DuPont family history traces back to sixteenth century

Family history is much like a seed.
It starts with a person planted in a particular spot and soon enough, it becomes deeply rooted in its community, connecting to things around it and creating a legacy.
Take the DuPont family for example.
In Florida, it starts with a man named Josiah DuPont, who was the first DuPont to settle in the state.
And for the last 30 years, his descendants have researched the family tree from one generation to the next.
Planted in Florida
St. Augustine natives Fred and Jim DuPont were born in the 1940s. They are two of their parents' six children and descendents of Josiah's brother, Charles DuPont.
Since 1980, they have compiled extensive research on the DuPont family history, pulling them all the way back to 16th century France.
"I started at the library up in Washington when I first got into it in 1980," Jim said. "I was always interested, but I didn't have the time to research it until I got to Washington."
Their research revealed the DuPont name appeared in the Huguenot stronghold of Rouen, France.
After facing persecution, Abraham DuPont fled to London, where he became a British subject, allowing him to immigrate to what is now the United States.
Born in 1658, he settled down in New York in 1699 and married.
Abraham's grandson Josiah is who Fred and Jim found to be the first to arrive in Florida based on copies of Spanish land grants that dated back to the 1790s.
He and his family tried to settle on the lands provided by the grants but were driven off by Native Americans in 1801.
The following year, Josiah died from a fever leaving all of his land in Florida to be regranted.
Charles, Josiah's brother, had 11 children.
One of them was named Abraham, born in 1783.
In 1828, Abraham and his family moved to St. Augustine, where he died in 1857.
"We've been here ever since," Fred said.
Abraham was active in the St. Augustine community.
He owned properties that extended to the south from what is now the Flagler County line to the north end of Hammock and from the ocean to the Matanzas River.
He owned acres on the other side of the Matanzas River bordered by Pellicer Creek.
He also owned a house in St. Augustine that is near where Price's Barbershop is today.
Abraham was on the building committee for the Trinity Episcopal Church in 1830 and went on to be the mayor of St. Augustine in from 1842 to 1843.
Deepening the Roots
In research done in 2013, Fred and Jim explored the development of the DuPont Center.
It sits on some land remaining of the Spanish land grant and is at the intersection of U.S. 1 and County Road 206.
According to the two's research, the DuPont Center was originally a farm that was created when Cornelius DuPont, grandson of Abraham, and his wife purchased 40 acres of land in the 1900s.
Subsequently, the couple purchased 120 acres, for a total of 160 acres.
The farm was on both sides of what is now U.S. 1.
It got its name when Cornelius and his wife donated the right of way to the government for the highway to be expanded.
After the intersection was established as the DuPont Center, the family decided that gas stations, restaurants and a roadhouse were more profitable options than farming.
That area became a place for travelers to get gas, fill their bellies or even attend a Saturday night dance during the 1940s and 1950s.
"I can remember going there with my parents and the kids would be running around and the parents would be inside and it would be a great time," Fred said.
In 1947, W.D. DuPont Sr. and his two sons, Andrew and William, founded W.D. DuPont and Sons Construction Co.
W.D. retired in 1959 at the same time the company purchased 120 acres of land to build a factory for the manufacturing of DuPont Steel Buildings and to farm.
In 1970, as W.D. celebrated his birthday, family tragedy struck and his wife suddenly died of an aneurism.
That same year, his son was killed in a plane crash at the St. Augustine Airport, and W.D. died from what his relatives say was a broken heart.
W.D. and Sons folded in the late 1980s and the county bought the property.
Growing up with History
Many of the DuPont family members have good memories of their upbringing.
"It was a great way to grow up. We were all one big family, and we had our own identity," Fred said.
As a kid, he remembers 160 acres was divided among the family.
Beehives and sugar cane were grown on the property.
"When it was time to harvest, the whole family would go out there," Fred said. "Every year, the family was provided with cane sugar and honey."
Chris Delaporte is a DuPont descendent and said growing up DuPont gave him a sense of heritage.
"I was born in Orlando, but my earliest recollection of the DuPont family was going to Crescent Beach to visit my grandparents," he said. "All those great memories of hunting and fishing were with my family."
He said keeping track of the family history is key and he serves as president of the family's council. His mother is one of the oldest in the family.
"(We) create a legacy and something our heirs and the people who came behind us will have," he said. "The word-of-mouth thing can only go so far."
Jim said researching the family's history with his brother works out well for the both of them, and they're able to retain the memories.
"I've always believed you can only see as far ahead of you as you can see back, so I've been looking back, back, back," he said.
Fred says everyone still manages to keep in touch.
"All the families in the area come together and stay in touch with each other," he said.

