NAVAL AIR STATION NORTH ISLAND, Calif. (Sept. 20, 2023) A C-2A "Greyhound," assigned to the “Providers” of Fleet Logistics Support Squadron (VRC) 30 performs a flyover as part of VRC-30’s final flight. VRC-30 began flying the C-2A "Greyhound" in 1981 and continued to use the aircraft for carrier onboard delivery (COD) to transport passengers, equipment, gear and supplies around the fleet for 42 years. (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Keenan Daniels)

The first C-120 prototype made its maiden flight in late 1949. The first production C-123 was introduced to military service in 1956. The C-123 Provider was an tactical aircraft. Early in its career the aircraft were often used as paratrooper transports. Later, in Vietnam, it flew primarily as an in-theater airlifter. It also worked with the Special Forces designated as AC-123K Gunships that were equipped with 7.62mm mini-guns, flares and night sensors. Others C-123s were employed spraying herbicides. The C-123 was retired from military service in the early 1980s.

The aircraft in the photograph was was delivered to the U. S. Air Force in 1955. It was retired in 1981.

In honor of Father's Day ... to all of the dads out there ... I wanted to highlight one o the many "providers" out there in the natural world.

So here's an image of a mature great horned owl, I believe to be the male of a mated pair, with 2 babies. Like our own dads, they are providers for their young, not only provider food for them to eat and grow up, but also for protection and teaching of skills that will help in the survival of their young. These dads are ever vigilent and help out with the mom as she raises her young as well.

Many say that the great horned owls represent wisdom (right? the "wise old owl"). I know that my own dad was both provider and teacher to me ... and I miss him dearly. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't feel his presence. I'm sure on this day, many of you can relate.

To all of the dads out there, whether it be of a biological nature or a role they willingly accepted along the way ... whether to our own babies or our fur-babies or feathered babies or whatever ... Thanks for all that you do. :-)

Happy Father's Day! Thanks for stopping by to view.

A huge thank you to the National Park Service and all the mutual aid providers who risked their lives to protect life and property during the Springs Fire. Your bravery and hard work is appreciated.

The Santa Monica Mountains Engine 73 Type 3 wildland fire engine has a crew of five including a captain, engineer, and three firefighters.

In addition to initial attack responsibilities, the Type 3 engine responds to other local, regional and national fire incidents. The engine assists other parks in the region with prescribed burn projects and hazardous fuel reduction. It provides other park units with additional staffing during periods of very high fire danger. The engine staff works closely with the fuels management staff on hazardous fuels mitigation projects to create defensible space around park structures.

The park provides fire training to NPS employees outside fire management who are then available to fill in during periods of very high and extreme fire danger. In addition, the SMMNRA brings in resources from other areas to help augment staffing during severe fire conditions.

The protection areas within the SMMNRA boundary consists of federal, state, county, city and private property. With the many homes at risk and the large response area, SMMNRA works with numerous other state, county and local government fire agencies through cooperative fire agreements to suppress these wildfires. Ventura County Fire, Los Angeles County Fire and Los Angeles City Fire are our closest suppression resources.

In a prior post in this series I shared a photo of the Whittier Provider being pulled off the slip to begin its trip north to Whittier. Here is their sister vessel, the Fairbanks Provider, which had been holding out in Elliot Bay awaiting her turn to be brought into position to have the railcars stripped off her deck.

Three barges owned and operated by Alaska Marine Lines (a member of the Lynden family of companies) are constantly cycling between Seattle and Whittier, AK carrying up to 40 railcars on 8 tracks with 32 rows of containers stacked two or three high in the racks above. The rails are flush with the deck so that high reach fork lifts equipped with twist locks can drive on and off the barge before rail cars are loaded to pick or stack the containers. To add to the fascination AML owns flat decks they they lash anything and everything to and then stack on top of the containers. I've seen graders, excavators, campers, fire trucks, boats, and even prefabricated outhouses! Oh, and if that wasn't enough the upper level is also wired for 480V power so refrigerated containers can be plugged in to be kept cool in summer and warm in the sub zero winter months. There truly is nothing else like it!

