The barge "Fairbanks Provider" under tow by the tug "Ocean Titan" is bound for Whittier, Alaska. She measures 420 ft x 100 ft. The main deck can hold 50 rail cars on rails plus breakbulk freight and containers on the upper deck. This barge plus two sister barges provide regularly scheduled service. Alaska gets a major percentage of it's cargo by tug & Barge.
In addition, CN's AquaTrain service is still active, from Prince Rupert, BC, to Whittier, AK, towed by Foss Maritime. Alaska Railbelt is towed by Western Towboat. Both towing companies are headquartered in Seattle. Here is a very interesting link to both operations, with lots of photos.

After 10 years of service with EarthSTINK, I finally cancelled my account with them. Motherfuckers.
They started off as this kind of "earthy" indie internet provider, and grew into a bloated corporate menace. For the last couple of years, I have HATED having service with them, but was too lazy to do anything about it. One time, I was on the phone with them for THREE HOURS, at the end of which smoke was coming out of my ears and nostrils. I demanded that they give me discounts on my service for all of my troubles, and they did so... in fact I got free service for six months.
In recent years EarthSUCK outsourced all of their customer service to India. I have nothing but empathy for the underpaid workers in India, so this is not a rant about them. But outsourcing SUCKS. It saps jobs at home and egregiously exploits workers overseas.
The poor dude on the line today, when I called to cancel my account. I had to apologize to him several times for my short temper. He would ask me things like, "Please give me a reason for cancelling your account?" And I would say, "Because I just really dislike Earthlink, and I don't want to get into details." And then he would say, "But it would help if you gave more particular feedback." And then I would retort: "Sir, I am sorry you have to be caught up in all this, but I just really fucking hate Earthlink and I don't want to get into it. Please just cancel my account and don't ask me any more questions. I know you are just doing your job but this is one of the MANY reasons I hate Earthlink."
I did not want to cite customer service as one reason for hating Earthlink cuz the poor guy is just doing the job he was hired to do. Of course my incessantly terrible DSL connection is one of the main reasons I hate Earthlink. I don't know how many times I called their ass about that, and they would walk me through the same scripted shit, all to no avail.
Customer service dude also told me that hopefully the account was fully cancelled. I had to laugh sarcastically at this - "hopefully?" I did apologize to him for my sardonic cackle but WTF!
I FUCKING HATE EARTHLINK AND I HOPE THAT THE GREEDY CORPORATE MOTHERFUCKERS AT THE TOP DIE A VIOLENT DEATH.

June 19, 2010 marked the 29th consecutive month of peaceful global protests against the scientology cult. Clearwater went with a second citizen's choice theme. A 22 year citizen of Clearwater came by to talk to us and told the tale of how Clearwater tried to fight the cult in the beginning but then "sold their soul to the devil". The disgusted citizen then threw his arms out wide and said "when you sell your soul to the devil this is what you get!" indicating a downtown largely deserted and with the cult itself owning the vast majority of it.
This month the cult showed it's true criminal nature by having one of their teens who was a plant in the protest group commit theft by stealing a scientology volunteer ministers jacket which had been a gift form an ex-cultist to a Clearwater Anon. The plant asked if he could wear it for one protest march, the owner unwisely said okay. Very quickly in to the march the plant tells me he's going to run and grab his brother (who was always with him at the two other protests they attended) and he'll meet us at the intersection we were enroute to.
I said okay, but leave the jacket. You can put it back on when you return. He said I'll only be a minute. I said no, we don't know you well enough to let you ride off with it on your bike. He says I don't want to take it off so I'll just come with you and call my brother. Then as soon as I turned my back on him to cross the street he sped off on his bike as fast as he could go. A police report was filed for theft of property.
I was very suspicions about those two since the first time they showed up to a protest in March of this year. Their stories simply did not add up. As one example: a teen who says he doesn't go on the internet while feverishly fiddling with a blackberry at every opportunity. As the disgusted Clearwater Police Officer said when I told him of my earlier suspicions "well you were right!"

We still have the cult VM backpack we were given at the same time as the jacket and the cult will be seeing a lot more of that at future protests. We protested an extra hour this day and some of the protestors vowed to protest several days in a row this week as a result of being victimized by this cult's criminal actions.
Since last month's protests scientology and it's abuses have once again made headlines across the world and two Anonymous megaraids have taken place.