Billie Joe Armstrong e compagni salgono sul palco dell’Ippodromo La Maura il 15 giugno 2022 per dimostrare che la loro voglia di punk e chitarre è ancora quella – almeno così pare – di quei ragazzi cresciuti in un noioso paesino vicino a Berkeley (San Francisco) e capaci però di trovare la formula vincente per catapultare il punk nei Novanta.
I Green Day hanno rivoluzionato il panorama rock mainstream fondendo l’estetica ribelle del punk con una coinvolgente sensibilità melodica che strizza l’occhio all’immediatezza del pop.
Nati nella seconda metà degli anni ’80 su iniziativa di Billie Joe Armstrong e Mike Dirnt, muovono i primi passi nella scena underground californiana, debuttando nel 1990 con 39/Smooth. Nel 1994, Dookie li proietta in vetta alle classifiche internazionali. Nel 2004, il concept sociopolitico di American Idiot segna l’approdo a nuovi vertici creativi, affiancando i toni aggressivi e dissacranti della title track al carattere intimista di ‘Wake Me Up When September Ends’. Raggiunto ormai uno status emblematico, il gruppo si conferma in forma smagliante a un lustro di distanza, con le tematiche personali di 21st Century Breakdown. Anche l’ingresso nella Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (2015) non frena la voglia di esplorare inediti orizzonti creativi, come certificato nel 2020 dalle sfumature glam di Father of All Motherfuckers.

This photograph was published in the Illustrated Chronicle on the 5th of May 1917.
During the Great War the Illustrated Chronicle published photographs of soldiers and sailors from Newcastle and the North East of England, which had been in the news. The photographs were sent in by relatives and give us a glimpse into the past.
The physical collection held by Newcastle Libraries comprises bound volumes of the newspaper from 1910 to 1925. We are keen to find out more about the people in the photographs. If you recognise anyone in the images and have any stories and information to add please comment below.

Today’s feature in our #ElginPlaces series is West Magdala!
This photograph shows the exterior of the West Magdala Creamery, with members of the Cranston family standing outside, ca. 1890. The photograph was published in the St. Thomas Times-Journal on May 9, 1963, with caption: “The Old West Magdala Creamery, situated on the Lawrence Road in Southwold Township, is being demolished and its removal will obliterate all evidence of a rural butter making industry that stretched back nearly 100 years. The picture shows the creamery with members of the family of the late Robert Cranston, early owner of the establishment.” Photograph is from the St. Thomas Times-Journal fonds.
This almost forgotten settlement is located east of Lawrence Station on Concession 2, Southwold Township. At the present time it consists only of a schoolhouse and a lovely old church. The business section of this small settlement never had more than a creamery, general store, post office, brickyard, church and school. Today it is just a quiet spot along the second concession with a few traces of the old creamery and McBride’s Church.
Of the early settlers who located on this concession were the two Irish brothers, Hugh and Samuel Lynn. Hugh Lynn settled on Lot 7, while Samuel located on Lot 8 in 1848.
The creamery was located on the south section of Samuel Lynn’s farm, now the Malcolm McArthur farm, and became known as the West Magdala Creamery. The creamery was founded by Warren Warner in 1871, and was sold to Robert Cranston four years later. Cranston operated the business until [1922?]. Andrew O. Imlay was the next proprietor and was in operation until 1951, when he closed the creamery due to ill health. After his death the creamery was never used again. Some years before it was dismantled, a fire occurred and the adjoining house and creamery were partially destroyed. The remaining buildings were removed by Malcolm McArthur and Dean Bogart on May 6, 1963.
The one and only general store and post office were on the northwest corner of Donald Turner’s property. Across the road from the post office was the Oneida school, as it was commonly called, or S.S. No. 3. The first school was built of logs in 1840, and was a one-room structure. By 1860, the log school began to show signs of decay. As a result, the senior room of S.S. No. 3 was built and opened in 1867 on the site. The log school was used for religious purposes until the erection of a church in 1876.