This particular barge is the Fairbanks Provider built by Gunderson in 2001, and it is 420 ft long and 100 ft wide with 3190 linear feet of track on the deck and a dead weight of 15,300 tons! Movement of the barges is contracted to Western Towboat and out of sight but ready to move her into position is harbor tug, Westrac. The 63.4 ft long vessel was built in house by Western Towboat in 1987 and is powered by two, Caterpillar 3512 diesel engines for a total rated 2,500 horsepower.

Unlike in Whittier the containers are not handled in the same location as the railcars so a barge arriving from Alaska will stop here first to unload railcars then be moved to AML's yard down on the Duwamish waterway to be unloaded and reloaded. Northbound the process will reverse and the barge will stop here to load railcars before beginning their thousand mile 7 day trip up the Inside Passage and across the Gulf of Alaska.

The M/T Skaw Provider is an oil/chemical tanker that has a gross tonnage of 2889 tonnes and was built in 2005 at the Selah Shipyard.

The vessel sails under the flag of Malta with the Port of Registry as Valletta. With a Call sign of 9HA3641 this Combined chemical/oil tanker has a double hull. The vessel has a length of 95.82 m a breadth (beam) of 14.20 m and a capacity of 4,719 m3

In the background is the The Port of Southampton which is a passenger and cargo port in the central part of the south coast of England. The modern era in the history of the Port of Southampton began when the first dock was inaugurated in 1843. The port has been owned and operated by Associated British Ports since 1982, and is the busiest cruise terminal and second largest container port in the UK.

The port is ten miles (16 km) inland, between the confluence of the rivers Test, (on the left) Itchen (on the right) and the head of the mile-wide drowned valley known as Southampton Water. The mouth of the inlet is protected from the effects of foul weather by the mass of the Isle of Wight, which gives the port a sheltered location. Additional advantages include a densely populated hinterland and close proximity to London, and excellent rail and road links to the rest of Britain which bypass the congestion of London.

The average tidal range is approximately 5 feet (1.5 metres), with 17 hours per day of rising water thanks to the port's "double tides". These allow the largest container and cruise ships access to the port for up to 80 per cent of the time, according to the container terminal operator DP World Southampton. The effect is a result of tidal flow through the English Channel: high tide at one end of the Channel (Dover) occurs at the same time as low tide at the other end (Land's End). Points near the centre have one high water as the tidal swell goes from left to right, another as it then goes from right to left. Neither is as high as the one at each end.

The principal berths are divided into three areas, The Old Dock at the junction of the Rivers Test and Itchen consisting of berths 20–49; The New Dock, known as the Western Dock, built by the Southern Railway consisting of Berths 101–110; and the Container Terminal consisting of berths 200–207. The last two are constructed on reclaimed land.

For the 2010 model year, Ford introduced the SVT Raptor model of the F-150. Intended for dedicated off-road use, the Raptor has a number of modifications to improve its off-road ability. It includes a full set of FOX shocks with 11.2" of front suspension travel and 12.1" of rear travel. It wears a wider body and fenders than the standard F-Series truck. In a departure from the F-150, the Raptor wears no blue-oval Ford emblem on its grille (for the first time since 1982); instead, the grille has "F-O-R-D" spelled out in the center. In 2011, a full four-door SuperCrew model was added to the standard 2+2 door SuperCab model.

The Raptor is powered by a 411 hp 6.2 L V8 (shared with the Ford Super Duty); it is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

A huge thank you to the Mountains Recreation and Conservation authority and all the mutual aid providers who risked their lives to protect life and property during the Springs Fire. Your bravery and hard work is appreciated.

The Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority (MRCA) is a local government public entity established in 1985 pursuant to the Joint Powers Act. The MRCA is a local partnership between the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, which is a state agency established by the Legislature, and the Conejo Recreation and Park District and the Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District both of which are local park agencies established by the vote of the people in those communities.

The MRCA is dedicated to the preservation and management of local open space and parkland, watershed lands, trails, and wildlife habitat. The MRCA manages and provides ranger services for almost 69,000 acres of public lands and parks that it owns and that are owned by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy or other agencies and provides comprehensive education and interpretation programs for the public. The MRCA works in cooperation with the Conservancy and other local government partners to acquire parkland, participate in vital planning processes, and complete major park improvement projects.