"This proposed amendment is no threat to charities or religions acting in the public good," Nick said. "It is simply designed to ensure that people who derive benefit from the Australian taxpayer actually provide benefit to the Australian people through good works."
A similar public benefit test has operated in the UK since 2006, and crucially under the UK model, any identifiable benefit is balanced against any detriment or harm.
"For more than six months we have heard devastating allegations of abuse within the Church of Scientology. We have heard allegations of coerced abortions, false imprisonment, stalking, harassment, extortion, obstruction of justice, and serious labour violations," Nick said. "This test would ensure that these harms would have to be taken into account when deciding whether an organisation receives tax exempt status."

The building in the park (on the left of my photo) is the Birth to 3 Centre. It's part of Pembury House Children's Centre a nursery school in Lansdowne Road, Tottenham.
In December 2013 - shortly after I took this photo - Ofsted (Office for Standards in Education) reported and assessed as "a Good school". (See links to online Ofsted reports below.)
Across the country Children's Centres have been among the casualties of the Coalition Government's public service cuts. So far Haringey has avoided such closures. But given its - in my view - incompetent Tory-leaning leadership, this is only a matter of time.

This is a photograph from the finish of the 4th Annual Multyfarnham (Multy) 5KM Road Race and Fun Run which was held in the village of Multyfarnham about 15KM west of Mullingar, Co. Westmeath, Ireland on Wednesday 3rd June 2015 at 20:00. An incredible and unprecedented crowd of almost 300 participants took to the route including runners, joggers and walkers which was on an out-and-back course on beautiful country roads. The weather was perfect for racing and running. The fast course combined with the good weather conditions provided personal and seasonal bests for many of the participants. The GAA Club and Community Centre provided car-parking and the race headquarters. Overall this was a very well organised race event which on the evidence of tonight's race can grow even further in future years. As this and other photographs in this set shows there is nothing like an evening race in summer time in rural Ireland. Multyfarnham's setting amongst the rolling hills of north county Westmeath and not far from the shores of Lough Derravaragh provides a wonderful race setting. The village of Multy is easily accessible and is just two miles off the N4 Dublin Sligo road.

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

This off-the-beaten-path destiny in the Pacific shore is amazingly beautiful and peaceful, yet adventure is around every corner. Costa Rica in general has very good practices in the ecotourism sector, and this is not the exception. Marine life watching service providers have very strict guidelines on how to manage these encounters –such as distance, maximum number of boats allowed per sighting, swimming is prohibited, among others— so the animals can go on with their natural behaviors. Water endorses such great life forms, and we have to respect every one of them.

The continent of Africa is home to many tropical diseases, which cause illness and, in some instances, death. Tropical diseases wreak havoc on the social and economic growth of the continent and affect the health and welfare of those who travel.
To combat the affects of tropical diseases, and to ensure the health and safety of all Soldiers operating in the U.S. Africa Command operational area, the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences, in coordination with the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, has resurrected the formerly defunct Tropical Medicine Course (TMC) for the 21st century.
The original TMC was taught in 1941 and discontinued in 1991, after 50 years. It was resurrected in 2010 in response to the operational needs of AFRICOM and the Special Operations Command.
Once a six-week long course, it was converted to a targeted short course, and tailored toward non-physician health care providers. The week-long class is now a requirement for all medical professionals deploying to provide health care on the African continent, said Capt. Gabrielle Caldara, environmental science officer with U.S. Army Africa’s Command Surgeon’s Office.
Caldara, Sgt. 1st Class Roddy Rieger, the CSO’s NCOIC, and Staff Sgt. Darren Jones, a medical NCO with USARAF Headquarters Support Company, were the first Army Africa personnel to attend the class Sept. 13-17 at WRAIR in Silver Spring, Md.
The course focused on teaching medical personnel to recognize, diagnosis and treat a range of tropical diseases and ailments that can affect Soldiers who work and travel throughout Africa, said Rieger.
“There were a lot of lectures, seminars and hands on lab practices on things such as leishmaniasis and malaria,” he said. “We learned better ways to recognize symptoms and better ways to treat the problems.”
Among them was the Rapid Diagnostic Test, used to screen patients for malaria. The test uses only a pinprick amount of blood and “is as simple as using a pregnancy test,” Rieger said.
“This particular test allows medical professionals the freedom and convenience to test for the disease without requiring them to transport the patient to a medical facility,” Caldara said.
While Army Africa personnel attending the TMC appreciated the advances in treatment of many tropical diseases, Caldara stressed prevention and education remain key factors in disease prevention.
“This was a great class to understand the intricacies of these diseases, but in the end it all goes back to basics,” she said. “Proper precautions such as uniform treatment, use of DEET/insect repellent, adherence to proper medications and use of a bed net are essential.”

