, where, they told me, the authentic, "working" Leeds Castle and the mighty interesting home of Charles Darwin await.
I'm nursing a pint of Green King Ruddles and wondering about the profusion of British ales and lagers; the British have done a great deed for the world by creating an interminable line of low-alcohol session beers that can be enjoyed at breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner; and their disservice is this: besides this inexhaustible supply of cheap beer ensnaring my inner alcoholic, I feel myself putting on my freshman fifteen, almost ten years after the fact; I am going to have to run a bit harder back in Hong Kong if I want to burn all this malty fuel off.
Irene suggested I stop by the National Art Gallery since we were in the area; and it was an hour well spent. The gallery currently presents a special exhibit on Picasso, the non-ticketed section of which features several seductive renderings, including David spying on Bathsheba - repeated in clever variants - and parodies of other masters' works. Furthermore, the main gallery houses two fabulous portraits by Joshua Reynolds, who happens to be favorite of mine, he in life being a close friend of Samuel Johnson - I passed by Boswells, where its namesake first met Johnson, on my way to the opera house.

I prayed last night, and went through my list, lifting everyone on it up to the Lord. That felt good; that God is alive now, and ever present in my life and in the lives of my brothers and sisters.
Doubtless, then, I have felt quite wistful, as though a specter in the land of the living, being in a place where religious fervor, it seems, is a thing of the past, a trifling for many, to be hidden away in the opaque corners of centuries-old cathedrals that are more expensive tourist destinations than liberating homes of worship these days. Indeed, I have yet to see anyone pray, outside of the Easter service which I attended in Cambridge - for such an ecstatic moment in verily a grand church, would you believe that it was only attended by at most three dozen spirited ones. The people of England, and Europe in general, have, it is my hope, only locked away the Word, relegating it to the quiet vault of their hearts. May it be taken out in the sudden pause before mealtimes and in the still crisp mornings and cool, silent nights. There is still hope for a revival in this place, for faith to rise like that splendid sun every morning. God would love to rescue them, to deliver them in this day, it is certain.
I wonder what Londoners think, if anything at all, about their police state which, like a vine in the shadows, has taken root in all corners of daily life, from the terrorist notifications in the underground, which implore Londoners to report all things suspicious, to the pair of dogs which eagerly stroll through Euston. What makes this all the more incredible is the fact that even the United States, the indomitable nemesis of the fledgling, rebel order, doesn't dare bombard its citizens with such fear mongering these days, especially with Obama in office; maybe we've grown wise in these past few years to the dubious returns of surrendering civil liberties to the state, of having our bags checked everywhere - London Eye; Hairspray; and The Royal Opera House check bags in London while the museums do not; somehow, that doesn't add up for me.
I'm in a majestic bookshop on New Street in Birmingham, and certainly to confirm my suspicions, there are just as many books on the death of Christianity in Britain as there are books which attempt to murder Christianity everywhere. I did find, however, a nice biography on John Wesley by Roy Hattersley and The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis. I may pick up the former.
Lunch with Sally was pleasant and mirthful. We dined at a French restaurant nearby New Street - yes, Birmingham is a cultural capitol! Sally and I both tried their omelette, while her boyfriend had the fish, without chips. Conversation was light, the levity was there and so was our reminiscing about those fleeting moments during our first year in Hong Kong; it is amazing how friendships can resume so suddenly with a smile. On their recommendation, I am on my way to Warwick Castle - they also suggested that I visit Cadbury World, but they cannot take on additional visitors at the moment, the tourist office staff informed me, much to my disappointment!
Visiting Warwick Castle really made for a great day out. The castle, parts of which were established by William the Conquerer in 1068, is as much a kitschy tourist trap as a meticulous preservation of history, at times a sillier version of Ocean Park while at others a dignified dedication to a most glorious, inexorably English past. The castle caters to all visitors; and not surprisingly, that which delighted all audiences was a giant trebuchet siege engine, which for the five p.m. performance hurled a fireball high and far into the air - fantastic! Taliban beware!
15.4.09
I'm leaving on a jet plane this evening; don't know when I'll be back in England again. I'll miss this quirky, yet endearing place; and that I shall miss Irene and Tom who so generously welcomed me into their home, fed me, and suffered my use of their toilet and shower goes without saying. I'm grateful for God's many blessings on this trip.
On the itinerary today is a trip to John Wesley's home, followed by a visit to the Imperial War Museum. Already this morning I picked up a tube of Oilatum, a week late perhaps, which Teri recommended I use to treat this obstinate, dermal weakness of mine - I'm happy to report that my skin has stopped crying.
John Wesley's home is alive and well. Services are still held in the chapel everyday; and its crypt, so far from being a cellar for the dead, is a bright, spacious museum in which all things Wesley are on display - I never realized how much of an iconic figure he became in England; at the height of this idol frenzy, ironic in itself, he must have been as popular as the Beatles were at their apex. The house itself is a multi-story edifice with narrow, precipitous staircases and spacious rooms decorated in an 18th century fashion.
