Technically called close-combat marksmanship, it’s a technique special forces have practiced for years to effectively react to and engage an enemy – hence the name “reflexive fire,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Wayne LaClair, of Camp Casey, located in Area 1 of South Korea. LaClair served as the observer-controller in charge of range events during the competition.
“It teaches you to instinctively ID your target, aim and shoot in what we call ‘controlled pairs’ [two shots] to down the target,” he explained. “It teaches muscle memory, just like athletes. It also cuts down on civilian casualties because they have to identify the target before raising their weapon.”
It’s an important skill for Soldiers, he added, and as far as the Best Warrior Competition, a difficult event because competitors can lose points for neglecting details like not properly charging their weapon. He encouraged the competitors to build the muscle memory and practice the skill as they develop as Soldiers.

Army Reserve and Navy Reserve medical personnel have a group huddle at the end of the day during Operation Razorback, Wynne, Ark. These huddles are known as AAR, or after action review. It helps servicememebers identify both, the positive and negative issues throughout the day. The goal is to find solutions and implement them the following day ultimately providing the community with a better service.

Lt. Benjamin Murray removes objects from an eye using a slit lamp during the Simulation Training for Operational Medicine Providers (STOMP) program at the Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command (NMRTC) Portsmouth Healthcare Simulation and Bioskills Training Center, April 10 and 11, 2023. Forty prospective general medical officers (GMOs) completed the course to prepare them for independent operational practice through exercises in orthopedics, general surgery, podiatry, ophthalmology and more.
The Simulation center developed the STOMP Program in 2015 to strengthen the knowledge and skills of graduating GMOs. The program involves the ability to learn, practice and demonstrate patient care skills that will be necessary to function as an independent practitioner in an operational environment.
The simulation center provides state of the art simulation based medical training for the United States Armed Forces, as well as supporting the local medical community. Since the center’s inception in February 2006, it has trained more than 36,000 DoD and civilian health care professionals and expanded its capabilities utilizing over 50 different medical simulators. From the basic IV training arm simulators to the latest in three dimensional virtual simulations, NMCP’s health care simulation center has remained on the cutting edge of medical modeling and simulation. Governor Kathy Hochul today honored eight Emergency Medical Services Providers who died while serving and protecting New Yorkers. The Governor also issued two proclamations to recognize May 21 - May 27 as Emergency Medical Services Week and May 24 as Emergency Medical Services for Children Day. The ceremony to honor the fallen EMS providers took place at the Empire State Plaza in Albany, in observance of EMS Week.
"Today we recognize the ultimate sacrifice made by eight of New York's brave uniformed public servants," Governor Hochul said.