Cemetery: Restlawn

Restlawn is a flat-stone cemetery run under the auspices of Dignity Memorial, the “largest network of honored funeral, cremation and cemetery providers” in the country, with some 1600 affiliates. From their literature it’s not clear how ownership is distributed. Cemetery displays perhaps ten or more treeless acres up the side of a hill bordering Highway 22. If you’re going to be buried there, I’d recommend as far away from the highway as possible. It’s gone under a number of variations on the Restlawn theme, including such things as Restlawn Memory Gardens and Restlawn Memorial Garden, but the new operators appear to have shortened it to the current short form.
While not advertising itself as such, Restlawn should probably be classified as fundamental Christian, as that’s the predominating theme, with religious tableaus and the cemetery divided into religious “gardens,” though ones devoid of plants or flowers. It has one exception to the “no uprights” rule, that of a “freeform” monument to Donald Walters (1969-2003). Donald’s marker is testimony to much more than a young man cut down in his prime, it’s a prime example of a recent phenomenon in the cemetery trade: carrying ones cause to the tomb. For the most part, people in their departure take the opportunity to get right with their god or be remembered by their friends for the good they brought into the world, but now, on the fringes, some people are taking their anger with them to the grave. One expects to see a clenched fist pushing out of the ground.
Or maybe not. Maybe it’s more the living taking advantage of the dead by using their name to further their own agenda. Like historical markers, memorials such as that for Donald say more about those who erect them than the events themselves. I’d bet your bottom dollar that Donald, whose stone lists: “Operation Desert Storm/ Operation Iraqi Freedom - KIA - POW/ 507th Maintenance Co.,” didn’t provide his own epitaph. It wasn’t his idea to make him into a cause celèbre. The back of his headstone contains the long epitaph:
“I would lay down my life for my family and nation if it was worth it, and this one is to let them appreciate the taste of their freedoms. Freedom isn’t free and someone must do what they must do to preserve it. The Bible states, “Blessed is he who lays down his life for the sake of his friends.” I fear not and am motivated by the fear of the unknown and being a part of the bigger picture. Whatever doesn’t kill you will make you stronger.”
Was that passage taken from a letter from Donald? Part of it? Was it a compilation? Who chose? There are many other veterans from many other wars in Restlawn; none of them lists their operations name rather than their war. And none of them gets an upright; only Donald. Donald gets a picture under glass too: hunched down on one knee, dressed in camouflage, but not combat gear. When he returned from his first tour of duty in Kuwait, he was “a changed man,” his father said. “He was super nervous, which is understandable. He saw horrible things.”
Nonetheless, he reenlisted in the Army Reserves and returned to the Middle East for the next war. In Iraq he was a cook, but his parents didn’t know what he did in Kuwait. He was, by all accounts, an accidental soldier. He wasn’t seeking combat, it sought him. He was satisfied with being a cook, but an ambush made him a soldier.
Donald’s tombstone says, somewhat ambiguously, that he was both “killed in action” and was a “prisoner of war.” Reading through the various accounts of what happened, all we really know is that a convoy in which he was riding was attacked and all but a handful of the American soldiers were killed, the rest taken prisoners and subsequently executed. Donald was among those taken prisoner. One can only imagine it would have been best to be killed in the first round.
Would Donald have so freely tossed out the tired clichés: “freedom isn’t free,” and “whatever doesn’t kill you will make you stronger”? How is it that he “fear[s] not,” yet is “motivated by the fear of the unknown and being a part of a bigger picture”? What does it mean to fear “being a part of a bigger picture”?
The modern politicization of death is further emphasized at Restlawn by a handsome plaque “In Memory of all Vietnam Veterans,” a recent addition these many years after the fact. It has an embossed compilation scene of action in Vietnam:
“This memorial was erected in memory of the young individuals who went to war as kids and lost their youthful dreams, and some their lives, for a cause - freedom and honor - and came back as men with the horrors of war instilled in every fiber of their being and were never given the respect and honor they so deeply deserved from the public or the United States government.
“God will one day judge our actions. Until then, He will shine on the lives of each veteran now and forever more because He was with each of them in Vietnam. He is the only One that truly knows what they went through and are living with every day.”
As with Donald’s stone, sad and unfortunate confusion clouds reason and judgment. Surely, God was with the Vietnamese soldiers as much as with the Americans. After all, they won. And whether or not a soldier deserves “respect and honor” depends, I presume, on which end of the barrel you’re visiting.
All of which begs the question of whether or not Vietnam was about “freedom and honor” any more than the Gulf Wars were. Not to mention the question of “where does the love of God go, when the minutes they turn into hours”? One might want to be cautious about welcoming God’s judgment.