I found Samuel Johnson's house within a maze of red brick hidden alongside Fleet Street. To be in the home of the man who wrote the English dictionary, and whose indefatigable love for obscure words became the inspiration for my own lexical obsession, this, by far, is the climax of my visit to England! The best certainly has been saved for last.
There are a multitude of portraits hanging around the house like ornaments on a tree. Every likeness has its own story, meticulously retold on the crib sheets in each room. Celebrities abound, including David Garrick and Sir Joshua Reynolds, who painted several of the finer images in the house. I have developed a particular affinity for Oliver Goldsmith, of whom Boswell writes, "His person was short, his countenance coarse and vulgar, his deportment that of a scholar awkwardly affecting the easy gentleman. It appears as though I, too, could use a more flattering description of myself!
I regretfully couldn't stop to try the curry in England; I guess the CityU canteen's take on the dish will have to do. I did, however, have the opportune task of flirting with the cute Cathay Pacific counter staff who checked me in. She was gorgeous in red, light powder on her cheeks, with real diamond earrings, she said; and her small, delicate face, commanded by a posh British accent rendered her positively irresistible, electrifying. Not only did she grant me an aisle seat but she had the gumption to return my fawning with zest; she must be a pro at this by now.
I saw her again as she was pulling double-duty, collecting tickets prior to boarding. She remembered my quest for curry; and in the fog of infatuation, where nary a man has been made, I fumbled my words like the sloppy kid who has had too much punch. I am just an amateur, alas, an "Oliver Goldsmith" with the ladies - I got no game - booyah!
Some final, consequential bits: because of the chavs, Burberry no longer sells those fashionable baseball caps; because of the IRA, rubbish bins are no longer a commodity on the streets of London, and as a result, the streets and the Underground of the city are a soiled mess; and because of other terrorists from distant, more arid lands, going through a Western airport has taken on the tedium of perfunctory procedure that doesn't make me feel any safer from my invisible enemies.
At last, I saw so many Indians working at Heathrow that I could have easily mistaken the place for Mumbai. Their presence surprised me because their portion of the general population surely must be less than their portion of Heathrow staff, indicating some mysterious hiring bias. Regardless, they do a superb job with cursory airport checks, and in general are absurdly funny and witty when not tactless.
That's all for England!

My name is Connor Queen. Following the death of my father Oliver, I discovered that he wasn’t who I thought he was. He was the saviour of Star City, a masked hero known as the Green Arrow. I intend to continue his mission of saving the innocent from those who do harm and fulfill his legacy; this is my story.
PREVIOUSLY: Connor has been captured by Onomatopoeia, and has been beaten and treated like an animal. When we last saw him, Onomatopoeia took a mysterious video then left Connor alone...
“Connor! Wake up! We’re here!”
I opened my eyes from a restless sleep and saw my mother kneeling before me. The ropes that bound me were suddenly slack, and John emerged from behind the beam I was tied to. I looked at them in amazement.
“How did you find me here?”
“We recieved a video of you, and someone said ‘Star City Rockets’,” mom explained, “and we went to check out the new stadium, but found nothing, so we knew it could only be this one; in truth, it was all too easy.”
I sprang to my feet, wincing with the effort it took after being tied up for a few days.
“It’s a trap,” I said quickly, “Onomatopoeia must’ve wanted you to come here for something.”
“I know that,” my mother responded, “but after careful consideration, we decided it would be worth it just to get you back.”
“Your facepaint is gone,” John jumped in, “does he know your identity?”
I felt my face go white and my eyes go wide.
“Oh, no...”
I reached back and put my hood up, then grabbed my bow and arrows from the floor where Onomatopoeia put them. I limped over to Mom and John.
“Let’s go. We need to get out of here.”
We made our way back through the stadium, slowed by my limp. As we came through the changerooms and out into the field, we were blinded by bright, pulsating lights. We put our hands above our eyes in order to see and there he was, standing in the field. He calmly started walking over to us.
“GET DOWN OR I WILL SHOOT!” John commanded in a military-like voice. Anger boiled through my blood. Whoever this sicko was, he was going to pay. I did my best to load my bow. He finally came over to the door and put his hands up.
“Before you kill me, I’d kindly ask you to let me say something.”
Immediatley my mother stepped forward in a protective gesture.
“What is it? It better be a good explaination of why you held my s–er, the Green Arrow hostage.”
With that he took off his mask, revealing the cold blue eyes, dirty blond hair, and general Queen look. To be honest, he kind of looked like my mother more than my father, now that there was more light on him.