Ennio Morricone porta in Italia la tournée ‘The 60 Years of Music World Tour’ il 2 dicembre al Mediolanum Forum di Milano.
Ennio Morricone dirigerà le sue musiche per il cinema. Le date fanno parte della tournée The 60 Years of Music World Tour e prevedono l’esibizione della leggenda del fado portoghese, Dulce Pontes. I precedenti concerti della tournèe hanno registrato il tutto esaurito ovunque in Europa con standing ovation da parte del pubblico e recensioni magnifiche da parte della critica.
L’anno passato il maestro Morricone è stato insignito di numerosi premi e riconoscimenti per le musiche dell’ultimo film di Quentin Tarantino, The Hateful Eight tra cui ricordiamo il Golden Globe per ‘La migliore colonna sonora originale’, il BAFTA per ‘Le musiche Originali’, il premio della New York Film Critics Association per ‘La migliore colonna sonora’ e l’Oscar nella categoria ‘Colonna sonora originale.’
Nel corso della sua carriera, Ennio Morricone ha composto più di 500 colonne sonore per il cinema e la televisione e più di 100 composizioni di musica assoluta. Tra le sue opere più conosciute ricordiamo le musiche per il film C’era una volta il West, C’era una volta in America, Per un pugno di dollari, The Untouchables e Mission. Le musiche di Ennio Morricone per il film Il buono, il brutto e il cattivo occupano la seconda posizione in una classifica delle 200 migliori colonne sonore per il cinema della storia.
I concerti in Italia fanno parte di una tournée mondiale, che segna il sessantesimo anniversario come compositore e direttore d’orchestra e seguono una serie di date europee che hanno portato il maestro a esibirsi davanti a circa 400.000 persone in 30 diverse città europee.
Parlando della tournée attualmente in corso, Ennio Morricone ha dichiarato di recente: “Dirigere dal vivo le mie composizioni in tante città diverse, davanti ad un pubblico così vario per età e background culturale, è un’esperienza estremamente gratificante. Quest’anno festeggio i 60 anni di carriera da compositore durante i quali ho composto più di 600 opere”.
“Per questa tournée ho pensato a un programma aggiornato che naturalmente comprende alcuni “grandi classici” come le musiche degli amati western di Sergio Leone e Mission, ma a parte questo nella sua totalità il concerto sarà un’esperienza molto differente rispetto ai concerti del passato. Prevedo di inserire nel programma le musiche composte per Quentin Tarantino e alcuni brani composti per i western di Sergio Leone che non ho mai diretto nelle tournée precedenti. Inoltre, avrò accanto a me sul palco la cantante portoghese Dulce Pontes, espressione di una vocalità appassionata e passionale.

Unfortunately the article wasn’t published, a heinous error that I put down to my photo being so good that it would completely overshadow the other articles in the said publication - that’s what I’ve been telling myself anyway. Milky Way with the constelation of the eagle (Aquila). The bright star in the middle is Altair, in the head of the eagle. To the right, bearing ENE from Altair, Terazed, and to the left, bearing WSW from Altair, Alshain; the three stars make the head of the eagle.
It is a comissioned work for Jam, a theater actor. The work consisted in make the promotional pictures for Minute, a humor show with the adventures of a… photographer.
It has been a very fun work and it is not the first time I work with the actor Jaume Jové so, it has been a pleasure.

Martedì 19 dicembre, al Mediolanum Forum di Assago a Milano si terrà il Concerto d’Addio di Elio e le Storie Tese. Sul palco: Elio (voce), Faso (basso), Cesareo (chitarra), Christian Meyer (batteria), Jantoman (tastiere), Vittorio Cosma (tastiere), Paola Folli (voce) e Mangoni (artista a sé).
«Sarà mica allora che quello del 19 dicembre 2017 al Mediolanum Forum di Assago non è il Concerto d’Addio degli EelST? Sì, e no – afferma la band - Sì: il concerto di domani è davvero il Concerto d’Addio degli EelST. Sarà una grande festa, quasi tre ore di musica, con una scaletta costruita a partire dalle preferenze espresse dai fan, che hanno votato le canzoni sulla pagina Facebook della band. No: non sarà l’ultimissimo concerto degli EelST».
Elio e le Storie Tese saranno in gara con il brano “Arrivedorci” al 68° Festival di Sanremo, il loro quarto e ultimo festival della canzone italiana. Commentano: «Perché, se si sciolgono veramente, vanno in gara al Festival di Sanremo? Per vari motivi. Intanto perché Claudio Baglioni li ha invitati a presentare una canzone. E se gli EelST gliel’hanno mandata è perché, dopo due piazzamenti al secondo posto (1996; 2013) e una rispettabile ma non abbastanza dodicesima posizione nel 2015, si sono voluti regalare un ultimo tentativo di raggiungere l’obiettivo di sempre: arrivare penultimi al Festival di Sanremo. L’inedita “Arrivedorci” è piaciuta. Il percorso verso il diciannovesimo posto è ufficialmente iniziato».
Dal 20 aprile saranno in tour in tutta Italia con il Tour d’Addio, per raggiungere tutti i fan che non sono riusciti a partecipare al Concerto d’Addio.
Raccontano: «Dopo avere preso atto di quanti avrebbero voluto, ma non hanno potuto, raggiungere Milano per partecipare alla festa al Mediolanum Forum, gli EelST hanno accettato la proposta di organizzare un altro giro di concerti. Un Tour d’Addio, che sarà però “a scadenza”: da consumarsi entro e non oltre il 30 giugno 2018. Con una sorpresa per i fan: il biglietto del concerto del Mediolanum Forum di Assago si potrà riutilizzare per ascoltare gli EelST quando il Tour passerà nella propria città».
