These guards are on one of the entrance of the Presidential residence in Rome, Italy. Look at the fact that there are three guards with different uniforms: I can't really recognize them, perhaps they are police, carabinieri and... I really don't know.

To my eyes this reflects in some way the administration complexity in Italy. The president is not directly elected, and he is not the leader of the government, however he is an important institutional figure. Politics in Italy are really messy, especially these days...

Men's waistcoats changed in style across the Georgian period, starting off long with no collar, and becoming shorter and shorter until they finished just above the level of the waist, frequently with turn over collars. This mid-length example is from the 1730s, the same decade that Bath entrepreneur and philanthropist Ralph Allen (1693-1794) donated funds and stone from his quarries on Combe Down to found the Mineral Water Hospital in the centre of the city.

The Bath Assembly Rooms, built 1769-71, designed by John Wood, the Younger (1728-82).

Opened by subscription on 30 September 1771 to serve the fast-expanding upper town, this 'large and noble block' (Pevsner) became the heart of polite Bath society: see the description in Dickens's 'The Pickwick Papers' (1836). One of the most magnificent of all Georgian civic buildings, it entered use as a lecture and concert hall (in which Liszt performed) in the 19th century before becoming a cinema and market in the 20th. The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB), through the munificence of Ernest Cook, bought the building in 1931. It was lavishly restored under the eye of Mowbray Green, the Bath architect, and re-opened in October 1938. Severe bomb damage in April 1942 affected the interior, and the ballroom in particular, leaving the building a gutted shell: this was Bath's most severe architectural casualty of the war. A second full restoration was undertaken in the early 1960s under the direction of Sir Albert Richardson, assisted by E.A.S. Houfe; Oliver Messel advised on the decorative schemes. The Assembly Rooms were re-opened in May 1963. The complex now includes the Museum of Costume, housed in the basement (work undertaken in 1978-79).

A notable Palladian public entertainment building, showing the adaptation of the Woods' domestic architectural vocabulary for public use on a scale of Roman magnificence. It is also a triumph of restoration.

In humanitarian situations across the world, children are likely to make up half or more of the population affected by conflicts or disasters. On October 29, 2012, the Child Protection Working Group (CPWG) launched a long-awaited set of interagency Minimum Standards for Child Protection in Humanitarian Action developed as common guidelines for the global humanitarian community. U.S. Ambassador Betty E. King and Swiss Ambassador Alexandre Fasel co-hosted the launch of the standards on behalf of the CPWG. Dr. Neil Boothby, Special Coordinator for Children in Adversity for USAID, gave remarks recognizing these standards as a milestone in the protection of children affected by conflict and disaster around the globe. Visit cpwg.net/minimum-standards/ for more information about this initiative and the full text of the standards.

The main objective of the Social Cash Transfer (SCT) Programme is to reduce extreme poverty and the intergenerational transfer of poverty. The SCT Programme has been operating in Zambia since 2003 and is implemented by the Ministry of Community Development, Mother and Child Health (MCDMCH). Several positive impacts among beneficiary households include reduced poverty, increased food security, improved child wellbeing, improved living conditions and greater productivity and asset ownership.

In antiquity, the fame of Samothrace emanated from its mystery cult of the Megaloi Theoi, the Great Gods, whose rites of initiation promised protection at sea and the opportunity to “become a better and more pious person in all ways” (Diodorus). The Sanctuary itself has the unmistakable aura of sacred ground. Within its sacred space events occurred that shaped both the mythic and historical ancient world. The island’s legendary family sired the Trojan race; here, the parents of Alexander the Great first met and the last Macedonian king held out against the Romans. The nature of the rites of initiation was held in silent trust by the community of initiated.

As in the Mysteria of Eleusis, first-time participants in the Samothracian Mysteries were called mystai (μύσται, derived from the verb μύω, “to close the eyes”) and second-time participants were called epoptai (?πόπται, from the future tense ?πόψομαι of the verb ?φοράω “oversee, observe, look upon, behold”). A kind of preliminary myesis (initiation) presumably took place at the Theatral Circle (25). After undergoing this preliminary rite, the initiates, blindfolded, wandered through the darkness in search of the goddess Harmonia, the daughter of Zeus and Electra, whom, according to the Samothracian legend, Kadmos had carried, presumably by sea, when, in the course of his quest for Europa, he sailed by Samothrace. Harmonia was saved and brought back to Samothrace by her brothers, Dardanus and Iasion/Eetion, figures closely associated with the mysteries and with (the well-known role of the Great Gods) saving people in peril at sea. The happy outcome of the search for Harmonia, taking the form of her epiphany and of a sacred marriage, the wedding of Kadmos and Harmonia, was represented in the rite of Samothrace, enacted within the great Hall of Choral Dancers (17) and reflected in the frieze which surrounded the building.