My mother gasped and backed up, spooked by something. A sudden sense of danger ignited in me, and an ominous shadow seemed to pass over us all. What was it about this guy that startled her?
Onomatopoeia gave us a menacing grin that stretched from one side of his face to another. When he spoke, it was like hearing your death heading straight at you.
“Hello, mother.”
Mother? MOTHER? Who did he think he was. John stepped forward, pointing his gun at Onomatopoeia.
“I’m telling you, son, get down and surrender, or you’ll be full of lead.”
“Who are you?” I demanded. He sighed and started chuckling.
“Dinah never told you, did she?” He said to me. “When Oliver–your father–was on the island, she was heartbroken, but knew she would have to move on. So, she started dating a man by the name of Lawrence Blankset. One day she discovered she was pregnant with his child–me, good ol’ Quinn. However, soon after I was born her Beloved returned, and she left me for him, claiming she had never loved anyone else. So I grew up, seperate from a family that could’ve given me so much, instead living with my abusive SOB-of-a-father.”
We stared at him, dumbfounded. Immediatley I got a sick feeling in my stomach. This couldn’t be true. This guy was crazy.
“Mom?” I asked in a quiet voice. “Is this true?” She nodded, gulping. Onomatopoeia–he would never be anything else to me– extended his hand towards me.
“So, I guess that mean’s we’re step-brothers.”
I stumbled back, shaking my head. “No. No, we are not step brothers, and never will be. We are going to make you pay for everything you’ve done. You will face justice.”
He sighed again and looked at the ground, genuinely disappointed. Then he looked up at us, anger blazing in his eyes.
“Then I guess you’ve left me no choice.”
And then, with the speed of a cobra, he whipped out a pistol, shot my mom and took off into the night.

It is hardly possible to remain indifferent, to be untouched by the pulsating energy of the Maha Kumbh Mela. There is a strong sense of community among the gathering of few dozens of millions of people visiting and participating in this event. Despite hardships like extreme cold, basic infrastructure to survive, crowding, fear and occurrence of stampede, there is a sense of well being. Except for a few, each has one intent, bathing in the sacred confluence of rivers on the auspicious dates at a given time to wash away sins and gain a chance at a new beginning.
A crowd so massive that it is visible from space! Though not fortunate enough to observe it from space, my camp site located on top of a hillock presented an opportunity of fantastic bird's eye view of the entire arena and though within the fair ground, still away from the chaos. Rubbing shoulders with the modern day photography god's (the Nat Geo and BBC crew) must have had it's effect, because on opening the eyes in the wee hours of the morning felt like a goddess up in Mt. Olympia with the faint murmurs of prayers and chants coming from several feet down and distance! It was a mental tussle having to decide whether to enjoy the cozy cocoon inside the quilt or to let go, get ready and emerge from the tent to utilize the photographic opportunities. Few nano seconds later the pull of the photography wins.

Heron and the Bullfrog
artist Mr Prvrt aka Justin Suarez
++ ++ ++ ++ ++
To look at the American bullfrog on the side of Premier Pastry, pulsating with greens, yellows, and reds, you’d never guess that this is, in many ways, a new art form for its creator.
“I stenciled for 12 years straight, and that’s really what I’ve known,” said Mr. Prvrt, who is participating in Wall\Therapy for the second straight year. ”But with the layering of colors it’s still very stencil-like, and that’s really the look I’m going for, to almost try and fool people into thinking it is still stencil.”
About four months ago, in preparation for Wall\Therapy, Mr. Prvrt began working on his freehand spray-paint form, getting in a few practice runs while thinking about his concepts.
A few months ago, he collaborated with fellow Wall\Therapy artist Sarah C. Rutherford to paint a mural of a wolf and a deer along Pennsylvania Avenue, near the Public Market. For Wall\Therapy, he’s painting a heron and bullfrog on the side of Premier Pastry and a fox and rabbit on the side of SM Mini Mart. Both buildings are on South Avenue.
“We had started exploring some different themes of predator and prey juxtaposition,” he said. ”Not attacking each other or anything like that, but putting the two together seemed pretty appropriate. The heron was the first idea and then the frog was a pretty easy choice as to what a heron would eat. And then on the other side, the fox and the rabbit — same sort of theme.”
Mr. Prvrt, who is also part of the From Up Above (FUA) Krew, a collection of local graffiti artists, said that for his bullfrog/heron mural, he purposely didn’t prime the wall as much as he could have. That way, the mural will weather quickly and naturally, and will appear aged after a relatively short period of time.
“Hopefully, in three to five years, it’ll look like an old mural, like the various murals around town that were done 40 years ago are all worn and really seem like part of the building itself,” he said. ”It’s not that I don’t want it to look new, but I really like the environmental appeal of just having it fit into the space.”
Watch one of Mr. Prvrt’s murals come alive at www.democratandchronicle.com/walltherapy.
